Hoteles / Hotel Review: Maldron Smithfield Dublin

¡Hola!

Hi!
As customary in this blog, after our holiday, it's time for some travel-related posts here, so we'll be dedicating some time to tell you about the hotel we've stayed at, the city, the places to visit there or where to go shopping. We did the same thing already for Berlin, Tallinn and Amsterdam and so it's only fair we do the same thing with the latest European capital we've been to, Dublin.

We usually choose a flight+hotel combo from our trusted travel agents', as it gives us a lot more freedom of choice than the usual tour operator or travel catalogues with their closed package holidays. We are therefore given a printed list of both different flight and accomodation options out of which we then go through, choosing both the flight and hotel we like best for a number of reasons.

Flightwise, we eventually decided to fly with Aer Lingus, the former flag carrier of Ireland instead of using budget airline Ryanair. We think budget airlines were a good idea years ago, before they started charging you for even breathing so to speak and everything now operates on a you-pay-you-get basis with them. Both incoming and return flights were on time, needless to say with no complimentary catering service onboard, but in a word, we wouldn't mind flying with them again given the chance.

We had to pay a 30 EUR surcharge per person and checked piece of luggage when we booked the flight, though.

Our hotel during our stay was the Maldron Smithfield, one of the many Maldron hotels in Dublin.

The Maldron Smithfield hotel is a modern and roomy hotel. It has a restaurant and breakfast service, none of which we used, being our booking Accomodation Only. It offers WiFi access only in the ground floor (Reception) that can be used free of charge any time and works fine.
It is only two minutes away on foot from the 'Smithfield' LUAS tramway stop on the Red Line, which provides frequent and reliable transportation to and from Dublin city centre. We'd strongly advise purchasing the prepaid Leapcard and topping it up as needed. You needn't go far to get it, as Leapcards are sold for instance at Fresh, the excellent supermarket located right next door to the hotel.

Check-in at the hotel was fast and smooth and we were promptly given the keys to the room that would be our home for the next five days, Room 505. The keycard is responsible for the room's electricity supply -which in general I'm not to keen on- , but in this case it's not that bad as with two, you can take one with you and leave the other one in the room so as to be able to charge your mobile or batteries. As you can see in the pics, rooms are equipped with two beds, a double and a single one. Both are super comfortable and the pillows were better than average, though Marian brought her own as usual. The room also has a small coffee table and two small armchairs we used everyday to eat whatever we bought at different supermarkets for breakfast and dinner everyday.
Bathroom was nice too, though the glass partition in the tub did not do much to prevent the water from spilling onto the bathroom floor.
The old-style TV set gets the Spanish National channel TVE (so us Spaniards don't get homesick) as well as many Irish and British stations -no American or German stations though. A minibar (empty) would have definitely been a welcome addition in a hotel of this category. Clean-up of the room was just average - a dry leaf on the carpet kept us company throughout our 5-day stay.

I hope these posts, different from the usual ones at this blog are also interesting enough for you. In the next few days, we'll be talking about the things you can do in Dublin, the places to go shopping and so on.
