Productos terminados #61 - 'Finito' products #61.

Hola, chicas:

4. Aceite desmaquillante "Asian Sensations" de Belle (Marian).
Me encanta.

Hi girls,

Here we are again to show you our latest 'empties'.
1 - 'Body Fantasies Signature' in the scent 'Pink Sweet Pea Fantasy' Body Spray (marox): I bought this at the neighbourhood supermarket, Alimerka, which keeps this inside the Essence counter. There was a total of 6 or 7 scents and from all the ones I tested this was the one I liked best. It has a soft flowery scent that was really nice. We both liked it very much, since Marian tried this too.
I believe this is a steal in the US, since they sell these at the Dollar Tree. I think she paid about 3 euros for this.

2 -  Invisibobble hair bands (Marox): She's used these a lot, as it doesn't leave marks on your hair. The pack contained three of these, so she still has another two left.
She bought this for €3.90 from Fapex Beautyspin (now Notino *US / UK*) and also got some cashback from the leading Spanish cashback sites.

3 -Essence 'I love Extreme' mascara (Marian): I really liked this volumizing mascara, as it doesn't clump my lashes. I'd repurchase in a heartbeat.

4 - Belle 'Asian Sensations' makeup remover oil (Marian):
I love it. I'm using another bottle from the same brand now, but when I use that up too I will no longer be able to repurchase, as this was the name brand of a local supermarket no longer available, neither here nor in our hometown Zamora, which was where I bought these from.
But I do have a DIY recipe for this that I'll share with you as soon as I test it.

5 - 'Happy Buddha' Shower Foam by Rituals (Marox):
It was a magazine freebie. She now only buys magazines if they include something nice to try and this was indeed the case. I have used this myself too and we both loved the fruity scent.
Don't you love freebies like this with magazines? The downside is that all the nice gifts are not always available nationwide.

Well, that was all for the time being. Hope you enjoyed this Empties post.
Happy New Year. See you in 2018.

Hi again!

Today it's time for a book review, so here's some info on my latest read. The thing is during the summer I have no excuse not to read a little bit more often, unlike now.

English-speaking readers will find this novel under the title 'Haunting Jasmine'.

A call from the past brings divorcee Jasmine Mistry home to Shelter Island to run her beloved aunt's bookstore, which has always been rumored to be haunted. With that knowledge, Jasmine embarks on a mystical journey, urged along by her quirky family, and guided by the highly emotional spirits of long-dead authors. Surprisingly, she finds herself moved to heal her broken heart when she falls unexpectedly in love with an enigmatic young stranger.

Haunting Jasmine is a shortish novel (even more so on my EReader) that belongs to the magical realism genre, for which Isabel Allende is most recognized for.

Jasmine's aunt Ruma needs to go to India to mend her heart and needs someone special to care for her beloved bookshop in her absence. Jasmine takes a hiatus from work in San Francisco to cover for her and go back to her hometown, an isolated island where she barely has reception. The bookshop is a quirky place with people coming and going as if they were in their own home, shelves full of dusty books and eccentric who barely have a clue which book they're looking for.
With the help of Tony, her aunt's bookshop assistant she tries to find her spot in this strange environment while trying to mend her aching heart, courtesy of her cheating, womanizer ex-husband.

In short, this is an uncomplicated short novel, a quick read that will hopefully leave a pleasant aftertaste.

Compras en Vitacost y IHerb- Vitacost and IHerb Haul.

Hola, chicas:

Marox me dejó probarla y me encantó.

Hi girls,

We ordered some stuff from Vitacost and IHerb a few weeks ago. So read on to see what we bought.

1 - Desert Essence Soft Curls Hair Creme (Marian): Marox let me use this and I loved it. Besides, you know how much I love coconut-scented products (unlike Marox who merely tolerates them), so I took the chance to order one for myself.
I like how my hair feels after using it: soft, shiny but without the sticky feeling.

2 - Jasön tootpaste: We ordered one for each. We enjoyed it in the past and decided to repurchase.

3 - Bee propolis capsules from Vitacost. Again, we ordered two bottles. It's good to have them to fight the cold weather, especially here in Burgos. Otherwise, you'll have a cold now and again.

4 - Grapefruit Seed Extract (Marian): I'll use this in my homemade cosmetics recipes. It is used as a preservative.

5 - Bamboo Shampoo (Marox):  Available from Vitacost. This strengthening shampoo had good reviews, as it helps fight hair loss and is gentle on the hair and scalp. It lathers nicely and hair feels stronger and shiny.

Guía de viaje de Barcelona / Barcelona Travel Guide (Part III)

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

After quite a long time, here we are with the third part of our own Barcelona travel guide.
At this rate, it will blend into next summer's holidays.

