Hola de nuevo, chicas:

Hacía mucho que no os traía ninguna entrada de costura.

Sé que no es ninguna novedad hacer una entrada de confección de mascarillas, pero dado que van a ser un complemento más de ahora en adelante, por lo menos hacerlas un poco bonitas.

Al principio las hacía con tela de uniformes viejos, y eran muy toscas, porque las hice al inicio del confinamiento con el material que tenía en casa.

Ahora he pulido la técnica, y estas mascarillas ya se pueden enseñar.

La idea surgió tras leer una entrada del blog de *Saruski*, y me animé a hacerlas.

El patrón lo he descargado del blog de Entremanos, y para documentarme bien, vi su vídeo en Youtube.
He seguido bastante fielmente las instrucciones que Paz nos da en su vídeo, aunque he introducido una pequeña variación; y es que yo he cosido las gomas.

Tranquilas, que ahora os explico el paso a paso.

Estas mascarillas llevan un pequeño bolso para meter un filtro.

Cortamos tres piezas de tela: dos iguales para el exterior y el interior de la mascarilla, y otra más estrecha para el bolsillo (para ello doblamos el patrón por las líneas).



Cortamos también dos trozos de goma, de unos 15 cm cada uno.

En primer lugar, cosemos las pinzas de cada una de las piezas de tela.
En la pieza de tela del bolsillo, cosemos también el dobladillo de los dos laterales.



A continuación, ponemos la pieza de tela del bolsillo encima de la pieza de tela del interior de la mascarilla. Hacemos coincidir las costuras de las pinzas.
Para no confundiros, las dos piezas deben quedar con el derecho hacia arriba.


Después ponemos la pieza del exterior de la mascarilla encima de las otras dos. Pero esta vez, con el derecho hacia abajo.
Hacemos coincidir las costuras de las pinzas, y fijamos con alfileres para que no se mueva.



Ahora cosemos los laterales, pero antes, metemos uno de los extremos de las tiras de goma.
Cosemos el lateral, y antes de terminar, colocamos el final de la tira de goma para coserlo.
Cosemos el contorno de la mascarilla, y llegamos al otro lateral.
Colocamos la goma, pero esta vez cosemos sólo los extremos, donde va la goma, dejando un hueco en el medio, para poder dar la vuelta a la mascarilla.
Cosemos el otro lado de la mascarilla.

Ahora le damos la vuelta. Nos aseguramos de sacar bien toda la tela hasta la costura. Nos podemos ayudar de un alfiler, o con los dedos.

Empezamos cosiendo el lado por el que le hemos dado la vuelta. Metemos los extremos de la tela hacia dentro, y cosemos.
A continuación, cosemos todo alrededor, lo más pegado al borde posible.
Para ello, yo he cambiado el prensatelas normal de la máquina, por el de coser cremalleras.



¡Ya está! Mascarilla terminada.



Tengo un montón de restos de tela de otros proyectos, así que tengo tarea.

It's been a really long time since I had a DIY -sewing post for you.

It's hardly surprising to upload a post on how to make reusable face masks these days, but since they're now part of the new normal, let's make the most of it and at least put on something that looks nice.

At first, I made them repurposing old white uniforms and they were fairly basic since I made those using whatever I had at home in the first days of the lockdown.

I've now perfected the technique and I'm ready to share with the world the latest ones I've sewn. 

I came up with the idea after reading a post from Saruski's blog, and I decided to make them.  

I downloaded the pattern from the blog 'Entremanos' and watched her YouTube video.

I followed her instructions quite faithfully, but with a small variation: I sewed the elastic.



Don't panic. Here's the step by step.

These face masks have a small pocket to put a filter.

Cut three pieces of fabric: two of the same size (one for the outer part, and the other for the inner one), and the last one is narrower (this will be the pocket).
To cut this last piece, just fold the pattern along the lines.

Cut two pieces of elastic (about 15 cm each).

First of all, sew the darts of all the pieces of fabric.
Sew also the hem on both sides of the piece of fabric for the pocket.



Now place the piece of fabric for the pocket on the piece of fabric for the inner side of the mask.
The seams of the darts must be one just above the other.
Make sure both pieces of fabric are right sides up.

After that, place the other piece of fabric over the other two. But this time, the wrong side up. 
Put pins on the seams of the darts on every piece of fabric.


Now sew the sides, but before that, put the elastic in, sew the side and before finishing, put the other side of the elastic in place to sew it.
Sew with a straight stitch all around the mask until you get to the other side.
Place the other elastic, but this time just sew the edges, leaving a gap in the middle to turn the mask inside out.
Sew the other long side of the mask. 

