O no.

Pues NO.

It's been ages since I wrote a news-related post, but this time I couldn't keep quiet.

As of today, we have almost 6,000 people in Spain infected by the much-feared virus that has killed thousands worldwide. For some patients, it may be like the common flu or not even show symptoms but if you happen to have the misfortune of really being hit by it, you're screwed.

In times like this, I feel ashamed of being Spanish. People lacking the common sense or civility many of my fellow Spaniards are demonstrating.
People from Madrid hoarding food from supermarkets in small towns on their 'leisurely trip' to the beaches in the south or east, to the Levant or Galicia in the north. Like it was an extended holiday. But after all, this bug will only kill old folks, won't it? Or not.

In case you don't know, my sister is a nurse. She works at the city's hospital -though her ward is not a high-risk one yet-. But guess what will happen if / when those in the line of fire such as ER and ICU staff get the disease? She and her colleagues will have to go there to take turns to help out.
The province where we live in is the one with the most cases in the region.

Do you think she and her colleagues have those fancy masks, the ones that seem to provide better protection against the virus? NOPE. They have paper ones and they're rationed. She's using only one every day and I've told her to reuse the ones from previous days to provide more protective layers or use them when she has to leave home to get groceries or go to work.

As for myself, I'm stuck away from my family at the shared flat with 2 of my housemates right now. I'm rationing my food in case things get tough or I showed symptoms.

Until Monday, when despite classes having been cancelled, we still don't know whether the education authorities will give us permission to work from home and not have to go to our workplace to do exactly that.
Yes, it's as absurd as it sounds.

And healthcare staff are not the only ones at risk. I pity supermarket workers from, for instance, Mercadona. We know a couple and they're exhausted, on the verge of physically collapsing with the sole protection of some vinyl gloves. I know they'll be given a bonus for their efforts, but... Is it really worth risking someone else's life so that your spoiled kids can have their cartload of pizzas and soda??
One cashier shouted out the following: This bug won't probably kill you, but diabetes and cholesterol will, you fool!
My heart goes out as well to petrol stations staff or truck drivers, etc or anyone who will have to work no matter what.

Equally reckless are those on holiday on the coast. Gangs of Britons whose only worry right now is downing another shot of vodka. Shame on you!!

No mention of polititians, who didn't cancel political gatherings or the Women's Day demonstrations. How many of those you recklessly had contact with will be lucky enough to survive? Paella parties were organized for seniors, etc. No comments.

Sadly mankind only learns the lesson when bodies start piling up...

Stay at home as much as you possibly can, for Christ's sake!

Compras varias acumuladas en Vitacost y iHerb / Sundry Vitacost and iHerb Haul

¡Hola!

3 - Pedido a Iherb.

5 - Pedido a iHerb.

6 - Pedido a Iherb.

Hi!

I don't think I've ever written a Haul post with so many different orders. Other posts took precedence, it took me a while to compile all the pics, there were a few unplanned orders... Anyway, I'm a crappy blogger, I know. Have mercy on me, will you?

1- Vitacost Haul: Ordered placed and sent on March 13th. Got it on the 29th. I ordered a body butter from Alba Botanica, containing kukui nut that I haven't tested yet but smells divine. I also included a Mint Julep Queen Helene deodorant and two packets of Vitacost-brand coconut sugar. It doesn't leave a residue, unlike the first brand we tried.

2- Vitacost Haul: Order was placed on May 24th. As you can see, I ordered the famous Acure Organics face mask, a tube of sunscreen from Babyganics, a bottle of jojoba oil from Desert Essence, some Desert Essence lip balms, another Queen Helene deodorant from the Tea Tree range. I also ordered some Vitacost Tea Tree oil and Evening Primrose Oil, recommended to me by my gynecologist -same dosage, but much cheaper.

3 - iHerb Haul. Order placed and sent on August 25th and received on... August 30th. I ordered two deodorants: Desert Essence's chamomile and calendula and Queen Helene's Mint Julep. Since they stock Elf products, I ordered a black gel eyeliner that is usually out of stock. It comes with a small slant brush. The liner works really well and is great value for money.
From the Trials section, I got a travel-sized tube of body wash that I may use as a face cleanser.

