UDLS / NOTW: Día de la madre / Mother's Day

En España, celebramos el día de la madre -a diferencia de otros países- el primer domingo de mayo, que este año es el día 6. En la última manicura/estampación que subí, con el esmalte Multidimension de Essence como base y el Poison Me, Poison You de Catrice para estampar, os comenté que a mi madre le había gustado tanto que me pidió que le hiciera algo parecido a ella también.
Me ha parecido que no había un día más apropiado para enseñaros aquella manicura que el día de la madre.






In Spain, Mother's Day -unlike other countries- is celebrated the first Sunday of May, which is May 6th this year. In the last mani / stamping I shared with you, using an Essence Multidimension lacquer as a base colour and Poison Me, Poison You from Catrice for stamping, I let slip my mum had liked it so much she had asked me to create something similar for her.
I thought there was no better day to share that mani than Mother's Day.






En el caso de mi madre, la combinación que usé fue dos capas del esmalte 'Sara' de Douglas y, si mal no recuerdo, también el Poison Me, Poison You de Catrice para estampar. Como tiene 0 paciencia para esperar quietecita a que se le seque el esmalte, apliqué una capa finita de SV antes de estampar y otra finita también después de estampar. Quedó muy contenta y le duró un montón, sospecho que por llevar las uñas más cortas. Lo digo porque evidentemente cocinó, limpió y pintó en ese tiempo. No acostumbra a pintarse las uñas, pero el óleo no se le resiste.

As for my mother's mani, the combo I used was two coats of Douglas lacquer in the shade 'Sara' and if I'm not mistaken, again Poison Me, Poison You from Catrice for stamping. Given her patience waiting for a nail polish to dry doing nothing is close to nil, I applied a very thin coat of SV before stamping and another thin coat right after that. She was very happy with the end result and the wear too. I guess her shorter nails explain the latter. I.e. she cooked, cleaned up and painted in the meantime. She doesn't usually paint her nails, but the 'oil on canvas' thing is definitely within her comfort zone.

No se os olvide felicitar a vuestras madres en una fecha tan señalada. ¡Espero que a nosotras tampoco se nos pase!

Espectáculo "Bombay Bellywood" de las BDSS - 'Bombay Bellywood' show with the BDSS

Como ya os comentamos, para celebrar el cumpleaños de marox el pasado mes de abril fuimos a ver un par de espectáculos, uno de flamenco y éste de danza oriental, en concreto la compañía de las Bellydance Superstars de Miles Copeland.
No voy a entrar en si son las mejores bailarinas del mundo, que digamos que es un tema más bien publicitario, pero desde luego sí que la compañía tiene grandísimas bailarinas y el Sr. Copeland ha montado un gran espectáculo, acercando la danza oriental al gran público, tipo Riverdance con el baile tradicional irlandés.
Lo cierto es que fue toda una sorpresa descubrir que iban a representar su último espectáculo en esta ciudad, ya que en otras ocasiones que han visitado España, tan sólo han actuado en lugares como Madrid y Barcelona. La ventaja que tenemos en ciudades más pequeñas es que en ocasiones podemos disfrutar del mismo espectáculo, por mucho menos dinero. No sé qué precio tendrán las entradas en otras ciudades para este espectáculo, pero a título informativo os diremos que pagamos 20€ por cada entrada.

As we'd already mentioned, we attended a few shows to celebrate marox's recent birthday, first a flamenco show and then the following day this Oriental Dance show, starring the Bellydance Superstars dance company, from Miles Copeland.
I won't go into discussing the term Superstars, as that is usually a marketing thing. They do have excellent dancers and have certainly made Oriental Dance entertaining for the masses. Think Riverdance and traditional Irish stepdance.
The truth is we were shocked to discover they'd be performing their latest production in this city, as with other tours they only visited places like Madrid or Barcelona. The upside we have in smaller places is that sometimes we get to enjoy the same shows for a fraction of the price. I don't know about other venues for this show, but we only paid 20 EUR for each ticket.