Now turn the mask inside out, making sure to take all the fabric out to the seam.
You can do this with a pin, or with your fingers.

Start sewing the 'unsewn' side, turning the edges of the fabric inside.
Sew with a straight stitch all around, as close to the edge as you possibly can.
I changed the universal presser foot for the zipper presser foot.

Ta dah! Here's the finished face mask.





I have a lot of fabric scraps left from other projects to make more masks, so I have a lot of work to do if I want to.

Hazlo tú / DIY: Transforma tus vaqueros... ¡en una minifalda! / Transform your jeans... into a mini-skirt!

Hola, chicas:

Ha pasado mucho, mucho tiempo desde mi último tutorial de costura.
Últimamente tengo a tope mi lado creativo.
Entre hacer mis potingues, las manualidades (que he estado haciendo este último cuatrimestre, aunque no haya compartido nada aquí) y la costura...

En fin, que aquí vengo con este tutorial, aunque debéis saber que la idea no es mía.
La tomé prestada de *este* video.

Tenía estos vaqueros que ya no me ponía. Eran demasiado acampanados, y el bajo empezaba a estar muy perjudicado.
Pero me daba pena tirarlos, porque la tela es muy buena.
Así que, después de ver el vídeo que os he mencionado arriba, decidí transformarlos en una minifalda.

Lo primero que tenéis que hacer es medir el largo que queréis para la falda, y marcarlo de un lado y de otro.
Ahora, cortad en línea recta por las señales, de manera que nos quede un short.

Ahora hay que descoser la costura de las perneras por dentro.

Por delante, se descose el tiro hasta la cremallera. Por detrás, se descose hasta la mitad de los bolsillos.

Le damos la vuelta y por la parte de atrás, cogemos el tiro. Queda un pico. Trazamos una línea recta desde donde hemos descosido hasta abajo, y cortamos. Fijamos con alfileres. Hacemos pespunte sencillo y rematamos con zig-zag. Empezamos a coser desde el pespunte original, para que no se note.

Ahora planchamos bien la costura que nos ha quedado, para asentarla. Queda un pico, que cortaremos.

En la parte delantera, llevamos las costuras laterales hasta el borde. Cogemos un trozo de tela de ese mismo vaquero, lo ponemos del revés, y marcamos.
Cortamos, dejando margen de costura.
Cosemos en zig-zag por los lados.
Abajo no, porque es lo que vamos a desflecar.




Lo fijamos con alfileres. Y cosemos desde el tiro hacia abajo. Ahora desflecamos. Antes haremos una costura para poner el límite.

¡Listo! Adiós, vaqueros. Hola, minifalda.

¿Y el resto del pantalón se tira? De ninguna manera. Ya pensaré qué hacer con la tela que me ha sobrado. Hasta entonces, la dejaré bien guardada.

It's been a long, long time since my last sewing tutorial.
I'm all out exploiting my creative side lately and between experimenting with DIY skincare, handcrafts -I attended a workshop for the last four months, although I haven't shared any of my projects here - and now sewing...

Anyway, I have a tutorial for you today, though I must give credit where it is due. Here's the link to the *video* I got my inspiration from.

I had these jeans I rarely wore anymore, as they were too flared and the hem was beginning to look too worn out. But I felt bad throwing them away, because the fabric was really sturdy.
So when I saw the video above, I knew upcycling them was the way to go. And this miniskirt is the end result.

The first thing you need to do is measure the length you want your skirt to have and mark it from side to side.
Now cut the trousers along the marks you traced and you're supposed to get something resembling a short when you're done.




Now unstitch the hem at the legs on the inside.
At the front, you need to unstitch the rise until you reach the zip. At the back, do the same until you reach the middle of the back pockets.

Flip the garment inside out, and take the rise from the back. Now mark a straight line from where we'd unstitched before, all the way down.
Then cut, considering the seam allowance.
Set with pins. Sew a straight stitch and overlock the hem with a zig-zag stitch.
Start sewing from the original stitch, to make the seam less noticeable.
Now iron the back of the skirt, and then trim the small corner at the end.

Now, with the right side of the garment up, take the side seams to the edge. Take a piece of the jeans, and mark it on the wrong side of the piece. Trim the excess fabric (keeping the seam allowance), and sew a zig-zag stitch on both sides of the triangle. 
Don't overlock the bottom, because we'll make a frayed edge.