4 - Vitacost Haul. Order was placed on August 25th as well and I got it... on August 30th. Talk about fast. I ordered the famous Desert Essence coconut curl styling creme that Bliur swears by. I ordered the Giovanni chocolate scrub for Marian's birthday, plus some Evening Primrose Oil for me and more coconut sugar for my mum, this time from the brand *Wholesome Sweeteners*, which was one of the brands on sale.
They had a 50% off deal when ordering Vitacost-brand products, so I got two bottles of Evening Primrose Oil.
And now it's time for some rant: The Spanish post service Correos put the 'sorry you were out' note on the building's publicity mailbox. One of my neighbours saw it and put it in mine, but if I'd gone to the post office 30 minutes later than I did, I wouldn't have got my parcel, as it was already labelled and ready to be sent back to sender.

5 - iHerb Haul: Order was placed on September 29th and received October 10th. My mum asked me to get her some essential oils for her *ultrasonic oil diffuser*. I.e. jasmine, lavender and citronella, all from Now Foods. I also got her some 'Sugarless Sugar' from the Trials section, as it was only .50 cents.
Our pick from these oils is hands down the jasmine one. The device we're using them on is from Amazon. It was one of their Black Friday deals recently, and my mum asked me to get her another one for their other house in Burgos. Which in turn led to my placing yet another order from iHerb.

6 -  iHerb Haul: Order placed on November 24th and was received December 15th.This time I ordered two bottles of Cococare's Eucalyptus Oil, 1 bottle of jasmine and 1 of citronella from Now Foods and another of Cococare's lavender oil.

Well, at long last, those were my latest iHerb and Vitacost orders.
Bet you'd never seen such a belated post. Have you tried any of the above mentioned products? Do give us your two cents about them in the comments section down below.

Cabreada y estafada: Aliexpress / Really pissed off - Rant: Aliexpress scam

Today I have quite a different sort of blogpost for you. It's not the usual beauty-related stuff or book review.
Please allow me to vent my feelings and rant about something that's kept me busy for a while now.

A few months ago we wrote *this* blogpost, showing off our brand new smartphones. It was time for us to leave the 'mobile prehistory' behind and get a smartphone and accordingly bought the ZTE V970 to ALIEXPRESS seller ANTION STORE. Both my sister and myself received our devices 11-12 days after our order was dispatched and despite some problems setting up our 3G connection, everything went smoothly.

Back in August, we decided it would be a great idea to get my father's Christmas present earlier than planned and buy him a smartphone as well. That way he could really make the most of the flat-rate data plan he had just signed up for.
Since the seller did not have our models anymore, we agreed on getting him a newer model, the Lenovo A820. Being as we were very pleased with the service on our first big online purchase, we placed our order through the same seller. HUGE MISTAKE.

I placed my order on August 18th and the seller took about 5 days to process the order. I was given a tracking number in the transaction page that claimed that the package had been 'Admitted / Accepted' on August 25th. The phone had apparently left China and was supposed to be in transit.

There were a few days left to our Paris trip and started to worry when we saw that we had not received the phone (we got the case and battery from the other sellers in about 12 days). We knew shipping may sometimes take longer: some of my Buyincoins orders have taken 12 days while others needed a month.
The seller kindly insisted that I had to wait. Upon returning from Paris (and to Burgos, where the parcel was shipped to), I was really annoyed by then and decided to go to my Post Office to see if they could get more info about the package.
The only info provided by the tracking number as of today is that it was 'Admitted' on August 25th. I was also told that if the parcel was held at Customs, I would have received a letter from them by then and this would be reflected in the tracking details as well.

The seller extended the delivery time so as to delay the payment of the funds and tells me to wait until October 23rd.
On that day, I contact him again: if he refuses to give me a full refund, I will have to open a dispute.
What a coincidence!! As if by magic, he claims that on that very same day 'some parcels were returned to him' for no reason and will check whether mine was amongst them or not. (If they were, that would appear on the tracking info, wouldn't it?. Very politely insists on me being 'patient' and assures me that they will 'accept full responsibility'.
After spending quite some time surfing the CONFUSING Aliexpress WEBSITE, I open a dispute.
This morning, I checked my email account via my smartphone and read an automated message from Aliexpress informing me that the seller has accepted the dispute and that I will get a refund in 7-10 days.
Relieved, I put Plan B into practice and agree with Marian on ordering the same phone off Ebay, praying that this time the transaction goes smoothly.
Well, to my surprise, the seller still asks me to 'be patient' and assures me that they will 'accept full responsibility', while he complains about the slow shipping and how he has no control over that but adds that he CANNOT issue a refund now, because he has to check the location of my order and claim it to the Chinese Post Office. What has he been waiting for all this time then?

