Libros / Books: Keary Taylor: 'What I didn't say'

Here I am again with another book review for the blog, in this case to present you my latest read in English. As far as I know, no translation into Spanish is available yet.

From what I could gather, this American writer is best known for several YA fantastic fiction novels. Well, the book I'm reviewing today is the only one that does not belong to any of them and is actually a stand-alone novel.
It's a pity she hasn't written more like this, as I thought *this* was a good book altogether, even if the spelling was at times, erm, dreadful.

The English saying 'If life gives you lemons, make lemonade' could very well be applied to the struggles the characters in the book go through.

 Excerpt:

Getting drunk homecoming night your senior year is never a good idea, but Jake Hayes never expected it all to end with a car crash and a t-post embedded in his throat.

His biggest regret about it all? What he never said to Samantha Shay. He's been in love with her for years and never had the guts to tell her. Now it's too late. Because after that night, Jake will never be able to talk again.

When Jake returns to his small island home, population 5,000, he'll have to learn how to deal with being mute. He also finds that his family isn't limited to his six brothers and sisters, that sometimes an entire island is watching out for you.
And when he gets the chance to spend more time with Samantha, she'll help him learn that not being able to talk isn't the worst thing that could ever happen to you. Maybe, if she'll let him, Jake will finally tell her what he didn't say before, even if he can't actually say it.

As I mentioned above, I thought this was a good book overall. The author managed to profile the characters well enough to sympathise with them, understand their reactions and so on. She succeeded in getting herself in the head of a teenage guy and sound believable, which is not always easy for a female author.
I very much enjoyed the way Jake's family comes together to be there for him, as well as the relationship he has with his younger sister Jordan, but also how getting closer to Kai makes him realize his own preconceived ideas about him were merely that.

The book ends with an afterword from the author, sharing her reasons for writing the novel.
This was a quick read, I think I finished this up in two-three days and, leaving the spelling mistakes I mentioned earlier aside, I can totally recommend it.

Besos