Now set with pins and sew from the rise all the way down. Then make the frayed edge, but sew a straight stitch where you want the limit of this frayed edge to be.

Ready to go! Bye bye, jeans. Hello, miniskirt.

So what will we be doing with the rest of the jeans? Are we throwing it away? No way.
I still don't know what to do with that fabric. Meanwhile, I'll keep it safe.

Piratas de Decathlon - Decathlon hackers.

Cuando os hablé de la overlock que compré recientemente en Lidl, os dije que había comprado en Decathlon una bolsa de deporte que me servía perfectamente para guardarla.

Aunque seguramente no estaré transportando la overlock de un lado para otro, sí quiero tenerla protegida, por eso decidí tunear la bolsa, haciéndole un acolchado.

When I told you about the overlock machine I recently bought at Lidl, I told you that I had bought a sports bag at Decathlon, which was OK to carry it.

Though I surely won't be carrying the overlock back and forth, I would like to keep it well protected; that's why I decided to hack the bag, making a cushioning.

Ahora os preguntaréis por qué he titulado esta entrada "Piratas de Decathlon". Pues bien, porque el producto que he comprado para hacer el acolchado también es de Decathlon.

Se trata de *esta* colchoneta de espuma para aerobic, que mide 140x50 cm. Me costó 2,75 €.

Now you'll probably be wondering why I titled this post 'Decathlon Hackers'. Well, I got the product I used for padding the inside at Decathlon. It's *this* fitness mat, measuring 140x50 cm. I paid 2.75 EUR for it, but price in the UK is £2.99.

Tomé las medidas oportunas, corté la espuma y la forré con una tela para este fin que compré en el mercadillo (o como lo solemos llamar, "el Corte Inglés de los domingos").

Este tuneo ha sido la forma de estrenar la overlock, para rematar los bordes de la tela.

I took all the measurements, cut the mat to size and lined it with a piece of fabric I bought for this purpose at the street market (or as we use to call it, 'the Sunday Department Store').

This hack has been the best way to use the overlock for the first time, to overcast the edges of the fabric.

Una vez metido el acolchado dentro de la bolsa, pruebo a meter la máquina, y queda perfectamente protegida. ¡Misión cumplida!

Once the cushioning is placed in the bag, I try to put the machine in it, and it's perfectly protected. Mission accomplished!

Hazlo tú / DIY: Juguete antiestrés para mascotas - Anti-stress toy for pets.

Hola, chicas:

Os traigo en esta ocasión un 'hazlo tú' para vuestros amigos peludos.

Molly es una gata muy tranquila en general. Si no fuera así, me sería imposible disfrazarla en Navidad para felicitaros las fiestas, y que hiciera de notaria peluda para nosotras en los sorteos de este blog.

Pero todo eso cambia cuando le toca meterse en el transportín y/o viajar en coche.
Ahí la pobre es un manojo de nervios.
No os imagináis cómo babea.

He probado todo lo que me han recomendado los veterinarios, con escaso resultado (tranquilizantes en pastilla, feromona felina en spray).
Hasta el punto de que me han dicho que lo único que me queda es aguantarme. A mí me da igual tener que limpiarle las babas, o incluso bañarla, cuando llego de viaje, pero creo que la pobre gata lo pasa mal, y me gustaría poder hacer algo para remediarlo.

Entonces dí con *esta* página, y se me ocurrió poner en práctica el remedio que sugerían.

He utilizado valeriana y manzanilla, que son las hierbas que tengo en casa, para hacerle un juguete antiestrés. Y la tela que he usado también la tenía ya en casa, así que no he tenido que comprar nada.

He llenado un sobrecito de papel, de los que se utilizan para las infusiones, con una bolsita de valeriana y 2 cucharaditas de manzanilla.
He cerrado la bolsita con un poco de cinta adhesiva. Luego he cortado un trozo de tela un poco acolchada (podéis utilizar fieltro o guata), y he cortado la tela exterior un poco más grande.




He envuelto la bolsita de papel con las hierbas en la tela gris (la acolchada).
Ahora sobrehilamos la tela exterior, para que no se deshilache. Doblamos la tela a la mitad y hacemos una costura. La abrimos y metemos el relleno en su interior, y cosemos alrededor. Cortamos todos los hilitos sobrantes, y ya lo tenemos.




Ahora vamos a ver si a Molly le gusta.

Y... prueba superada. Ha estado jugando y echando unas cuantas carreras.
La valeriana produce un efecto de euforia en los gatos, pero después se quedan muy relajados.