Day 5.

Our day began with a visit to the Aquarium. Marian was in her element taking photos as if there was no tomorrow. Highlights of the visit were walking along the glass tunnel with all the fish around you. You have sharks swimming past your head!

We also took the bait and bought the tourist photo as a souvenir. We turned out fine, so why say no.

We had lunch at the Aquarium restaurant and then headed to the marina for the Las Golondrinas pleasure boat trip.
This time the experience was somewhat different. So far, all the tourist boats we've been on were on rivers or lakes. But this time, it was the sea. And even though this was the Mediterranean, the waters were rough that day.
It took us a while to get used to the movement of the ship, but after that, we enjoyed the views.
It was cloudy that day, and we didn't know if it would rain afterwards. Besides, it was a bit windy, so we stayed in the covered part of the boat.
But there were some brave people who decided to go upstairs.
We also bought the tourist photo here.

The cruise lasted about one hour and a half.
Then we took a walk along the marina, visiting a street market. There were many antiques.

Day 6.

We started our day taking the tourist bus from Sants station.
We had to walk around the station to get to the stop. It was a bit tricky.
But it was worth it, because this ride was included in our tourist card. Without it, the all-day ticket would be about €29.
It includes an audioguide in several languages.

We stopped at the station nearest the Sagrada Familia, which is what we visited next.
We could say that we dedicated this day to see Antoni Gaudí's work. Well, just a small part, anyway.

This visit wasn't included with the Barcelona Pass. We had bought the ticket online a few days earlier, at the beginning of our stay. You can choose the time you will be visiting it.

We were really shocked with the visit. Marox had seen it before, but just outside, not the inside.
As you will probably know, it's still unfinished. Lack of budget? Lack of a brave architect?
It won't disappoint you, anyway.
We took lots of photos here.

Then we had lunch at a restaurant in front of it.

Next, we took the tourist bus again to get to Güell Park, and we got off at the nearest stop.

However, we had to walk for quite a long time, and we walked uphill for longer than we expected.
And when we finally got there, all the tickets were sold out. Noooo!!!! So DO book your tickets in advance.
But since there's quite a big area of the park you can visit for free, that was what we did.
We liked it very much.
There were people selling souvenirs and cold drinks too.

It was very hot, so after visiting the park, we stopped at a café, and we had a cold milkshake.

Day 7.

Time to go back home.
We checked out from the hotel to Sants station in time.
Yes, the station is in front of the hotel, but as it's always full of people and we had to pass the safety controls...
In such a big city as Barcelona, a bus and train station has as much traffic as an airport.
In other words, we had to be patient.

Once in the train, the journey took us 6 hours.
This train did have plugs under seats, which is great. It also had a restaurant, perfect to grab a bite.

The only con was the air conditioning. It was so cold that Marian got a cold.

Well, this is the end of our very own Barcelona travel guide.
We hope you like it.

Productos terminados #60 - 'Finito' products #60.

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

Here we are again to make a review of the stuff we've used up recently.

1. Face cream from Abuelita Ceiba (Marian).
It's not completely finished really, as you can see in the pic, but it had gone bad (it smelled rancid), so I threw it away.
It contained 106 ml, which I think it's too much for a face cream, considering the fact that it's made with natural products, so its expiry date is shorter than others you can buy.
I won't be repurchasing it for that reason.
Despite that fact, it's the best face cream I've ever tried.

2. Marine algae enzyme peeling from Ziaja (Marian).
This is completely finished.
It's so creamy that I'm not sure the peeling effect is that noticeable.
However, after rinsing with water, my skin felt a bit greasy at the beginning.
I didn't care for it much.

3. Automatic eye pencil from Flormar, in black (Marian).
Needless to say, it has been a very good replacement for my beloved automatic eye pencil from P2.
It's very creamy and its pigmentation is great. It's perfect for the waterline.
I could buy it again in the future, though now I'm using one from another brand, which I  also like very much.

4. Coconut body scrub, from The Body Shop (Marian).
The exfoliation it provides is not as effective as others I've tried.
What I did notice when using it was a warming effect on my skin. Will it be maybe due to any of the ingredients?
I don't like it much, really. The truth is none of us have been terribly impressed by TBS body scrubs.

5. Fructis Hair mask from Garnier (Marox).
Marian has also tried it and she likes it. These products take some time to use up as a little goes a long way. It leaves hair soft and shiny.

Well, this is all by now.
See you in another post.

Hoteles / Hotels: Expo Hotel Barcelona

Hola, chicas:

Hi ladies,

As usual after one of our travels, now is the time to tell you about our accommodation away in Barcelona.