Really pissed, I contacted Aliexpress, sending proof of the transaction and correspondence and to my surprise a few minutes ago get another automated message telling me the seller has REFUSED THE DISPUTE and my demands and inform me that he has offered a counteroffer, which I am TOTALLY UNABLE TO FIND in the messy Aliexpress disputes page.

I just contacted my bank manager, because my last hope towards GETTING our MONEY BACK (Marian's and mine) is that they block the funds themselves. I know that with this sort of things, everyone speaks from experience and that many stores and sellers get negative feedback, sometimes rightfully and sometimes not so much.

Despite a previous positive shopping experience at the site (and from the same seller) I cannot help but take back my praise of both and STRONGLY ADVISE you AGAINST buying anything from ALIEXPRESS.

Updated to add latest screencaptures]

The buyer will always have the losing hand with them, the user-unfriendly layout of the disputes pages gives me zero confidence and much to my regret, I fear that I'll have to bid farewell to our $138.50. Mr. Benjamin Fan must think money rains down on me and that I should behave as if I were the reincarnation of Saint Job.
You always think such things will never happen to you, until they do.

I would really appreciate your feedback in this blogpost. Have you ever had to open a dispute on Aliexpress or Ebay? Did you get your money back? How long did they take to give you a full refund? What other options do I have to get my money back?

I'll keep you posted on how this eventually turns out.
My latest step has been to leave a negative feedback, telling my awful shopping experience as a returning customer at Antion Store. I don't see it uploaded it yet, so I'd rather leave my testimony here in the blog, just in case it never shows on Aliexpress.

** Updated 11/6/2013: I was finally refunded by Aliexpress, though unfortunately lost over €6 in the process, presumably it was partly due to the difference in the currency exchange rates between the payment date of August 18th and the refund date.
The $138.50 I was entitled to was reduced to 133.50 USD (shipping costs??) and that converted into EUR 96.52. Not a full refund, but I least I got most of it back.
If you ever find yourselves in this situation, I strongly advise you to take action by all means available to you (through e-mails with Aliexpress and comments in their forums, through your bank and your credit card company, etc).
Keep all the communications between yourself, Aliexpress and the seller, because your bank will ask for as many supporting evidence as you can provide. I must have printed at least 30 pages.

Let me add a brief thanks to my bank, Caja Laboral (and my manager, Silvia), for the efficient way they handled this. As usual, their customer service gets top marks.
I forgive them for mistakenly writing all my Internet purchases as in pound sterling.

NO COMPRES, ADOPTA - DON'T BUY. ADOPT.

Caption: I'M NOT A TOY.

Yesterday morning, Subflava reproduced in her *blog* the following letter from an employee at a dog shelter in Spain. I felt it was only just fair if we did the same here, adding an English translation at the same time -feel free to correct anything in the English version, btw. I got a feeling the situation it reports happens in other countries too, at a smaller or greater degree. With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, many families decide to incorporate a furry member to their home.

Though I plan to write a post about the latest news one of these days, I felt this was far more important and urgent.

*********************

CARTA DE UN TRABAJADOR DE LA PERRERA:

LETTER FROM A DOG POUND WORKER.

First of all, all of you animal breeders/sellers, should work at least ONE DAY at a dog pound.

Then maybe if you saw the sad, lost look, confused eyes of these animals you'd change your mind about breeding and then selling them to people you don't even know.

This puppy you've just sold will probably end its days at my dog pound when it's no longer a cute little puppy.

Entonces...

Well... how would you feel if you knew that his chances of never leaving the pound if he ends up there are 90%? No matter if it's pedigree or not.

50% of the dogs at my shelter, abandoned or stray, are pedigree.

The excuses I hear the most are:

-'We've moved and cannot take our dog/cat with us'. - Really? Where is it that you're moving into that you're not allowed to have pets and why did you choose that place instead of another one where you could?