Espero que me funcione en los viajes y visitas al veterinario. Ya os contaré.

I'm here with a 'DIY' for your furry friends.

Molly is a very quiet cat in general.
If not, I wouldn't be able to put a costume on her to wish you a Merry Christmas, or make her to be our furry notary public in the giveaways for this blog.

But everything changes when she has to get on her pet carrier and/or travel by car.
Then she turns into a bundle of nerves.
You can't imagine how much she drools at the thought of having to go somewhere.

I've tried everything different vets have suggested with poor results (calming pills, feline pheromone in spray).
So now I've been told to cope with this.
I don't mind cleaning Molly's slobber or even bathe her when I get to my destination, but I think poor Molly feels really bad, so I'd like to do something to fix this situation.

So I read *this* website, and I came up with the idea of practising the remedy they suggested.

I used valerian and chamomile, which are the herbs I have at home, to make an anti-stress toy for her. I also had at home the pieces of fabric I use, so I haven't had to buy anything.

I filled a paper sachet (those used to make tea) with a sachet of valerian and 2 teaspoons of chamomile.
I closed the filter with a piece of adhesive tape. Then I cut a piece of padded fabric (you can use felt, for example), and cut the outer fabric (a bigger size than the padded fabric).
I wrapped the paper sachet with the herbs in it with the grey piece of fabric (the padded one).



Now we whipstitch the outer fabric, to prevent it from fraying. Then fold the fabric in half and sew a straight stitch. Now we open it and put the filling inside, and sew all around it. 
Now trim the excess threads, and that's it!




Let's now see if Molly likes the toy.

So... likeability test passed! She's been playing with it and running.
Valerian produces euphoria on cats, but afterwards they become very quiet and relaxed.

I hope it works on travels and visits to the vet. I'll tell you.

Un compañero para mi butaca - A mate for my armchair.

¿Os acordáis de la butaca que os enseñé *aquí*? Pues mi madre ha encontrado un compañero perfecto. Se trata de este reposapiés que compró en la tienda de muebles de segunda mano de la que ya os hemos hablado. Regateando, regateando, se la llevó por 15€.

Al igual que la butaca, estaba bastante gastado, así que había que hacerle un buen lavado de cara, y ponerlo a juego con la butaca.



Lo primero de todo es desmontarlo y lijar todas las piezas. Creo que en este caso no hubo desperfectos que reparar.
Se pintan todas las piezas y se dejan secar.
Una vez secas, se montan otra vez.
Ahora ya sólo falta la tapicería.

Como me sobró bastante tela después de hacer la tapicería de la butaca, corté unos cuadraditos de distintas telas y los uní de la forma que veis más arriba a la derecha.

Ahora llega el turno del tapicero, que como de costumbre, ha hecho un gran trabajo, por el que nos cobró 18€.
¿Qué os parece? 

Do you remember the armchair I showed you *here*? Well, my mum has found the perfect companion to it. She got this footstool from the second-hand furniture store we've mentioned already. After some bargaining, she got it for €15.

Just like the armchair, it had seen better days and needed a 'facelift' and being revamped to match the armchair too.

The first thing we did was disassemble it and sand all the different pieces. In this case, I think there were no dents to fix.
Next, all pieces need to be painted and left to dry. Once dry, it's time to put all the pieces back together. All is left to do is re-upholster it.



I had lots of leftover fabric from the armchair, so I cut several squares off the different pieces and sewed them together, as pictured.



 The last stage of the project was carried out by the upholsterer, who again did a great job. We paid €18 for that.

Hazlo tú / DIY: Butaca de sosa a fabulosa - From drab to fab armchair.

Cuando os presentamos *esta* entrada, os comentamos que teníamos entre manos un proyecto un tanto laborioso de restauración/decoración, que iba a requerir un poco de ayuda profesional.

When we uploaded *this* post, we told you that we were working on a decor/DIY project, a more complex one that would require some professional input.
Well, we've recently finished that project and are now ready to proudly share it with you.

When we went to Portugal in the summer to order the new furniture for my living-room, I was drooling over a gorgeous piece I saw through a shop window The reason? They had a gorgeous armchair on display, very similar to *this one*. They asked me €550 for it, but considering it was upholstered with fabric imitating patchwork, I thought it was too pricey for me.
At this store you can find them upholstered in real patchwork, but they're much more expensive, as you will see if you click on the link.

But it was too late. I was already head over heels in love with that armchair, so I had to own a more affordable alternative.
As my mother and Marox are really good at finding bargains, they went to a second-hand furniture store (the same place where they found the headboards we already showed you), and came back with this armchair they got for €110 after some bargaining.