Just like last year, we made the reservation through Booking but instead of using Beruby, we got there through Topcashback, as it had a much better cashback deal.

The Expo Hotel is located outside Sants station, which was great considering it was the station we arrived at after our 6-hour train ride. There's another hotel right in front of it, a taller building that is hard to miss. The Expo hotel is right behind it.

At reception we handed in our reservation, gave our details and presented the credit card the booking was pre-paid with. No problems whatsoever. The receptionist gave us the choice of having a room in the upper or lower floors and we decided in favour of an upper-level room, in case there was noise from the traffic below. No worries there, as we couldn't hear anything. The upside of a room in the upper floors was we got better views. See the sights in the pictures? We could see part of the old bullfighting ring now turned Shopping Mall - Arenas and Montjuic in the distance.

As you can see in the pics, our room, 815 was really spacious, with nice modern décor.
Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that the maids were really quiet, unlike in other hotels where you're woken up by slamming doors and vaccuums on full blast.
It had a decent closet with an in-built safe, a desk, tea-making facilities and a minibar we were unable to open as it had a key.

Anyway, we couldn't really find any supermarkets in Barcelona. They were all small, independent corner shops, mostly run by Chinese families. Don't get me wrong, but I don't really trust those places to respect such things as cold chain and best by dates are respected in such places.

Our booking included breakfast, served on the 3rd floor, which was also the hotel's restaurant.
The hotel also boasts a rooftop pool and solarium we could enjoy during our stay, as we mentioned in part One of this travel guide series.

Well, this was our own review about the Expo Hotel Barcelona, where we stayed during our trip to Barcelona.
We hope you find it useful.
See you around.

Guía de viaje de Barcelona / Barcelona Travel Guide (Part II)

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

Time to continue our virtual tour of Barcelona, if you're interested.  You'll find part 1 in *this* link.

Day 3.

Although we had meant to validate our tourist passes that day, Marian woke up feeling really under the weather that morning.
The day before she'd been carrying lots of stuff all day long: her purse, her DSLR camera bag ... and it all took its toll on her.
Luckily, she was feeling better by midday, though we'd already decided to have a quiet day all the same.

We had lunch at the restaurant in the hotel and then went for a stroll around the area, visiting a small park nearby. After that we went to Sants Station and spent a few hours just walking into the stores there and, yes, we did buy a few things.

When we booked our hotel, we already knew it had a rooftop swimming pool so we'd packed a couple of bikinis in case we had time to check it out.
As we'd settled for a quiet day already, there'd be no better chance to try the pool than this. It was a bit late and windy, so we just sunbathed and read a book in the solarium.

Day 4.

After breakfast, we took the underground and got off at Diagonal to see one the buildings in Barcelona Antoni Gaudí infused with his trademark style, Casa Milá which is also known as *La Pedrera*. This art nouveau construction is so unique that in 1984 was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List, for its exceptional universal value.

Our visit to La Pedrera meant we had to activate our Barcelona Pass tourist card, as this attraction was included on the Pass and tickets are not exactly cheap.

This building was a commission from the Milà family, who wanted a family residence that at the same time provided apartments to rent.
The visit takes a few hours but it's a must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona.

Our next attraction for the morning was Casa Battló, and we went there on foot.
Gaudí's commission this time was different, as he had to transform a dull building into the nature-inspired colourful wonder that it is today.

We had our photo taken on one of the balconies and though at 12 euros it wasn't exactly cheap, we turned out nice (and I'm so NOT photogenic!) and we got it. The nice thing was that you're given a code so you can also download the photo over a period of time.

We had lunch right after we were done seeing Casa Batlló right next door. Casa Amattler is another striking modernist building that houses a small café serving lunch menus on the ground floor.

With a full stomach, we were ready to continue our sightseeing day and got the underground to visit Poble Espanyol. This complex reproduces the architecture found throughout Spain and is home to a community of artists selling their creations within the complex. Yes, the kind of place made for tourists. Families with kids would enjoy the place too. We took the chance to get some gifts for the family there.
When you leave the station, bear in mind you'll still have a 15-minute uphill walk ahead of you. Not exactly great in mid-July with a scorching heat. No wonder it was an even bigger struggle.

With our sightseeing day coming to an end, we headed to the Arenas Shopping Mall to see the Montjuic Magic Fountain lights show, as advised by our good friend Didac. After the show was over, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at one of the rooftop restaurants.
Marian had a great time altogether, and really enjoyed herself taking photos of the changing lights on the fountain.
It was a good time for night photography (you already know that she loves photography).

This was the end of our fourth day in Barcelona.
We hope you enjoyed the second part of our very own Barcelona travel guide.
See you soon.