-'The dog is now bigger than we thought'. - And how big did you think a German sheperd would grow to be?

-'I have no time for her'. - Really? I work 10 or 12 hours a day and even so I do have time for my 6 dogs.

-'It's wrecking out our courtyard'. - And why don't you have it inside, with you?

They always tell me: 'We don't want to push you into finding it a home, because we know he'll be adopted, he's a good dog'.

The sad thing is that your pet will NOT be adopted and... do you know how stressing a dog pound is?. Well, let me tell you:

Your pet will have 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop her at the animal shelter.

Sometimes, a bit longer if the shelter is not full and your pet makes it and stays completely healthy.

If it gets a cold, it'll die.

Your pet will be confined to a small cage, surrounded by the barking and cries of another 25 animals.

It will have to manage for itself to eat and sleep.

Will be depressed and will cry constantly for the family who's abandoned him.

If it's lucky and I have enough volunteers, they may be able to walk him occassionally.

Otherwise, your pet will get no attention, apart from some food on a platter slipped through from the door of the cage and the water splashed from a hose.

If your dog is big, black or from any 'bull' breed (pitbull, mastiff, etc) you've taken him to death from the moment it walked through the door. These dogs are seldom adopted.

Regardless of how 'sweet' or 'tame' your pet is. If your dog is not adopted in the 72 hours after her entrance and if the shelter's full, it will be put to sleep.

If the shelter's not full and the dog is well-behaved and from an attractive breed, we may be able to delay their execution, but not for long.

Most dogs are put in protection cages and are put down if they show signs of aggressiveness.

Even the tamest of dogs can change in such an environment.

If your pet contracts the 'shelter's cough' (infectious tracheobrochitis in dogs) or any other breathing infection it will be put down at once, simply because shelters cannot afford paying a treatment of 150 EUR.

And now here's something for those of you who've never witnessed how a perfectly healthy animal is put to sleep:

First of all, he/she will be taken out of the cage with a lead.

Dogs always think they're going for a walk, and leave the cage contentedly, wagging their tail... until they get to 'the room'. That's when all of them get to a full stop.

They must smell or sense death or feel the sad souls that stopped breathing there.

It's strange, but it happens to every single one of them.

Your dog or cat will be held tight by 1 or 2 vet assistants, depending on the size and how nervous they are.

Next, a specialist in euthanasia or a vet will start the procedure: they will find a vein in its front legs and will then inject a 'pink substance'.

Let us hope your pet does not panic when it feels imprisoned and unable to move. I've seen some animals ripping off the needles and ending up covered in their own blood, deafened by the howling and crying.

Not all of them 'sleep' straight away. Sometimes they suffer spasms for a while, suffocate and defecate on themselves.

When it's over, your pet's body will be piled like a log, in a large freezer at the back, with the rest of animals waiting to be collected like rubbish.

¿Qué sucede después? ¿Será incinerado? ¿Lo llevan al vertedero? ¿Lo convertirán en comida para mascotas? Nunca lo sabrás y probablemente nunca te lo plantearás.

Solo era un animal y siempre puedes comprar otro, ¿no?

What happens next? Will it be cremated? Or taken to the rubbish tip? Or made into pet food? You'll never know and will probably never even think about it.

It was just a pet and after all, you can always buy another one, can you?

I hope that if you've made it this far, you eyes are filled with tears and cannot shake off the images that fill my mind every day when I get home from work.

I really hate my job, I hate that it exists and I hate to know it always will unless you, people, change and realise that it's not only the poor life you're leaving at the pound being affected, but many more.

Between 9 and 11 million pets die everyday in animal shelters and only you can put an end to it.

I do my best to save all the lives I can, but shelters (animal protection societies) are always full and there are more animals coming in than out.

I'd only like to state the following: DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE THERE ARE DOGS DYING IN SHELTERS.

Hate me if you wish. The truth hurts and that's the way reality is.

I only hope that someone reading this has changed their mind about breeding, abandoning their pet at a shelter or about buying a dog.

I hope one day someone comes in at my place and tells me: I've read this and want to adopt. Then it would make it worth it.

I don't think I need to add anything.