I know you're very eager to see the end result, so let's move on to the step-by-step.

First of all, remove the old fabric from the armchair.
After that, sand the entire surface with an electric sander, except for the arms and curved areas, where we'll use a sanding sponge for a neater job.
Then we need to repair all damaged areas with some woodfiller, and let it dry for 24 hours. Next we have to sand those parts again to remove any excess filler.



We continue by applying one coat of worm-fighting primer to protect the wood, and let it dry for 24 or 48 hours.
Now take a paintbrush for wood, and apply one coat of satin plastic paint (it'll be beautiful). Let it dry for one or two days.
If you want the grain to be seen, you can sand wherever you want with a sanding sponge. If not, then apply the second coat of paint and let dry for one or two days.
Now apply a coat of satin varnish, to protect the paint.

Tip: Whenever possible, try to use water-based products, this way the smell will be softer and your brushes will be easier to clean too.

This part of the project was done by both my parents and sister. I was going to be in charge of the next stage myself: sewing.

I had never done patchwork in my entire life, but I consider myself self-taught at this sort of thing. The Internet is an excellent tool for this, so I watched many videos on YT and read some blogs about it to get the basics right. As ready as I could ever be, I got on with it.
My mother and I went to some stores and street markets to 'hunt down' some fabric for the upholstery.



Instead of making a gigantic fabric made of cloth pieces sewn together, I thought it would be wiser to make smaller pieces, using the different pieces we took out before as a pattern. Having more manageable pieces sounded easier.
I made them a bit larger than needed, so as not to make the upholsterer's job any more difficult.
I cut my pieces of fabric in different sizes (big, small, wide, narrow) and shapes: rectangular, square (or almost).
To prevent them from fraying, I serged them with my beloved overlock machine from Lidl. Marox also helped me with this step, finishing the loop-stitches by hand.
I then arranged the pieces to my liking, and I sewed them together with my sewing machine.

Once all the pieces are finished, it's time for part three of this project, carried out by the upholsterer.
He told me that he had never upholstered anything with patchworked fabric, so he was curious to try. He said it very interesting for him, but also very laborious. Fortunately he didn't charge us more and kept the price he'd originally given us in his estimate, €100.

We paid about €30 for the paint. Considering the estimated total price of the fabric was about €50, the average price of the whole project has been about €290. A few of the scraps were quite big, so we'll see if I can do something else with them too.

After such a hard work, here is the finished product. What do you think? Do you like it?

Pues bien, el proyecto ya está terminado, y quería compartirlo con vosotras.

Cuando fuimos a Portugal en verano para encargar los muebles nuevos para mi salón, me quedé embobada ante el escaparate de una tienda. ¿La razón? Había visto una butaca muy parecida a *ésta*. Me pedían 550 euros por ella, y para estar tapizada con una tela que imita patchwork, me parecía demasiado.
En esta otra tienda los tienen de patchwork de verdad, pero cuestan mucho más caros, como podréis ver si pincháis en el enlace.

Pero ya era demasiado tarde. Me había enamorado de esa butaca, así que tenía que hacerme con una por menos dinero.
Como mi madre y Marox son especialistas en encontrar gangas, se fueron a una tienda de muebles de segunda mano (el Rastro Reto, donde encontraron los cabeceros que ya os enseñamos en su día), y vinieron con esta butaca, que compraron por 110€ tras un poco de regateo.

Como sé que estáis deseando ver el resultado final, vamos a empezar con el paso a paso.



Lo primero de todo es quitarle la tela vieja a la butaca.
Después, se pasa la lijadora a toda la madera; los brazos y torneados, con una esponja de lija.

    Se reparan las imperfecciones, grietas y rozaduras con masilla para rellenar madera,

se deja secar durante 24 horas, se vuelven a lijar con el taco de lija esas zonas para quitar el exceso de producto.

     Damos una mano de imprimación con tratamiento anticarcoma y protección de la madera. Dejar secar durante 24 ó 48 horas.

     Con una paletina, dar una mano de pintura plástica satinada (queda precioso). Dejar secar un día o dos.

Si queréis que se vea la veta, podéis lijar en las zonas que queráis. Si no, podéis dar la segunda mano de pintura y dejar secar uno o dos días.

     Dar una mano de barniz satinado, para proteger la pintura.

Consejo: Intentad que estos productos sean al agua, el olor será mucho más suave y también limpiaréis las brochas con más facilidad.