Marox estuvo yendo a clases de danza oriental durante varios años y en las clases, muchas veces se usaba música de los montajes de las BDSS. También tenemos un montón de videos instructivos y hemos visto otros espectáculos en DVD, pero nunca nos imaginamos que algún día podríamos disfrutar de uno en directo.
Con los años, ha habido cambios en el elenco original de la compañía, en la que ya no están Jillina como directora artística ni grandes figuras de su elenco como Amar Gamal, Ansuya o... Rachel Brice, máximo exponente del estilo fusión tribal o American Tribal Style. Aunque digamos que nos resulta más atractivo el estilo clásico egipcio o turco que suele venir a la cabeza al oir la palabra 'bellydance', el control abdominal que tienen las bailarinas de tribal es sinceramente impresionante. Marox took bellydance lessons for several years and in class instructors usually dance to music created for the BDSS shows. We also have several -well, that's an understatement- instructional DVDs and have watched many of their previous shows on DVD, but we actually never dreamt of seeing one of them live.
During the years, there have been many changes to the original dance troupe, where Jillina is no longer artistic director nor they have other well-known dancers in the company body like Amar Gamal, Ansuya or... Rachel Brice, probably (excuse the understatement) the most famous and accomplished tribal or ATS bellydancer in history.
Even though we find classic Egyptian or Turkish styles more visually appealing, they are also the styles one thinks about when hearing the word oriental / bellydance, the truth is that muscle control and isolations tribal bellydancers exhibit is nothing but outstanding. Como no estaba permitido hacer fotos ni video del espectáculo, Marox compró el DVD oficial de este espectáculo, grabado en Los Angeles, antes del comienzo de la actuación. A decir verdad, sí que hice una docena de fotos y un par de minivideos, pero justo cuando ya se estaban despidiendo, porque me apetecía tener un pequeño recuerdo de la actuación que presenciamos. Como podéis ver, salieron bastante bien, pero claro, estábamos en tercera fila. Eso sí, si lo hacéis por vuestra cuenta y riesgo, no uséis flash bajo ningún concepto y haced como yo y sacadlas justo al final, para evitar problemas. Me olía que los *medios locales* /*2* no se iban a hacer demasiado eco del tema, viendo la poca publicidad que hubo del espectáculo. Para mí que se pensaron que eran unas mindundis cualquiera. ¡Ay, Señor!





As photos or videos were forbidden, Marox bought the official DVD for this show, recorded in Los Angeles, right before the show began. The truth is she did take a dozen of photos and a couple of video snippets, but I did so when they were saying their goodbyes to the audience. They turned out quite nice as you can see, but hey, we were sitting in the third row! I really wanted to have some tiny tangible memory of the show we went to. If you want to do the same at your own risk, I'd suggest you do like I did and wait until the very end of the performance and do not use the flashlight on no account to avoid getting into trouble. I sensed the *local media* *2* would not have good coverage of the event, given the little publicity the show had got prior to it. My take: they probably thought the BDSS were some group of wannabe dancers. Oh, Lord!!




A pesar de que ya no estén las integrantes originales de la compañía, a lo largo de los años se han ido incorporando nuevas bailarinas, que al fin y al cabo, no deja de ser la manera de mantener la chispa y sorprender al público. En la representación a la que asistimos, tan sólo conocíamos a un puñado de bailarinas como Petite Jamilla -que digamos llevó el peso de la actuación, con varios solos, entre ellos, uno al principio con Issam al darbuka, quien ya tenía al público en el bote sólo con hablar en español. La vi muy sólida -digamos que ha crecido como bailarina- y disfruté como una loca su tradicional número con doble velo, que se convirtió en velos múltiples al tiempo que hacía un giro derviche tras otro. Literalmente, no pude evitar levantarme del asiento. Aunque marea sólo de verlo, fue simplemente espectacular y lleno de colorido. Me gustó mucho más que el del DVD de París.




Despite the fact that some of the original dancers are no longer in the company, new dancers have joined the troupe, which in the end is a great way to keep the sparkle and surprise the audience. The handful of dancers we knew on the show we attended included Petite Jamila -who more of less carried the weight of the performance with several solos including an early drum solo with Issam, whom btw had the audience already in his pocket by simply addressing us in Spanish. She seemed very solid on stage -let's say she's grown as a dancer, and I tremendously enjoyed her trademark double veil number, which became a multiple veil one with dervish spin after spin. I literally couldn't help but jump from my seat. Dizzying as it is by just watching it, it was simply spectacular and very colourful. I liked this waay better than the one she does on the Paris DVD show.