What could have been... but wasn't'

I'm back with yet another post about the beauty stores and drugstores we visited in Amsterdam and today is Inglot's turn and you'll be in for a shock when I tell you that was a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. The words 'Inglot' and 'disappointment' together in the same sentence? No way!! I guess that's what you're probably thinking right now. Well, if you want to know why, keep on reading.

Before the holidays, as part of the research we always do when we travel abroad about the different hotels, restaurants and so on, we spent a few days checking out the 'go to' places to go make-up shopping, lol. On the store locator on Inglot's corporate website, we saw they had a store in Amsterdam and decided we'd definitely be paying it a visit. This professional make-up brand from Poland has been very much talked of lately, first by Wayne Goss and then by many others like our Adriana from Colourful Randomness or Isa from Amigas Makeup, who have been praising this brand and making us drool in front of the computer screen every now and then. We therefore read lots of reviews and saw endless swatches and were already taking for granted our flying back home with our coveted Duraline and eyeshadow palettes. The Amsterdam store is pricier than the Inglot stores here in Spain, so we'd decided to settle for a 4-eyeshadow palette. I literally dreamt to have Inglot's matte black eyeshadow for my flamenco stage looks and well, because a good black eyeshadow is a must-have, an investment. Does 'The Milkmaid's Tale' ring a bell?

After endless queries online, I could not find any info about the store's opening times and I still don't have a clue now. Dear Inglot Amsterdam folks, is it sooo very hard to put a *damn* doorsign with that info??? We first tried on Day 4, after visiting the museums in the area (Rijksmuseum, Diamant and Van Gogh) and in a way, we were even 'lucky' -ironic mode ON- that day, as the store was closed but the employees were still inside, cleaning and tidying up. There was light inside and you know what they say, when there's light, there is hope. It was quarter past five, so we assumed the store closed at 5pm. At five friggin' pm, ladies!!! I'd bet my life that's the time the Inglot stores in Spain OPEN. When on earth can Amsterdam ladies go shopping with such crazy timetables?? Or maybe the question should be, when do they work?? Because I used to work for a multinational company for some years and we had to work 9am to 6pm, with just a one-hour lunchbreak. And 99.9% of days we had to stay until 8pm, without them paying overtime. Think about it the next time you read about Spaniards being lazy workers!!
Yes, combining sightseeing and shopping in Amsterdam can be a little bit trying.
We took photos of the store from outside and Marian swears she had spotted the Duraline. And no, we didn't take pics of our sorry, disappointed faces.

¡Pues NO!

So the next day, we decided to play it safe and check out Inglot first and thought the store was sure to be open at 10.30. Guessed wrong, it WASN'T!! We took a walk around Vondelpark and we gave up entirely a few expletives later, at about ten past eleven. The store was pitch black, the bars were down... not good. The thing was as dead as an Egyptian mummy. The worst thing is that we could have spared the journey had they had an info board with the opening times. As easy as that, Inglot folks!!

And so the story ends. No happily ever after.

Hi again,

I've just seen a video on YT from the famous Spanish guru Azucena Morales, love her southern accent with 'ceceo' btw. She was sent one of those laser hair removal devices for home use -free of charge- and has no problem in saying they're CRAP. Olé/Amén to that and to her.

Both my sister and I have spent our hard-earned money -she did so on two different occassions, me just once- for nothing at different clinics.
The first time, when she noticed no results, her dermathologist told her the treatment was unsuccessful due to 'hormonal changes' and the second time she refused to continue the treatment because they kept using it on areas where she had -notice the *past tense*- no hair at all at the time. The outcome: she still has to remove her facial hair, even in areas where she didn't have to before.

As for me, I think I quit the treatment for the same reason after my 5th session, because I saw it was a useless waste of money, and because of their insisting on using it on areas where it was completely unnecessary. And yes, I still have to remove my facial hair just like I did before the treatment. Good old wax, cheap and reliable or tweezers.

In our humble opinion, the only laser procedure we swear by and is worth it is laser eye surgery. THAT was money well spent. Though I still have about one dioptre in one eye, I was well informed about how my case was more difficult than hers and didn't feel cheated out of my money or anything. I decided to go ahead and don't regret it.

If you've tried this procedure and it worked for you, so much the better. Congratulations. This is just my opinion. I just felt like sharing my views with you and rant a bit after watching her video. Have you tried laser treatments? Did they work for you?
