Libros / Books: Remember me like this

¡Hola amigas!

A primera vista, parece encontrarse bien.

Hi buddies!

It was time to have a book review in the blog. The truth is I started this novel a few months ago but it's taken me a long time to finish it. Why? The usual: lack of time and will. And I'm not saying this novel wasn't worth it.
Bret Anthony Johnston directed the creative writing program at Harvard University and has received several literary awards for his work (both for this novel and the collection of short stories 'Corpus Christ').Here's the editor's summary for the novel I'm reviewing today:

Four years have passed since Justin Campbell's disappearance, a tragedy that rocked the small town of Southport, Texas. Did he run away? Was he kidnapped? Did he drown in the bay? As the Campbells search for answers, they struggle to hold what's left of their family together. Then, one afternoon, the impossible happens. The police call to report that Justin has been found only miles away, in the neighboring town, and, most important, he appears to be fine. Though the reunion is a miracle, Justin's homecoming exposes the deep rifts that have diminished his family, the wounds they all carry that may never fully heal. Trying to return to normal, his parents do their best to ease Justin back into his old life. But as thick summer heat takes hold, violent storms churn in the Gulf and in the Campbells' hearts. When a reversal of fortune lays bare the family's greatest fears--and offers perhaps the only hope for recovery--each of them must fight to keep the ties that bind them from permanently tearing apart.

Like I said earlier, it's taken me longer than usual to finish this book. I found myself reaching for it only when I knew it would help to kill time at the doctor's waiting room. And I don't go to the doctor that often, thankfully.

One thing I missed in this novel is some more delving into the characters, specially Justin. We only know how he feels through brief exchanges with his parents or third parties and that would have improved the story a great deal.

As for his parents, they tried to fill their lives with just anything that would help them forget his son's absence during this ordeal.
The characters I enjoyed the most were Griff's and the grandad who are both the glue that keeps this wrecked family together during their darkest moments.

I recently began another novel, a family saga that this time I'm reading in Spanish. Hopefully reading that one will not take as long as did one did.