Entre las otras bailarinas que conocíamos estaban las tribaleras Moria Chapell y Kami Liddle, que han tomado el testigo de la inigualable Rachel Brice. Con Sabrina Fox y April Rose? no estábamos tan familiarizadas, aunque debo decir que nos gustó mucho más el solo de Sabrina que el de Moria -quizá por la música, aunque la de tribal es un poco estridente para nuestro gusto. Yo diría que la música de influencia hindú de Moria no le permitió lucirse tanto.

Among the other dancers we were familiar with were tribal dancers Moria Chapell and Kami Liddle, who succeed the unequalled Rachel Brice. We were not so much acquainted with Sabrina Fox and April Rose?, though I must say we liked Sabrina's solo more than Moria's -perhaps because of the music, though ATS music in general is too strident for our liking. I'd say Moria's Bollywood music didn't allow her to show off her talent quite as much.




Una nueva y acertadísima incorporación a las BDSS ha sido Sabah, con una presencia en el escenario y una alegría que se contagiaban. Tiene un graaaan shimmy, -como su predecesora en las Bellydance Superstars, Amar Gamal. Sin intentar compararlas, se puede decir sin temor a equivocarnos que es una excelente sustituta.

A new addition to the BDSS and a wise choice at that was Sabah. Her stage presence and sunny personality really got to the audience. She has a greeaat shimmy, just like her forerunner in the Bellydance Superstars Amar Gamal. I'm not trying to compare them, only state what an excellent replacement she's been imo.




Meera se ocupó de la parte más Bollywood / Bhangra del espectáculo. Nos llamó mucho la atención lo pequeñita que era. No pudimos evitar fijarnos menos en ella que en el resto del grupo en uno de los números, por la coreografía tan alegre y singular -especialmente de brazos que hacían. Daban ganas de saltar al escenario y ponerse a bailar. Colorido y música se sucedían sin parar, sin dejar tiempo ni a pestañear.

Meera was behind the bulk of the Bollywood and Bollywood / Bhangra-inspired numbers in the show. We were surprised by how tiny she was and couldn't help paying more attention to the rest of the dancers during one of the numbers. Their cheerfulness and peculiar armwork combinations made us really want to jump onstage to join them. Colourful costumes and lively music followed nonstop. There wasn't time to blink!

Nada más terminar la actuación, asomamos la cabeza por los camerinos -es lo que tiene haber actuado en ese teatro, jeje- , a ver si con suerte pillábamos a alguien y sí, hubo suerte. Nos gustaría tener un pequeño recuerdo para Lauren, bailarina y percusionista de las Bellydance Superstars, que accedió muy amablemente a posar para una foto rapidita y charlar un poco con nosotras mientras ultimaba su maleta. Esa foto, nos la reservamos para nuestro álbum personal.




Right after the show, we sticked out our heads backstage -the perks of having briefly performed there, haha- in the hope of getting a glimpse of some of the stars and yes, we did. We'll have a fond memory of Lauren, dancer and percussionist for the Bellydance Superstars, who kindly agreed to pose for a quick pic and some chitchat while she finished her packing. We'll keep that picture for our private album.

Y ayer por la noche, casi una semana después de la visita de las BDSS, marox fue a una gala benéfica con grupos de danza locales y profesores de danza, en la que hubo desde ritmos africanos, a baile tahitiano (Aparima y Otea), oriental de nuevo y como no, flamenco. Marian no pudo ir, ya que trabajaba de noche y ahora mismo está durmiendo.

And last night, almost a week after the BDSS visit, marox went to a charity gala featuring local dance groups and local instructors, with a little bit of everything ranging from African drum solos and African dance to Tahitian dance (Aparima and Otea), Middle Eastern dance again and of course, flamenco. Unfortunately, Marian couldn't come as she was working a night shift and is sleeping as I'm writing this.

Libros / Books: '3096 días' de Natascha Kampusch

Hoy vengo a hablaros del último libro que he leído, en esta ocasión en español. No suelo leer biografías, de hecho creo que sólo había leído *otra* hasta ahora.

I'm back with another book review, this time featuring my latest read in Spanish. I don't usually read biographies, actually I think I'd only read *another* one until this.

Como mucha gente, escuché el nombre de Natascha Kampusch por primera vez a finales de agosto de 2006, cuando todos los telediarios y prensa escrita se hacían eco de la autoliberación de esta joven austríaca que había pasado prácticamente ocho años de su vida encerrada en un zulo tras su secuestro.

Like most people, I first heard the name Natascha Kampusch late in August 2006, when every single TV station and written press told the story of how she managed to escape after spending the last eight years of her life almost permanently kept in a secret cellar following her kidnapping.

Pocos días después concedía su primera entrevista a la cadena austríaca ORF *parte 1 / parte 2 / parte 3*, en la que pudimos observar a una joven relativamente serena y muy inteligente relatando su secuestro a manos de Wolfgang Priklopil, un antiguo trabajador de la multinacional Siemens. Era el 2 de marzo de 1998 y Natascha, de 10 años, iba sola al colegio por primera vez, cuando fue introducida por la fuerza en una furgoneta blanca, que la llevaría hasta una casa de Strasshof, a las afueras de Viena. Allí pasaría los siguientes ocho años con la única compañía de su secuestrador.

A few days later she gave her first interview to the Austrian TV channel ORF *Spiegel article*, where we could finally meet a relatively calm and very smart teenager, recounting her kidnapping eight years earlier by Wolfgang Priklopil, a former employee of Siemens. On March 2nd, 1998 Natascha was walking alone to school for the first time, when she was abducted and taken to the back of a white van that would take her to his home in Strasshof, near Vienna. She would spend the next eight years there with the only company of her abductor.

Al igual que aquella entrevista, en su libro '3096 días' -los días que duró su cautiverio- Natascha vuelve a demostrar su inteligencia tejiendo con maestría un relato en el que analiza con precisión quirúrgica tanto su propia infancia como la hija pequeña tardía de una pareja en crisis como su secuestro, la personalidad de su captor, los errores de la investigación, sus reacciones y las reacciones de la gente y los medios tras su liberación.

Like on that interview, in her book '3096 days' -the days her abduction spanned- Natascha proves what a smart young lady she is, wisely recounting her story and disecting with surgical accuracy different events and facts, such as her own childhood as the late smallest child of a doomed couple, her abductor's personality, the flaws in the investigation of her case, her reactions and the reactions of people and the media after she ran away.

Natascha no sólo nos habla de las muchas humillaciones y abusos que sufrió a manos de su carcelero, que pasó de comprarle dulces al principio de su encierro a racionarle la comida casi provocándole la muerte, que le proporcionaba libros para educarse al tiempo que le lavaba el cerebro para convertirla en su esclava de por vida. La joven se niega a verse a sí misma como una víctima y rechaza el encasillamiento en la etiqueta de 'síndrome de Estocolmo'.
Pienso que resulta demasiado fácil adjudicar las conclusiones a las que ha llegado tras su calvario a esa mera definición médica. Quizá si Natascha se hubiera mostrado ante los medios como una jovencita de escasa cultura a raíz de su cautiverio, no se la habría cuestionado tanto. Se llegó a decir que se lo había inventado, que ocultaba datos sobre posibles cómplices y se la desacreditó por su sorprendente capacidad de empatizar con su secuestrador y torturador, que era a la vez su único contacto con el mundo exterior y quien por desgracia tenía la llave de su vida o su muerte.

Natascha does not only provide a diary of the humiliation and abuse she suffered. Her kidnapper went from getting her sweets at the beginning of her ordeal to literally starving her almost to death. At the same time, he fed her mind by bringing her books to educate herself while in the cellar. On the other hand, he also brainwashed her in order to make of her a lifelong slave to him. She refuses to regard herself as a victim and doesn't like to be branded as suffering from 'Stockholm syndrome'.
It is perhaps too easy to fall into that, complex as they are the conclusions she's reached after her ordeal. Had Natascha appeared before the media as an illiterate naïve teenager following her abduction, she might not have been questioned as she has. Accusations were flung at her, claiming she was making the entire ordeal up, that she was concealing details about potential accesories to the kidnapping and was discredited for her unexpected ability to empathize with her captor and abuser, who was at the same time her only connection with the outside world and the person who unfortunately had her life or death in his hands.

A día de hoy, Natascha lucha por recobrar la normalidad y colabora con varias causas benéficas, principalmente para combatir el maltrato a la mujer, pero no reniega de la fama, ya que ha llegado incluso a presentar su propio programa de televisión.

As of today, Natascha is still fighting to lead a normal life and helps different charities, mainly fighting abuse against women but does not turn her back against fame, having even hosted her own television show.

UDLS / NOTW: Essence Multidimension ''12 Found my Love' + Catrice '110 Poison Me, Poison You!'

¡Hola!

Hoy le toca el turno a un post de uñas, que sé que gustan. Me temo que las fotos no son nada del otro jueves, ya que no tuve tiempo de que Marian me hiciera ninguna.

Today it's time for a mani post, which I know you enjoy. I'm afraid the pics are nothing out of the ordinary, as I had no time to ask Marian to take some.

Día 1: Por la mañana, aplico el tratamiento para las cutículas de Mavala. Después, una capa del Nail Envy como base y una vez seco, una capa generosa del esmalte de Essence. Para no dejar la estampación para luego (un luego que al final se queda en nada), tengo preparado el kit de estampación. Una vez seco, estampo con el morado de Catrice, que funciona de lujo, en todas las uñas con uno de los diseños de la placa de imitación de Konad que compré en Buyincoins. En el meñique de la mano izquierda se me mueve un poco y en el pulgar derecho me cuesta centrar el diseño y dejo un hueco, así que llamo a la caballería -Marian- para que me ayude con el resto de la mano. Limpio las manchas de esmalte de la piel de los dedos con un bastoncillo empapado en alcohol y aplico una capita de Seche Vite para proteger el diseño y acelerar el secado.

Day 1: In the morning, I apply the cuticle treatment from Mavala. Then, one coat of Nail Envy as base and once dry, a generous coat of this Essence lacquer. Fully intending to not leave stamping for later -a later that inevitably most times end up in nothing- I have my stamping kit at the ready. When dry, I used this excellent purple Catrice polish for stamping, which works flawlessly, in all nails with one of the images in the fake Konad plate that I got from BIC. The stamper moved a bit when I did my left pinky turning a bit blurry and I have some trouble aligning the design onto my right thumb, so I asked Marian for help and no more glitches with the rest of the hand once the cavalry arrived. I did some clean up around the cuticles with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol and apply a coat of Seche Vite to protect the designs and speed drying time up.

Día 4: El día anterior, tuve un desconchón en el dedo corazón de la mano derecha y otros más pequeños en otras uñas, así que me lo retiro por la mañana antes de lavarme el pelo. Recuerdo que la otra vez que usé el FML también se me saltó el esmalte relativamente pronto.

Eso sí, la estampación fue un éxito, ya que mucha gente me preguntaba que cómo me lo había hecho, que si eran pegatinas. A mi madre le gustó tanto, que me pidió que le hiciera algo parecido.

Day 4: The day before the polish on my right middle nail got chipped and other nails had some minor chipping too, so I took it off in the morning before I washed my hair. I remember that the first time I used FML it came off relatively early too.

The stamping though was a success, so much that many people asked me how I did it, if it were stickers and so on. My mother liked it so much that she asked me to do her nails with something similar.

I'm here with my nails of the week. This time I've borrowed from marox one of the polishes I gave her for her birthday. It's 'Love 'em, leave 'em', from Color Club, with a holo finish, but despite that fact, very wearable due to its base shade, quite difficult to describe, by the way. Any ideas?

Para esta manicura apliqué una capa de la base de GOSH para esmaltes holográficos. Después, dos capas finas de este esmalte para una mejor cobertura, y como siempre, Seche Vite para terminar.
La manicura me ha durado menos de lo habitual (3 días). No sé si será por aquello de que los esmaltes holográficos duran muy poco puestos. Normalmente las manicuras se me echan a perder cuando me lavo el pelo (cosa que ocurre dos veces por semana), pero esta vez no ha dado ni tiempo.

For this mani I applied one coat of the base coat for holo polishes from GOSH. After that, two thin coats of this polish for a better coverage, and as usual, Seche Vite on top.

This mani has lasted less than usual (3 days). I don't know if this has been so due to the shorter lasting of the holo polishes in general. My manis usually get ruined when I wash my hair (this happens twice a week), but this time it happened before that.


Antes los esmaltes holográficos me parecían demasiado cantosos, pero ahora... ¡me encantan!


I used to think that holo polishes were too in-your-face not such a long time ago, but now... I love them!

Compras en Mercadona - Latest Mercadona purchases

El día 26, cumpleaños de marox, teníamos que comprar algo de avituallamiento y terminamos nuestra mañana de compras en Mercadona. Marox tenía ganas de echar un vistazo a las últimas novedades de Deliplus, que ya se estaban empezando a ver en algunos blogs y foros, así que eso hicimos.

On the 26th, that is, marox's birthday, we had some grocery shopping to do and ended our morning outing at Mercadona. Marox wanted to take a look at the latest releases from their beauty house-brand Deliplus, which had slowly featured on some blogs and forums, so there we headed.

Ya pudisteis ver en este post varias de las novedades de los supermercados Mercadona para el día de la madre, *aquí*, así que ahora solo nos queda enseñaros lo que compramos.

We already wrote about the different beauty products Mercadona launched to celebrate Mother's Day *here*, so now it's time to share with you what we got.

En primer lugar, picamos con uno de los kits de productos capilares al aceite de argán, jojoba y keratina de la linea Stylius. Como veís, se compone de un champú, una mascarilla en formato tubo y un sérum. Cuando lo usemos, ya os iremos contando qué nos parece. Precio: 7,95€.

In the first place, we succumbed to the hair care kits with argan and jojoba oil and keratin from the Deliplus Stylius range. As you can see in the pics, it contains a shampoo, a hair mask in a tube and a serum with a pump dispenser. We'll let you know how we like these when we use them. Price was 7.90 EUR.

En segundo lugar, nos compramos un kit corporal de frutos rojos, con gel de ducha y crema corporal. Aunque los productos no son muy grandes, agradecemos que Deliplus haya sacado otra crema corporal en formato tarro. En la linea fija, sólo está la de aceite de argán y la de aceite de oliva. Como véis en la foto, el kit costó 3,15€.

In the second place, we got one of the body care kits, the one with red berries that contains a small shower gel and a body creme/butter. We feel this is a welcome addition to the Deliplus family and if it's any good, we hope it's here to stay. The only body cremes in a jar at Mercadona are the Argan oil and the Olive oil ones. As seen in the picture, price was 3.15 EUR.

Marian se trajo uno de los últimos jumbos que han sacado. Como sabéis, le gustan mucho y es de lo que mejor le funciona en sus párpados extragrasos. Ahora valen 3€.

Marian got one of their latest jumbo eye pencils to add to her now quite big collection. As you know, she's very fond of them as they work quite well on her extremely oily lids. Price is now €3.

Y aunque renegamos del formato -donde esté un tarro aprovechable hasta el final, que se quite todo lo demás, finalmente hemos sucumbido al embrujo de sus famosas leches corporales de la linea Monogotas, en concreto las de vainilla y la de mora. Si no me equivoco, son de edición limitada, pero en nuestro Mercadona aún quedaban. Marox no permitió que Marian se acercara a la de coco. Coco... ¡puaj! Cuestan 1,65 € cada una.

And despite disliking the format so much, we finally caved in and bought a couple of their popular Monogotas body milks, the vanilla and the blackberry ones. The reason why we don't like these tubes is that a jar can be used up to the very end, by just dipping your fingers directly onto the product. In theory, these are limited edition items but our nearest store still stocked them. Marox did not allow Marian to get any close to the coconut-scented one. Coconut... Yuk!! Price is 1.65 EUR each.

Anoche disfrutamos un montón del espectáculo de flamenco "Tr3s" de la bailaora Belén Maya. Llegamos a casa a las 4:00 de la mañana y nos encontramos con un OPI: Objeto Peludo Identificado, esperándonos. ¡Si es que es como una madre! No es la primera vez que se queda levantada esperando a que lleguemos.
En un rato iremos a ver a las Bellydance Superstars. Os dejo con una foto de otra de las ocurrencias de Molly.




Last night we really enjoyed the 'Tr3s' flamenco performance by Belén Maya. We came home at 4 am and found an IFO: Identified Furry Object waiting up for us. She's like a mum, isn't she cute?? It's not the first time she does that.
We'll leave for the Bellydance Superstars in a while. Here's a pic of one of Molly's latest crazy ideas.