Hasta aquí la primera parte del proyecto, que ha corrido a cargo de mis padres y mi hermana. Ahora viene la segunda parte, de la que me he encargado yo: la costura.

Yo no había hecho patchwork nunca en mi vida, pero me considero una autodidacta en estos temas. Como Internet es muy bueno para estas cosas, me ví unos cuantos vídeos en youtube y leí unos cuantos blogs, y cuando me sentí preparada, me puse a ello.

Mi madre y yo nos recorrimos varias tiendas y mercadillos en busca de las telas para hacer la tapicería.

En lugar de hacer una pieza de patchwork gigante, me pareció más adecuado hacer varias más pequeñas, de acuerdo al tamaño de los trozos de la tela vieja que quitamos. Será mucho más fácil de manejar.

Dejé un poco más de margen, para ponérselo un poco más fácil al tapicero.

Corté las distintas piezas de tela, unas más grandes, otras más pequeñas, unas rectangulares, otras cuadradas (o casi), anchas, estrechas...

Para que no se deshilacharan, las remallé con mi adorada overlock de Lidl. Marox también me ayudó en esto, rematando las cadenetas a mano.

Luego las dispuse como me pareció, y las uní con la máquina de coser.

Una vez que todas las piezas están terminadas, viene la tercera parte del proyecto, a cargo del tapicero.

Por lo que me comentó, nunca había tapizado con patchwork, lo que le resultó muy interesante, pero también muy laborioso. Afortunadamente, nos mantuvo el precio que nos dio como presupuesto, 100€.
Las pinturas nos costaron unos 30€. Teniendo en cuenta que el coste aproximado de las telas ha sido de unos 50€, el coste (también aproximado) del proyecto ha sido de unos 290€. De algunas telas, los retales eran enormes además, así que lo mismo hago alguna otra cosilla con ellos.

Después de tan duro trabajo, aquí está el resultado. ¿Qué os parece? ¿Os gusta?

    

Nuevo neceser para Marox - New toilet bag for Marox.

Hoy vengo a enseñaros el neceser que he hecho para Marox. Bueno, en realidad la idea era hacer un estuche para guardar los lápices, porque el suyo estaba ya muy deteriorado. Como estuche es demasiado grande, así que lo va a usar como neceser.

Today I'm showing you the toilet bag I made for Marox. Well, the original idea was to make a pencil case, because the one she has had a lot of use already. It's too big to use it as a pencil case, so she's using it as a toilet bag.

No he tenido que comprar nada para hacer este proyecto "costuril", porque eran cosas que tenía en casa.
La tela era de la tapicería antigua de mis sofás. Le pedí a la modista que me hizo las fundas nuevas que me guardara la tela de las antiguas, porque la iba a reciclar. Y así ha sido. Bueno, todavía me queda mucha tela, obviamente.
Para el forro, he usado la misma tela que utilicé cuando hice el bolso de los vaqueros, y que os enseñé en *esta* entrada. Para el almohadillado, he usado la guata que compré cuando hice las nuevas mantas de brochas, que también os enseñé *aquí*. Y la cremallera es una de las muchas que compré en el mercadillo cuando me empezó la fiebre por los proyectos costuriles.

I didn't have to buy anything for this 'sewing project', as they all were things that I already had at home.

The outer fabric was my sofas' old upholstery. I asked the seamstress who made the new covers to keep the fabric of the old ones, because I wanted to recycle it. And so I have. Well, I still have quite a big amount of fabric left, obviously.

I've used the same lining fabric that I used when I made that purse from a pair of old jeans, which I showed you *here*. For the padding, I've used the wadding I bought for the new brushrolls I made, which I also showed you in *this* post. And the zipper is one of the many I bought at the street market when my 'sewing projects fever' began.

Mis conocimientos de costura son bastante limitados (pero una es muy atrevida para estas cosas), pero encontré dos vídeos muy buenos en Youtube que me han servido de guía para hacer este neceser.
Han sido estos tutoriales de nairamkitty (en español), y de TheCraftyGemini (en inglés, aunque también tiene algún vídeo en español, pero no éste en concreto).

My sewing skills are quite limited (but I'm very daring for this kind of things), but I found two excellent videos on YT which have served me as a guide to make this toilet bag.

These were two tutorials from nairamkitty (in Spanish), and TheCraftyGemini (in English, although she has some videos in Spanish, but not this one) respectively.

No os puedo enseñar el paso a paso, porque lamentablemente no hice fotos del proceso, pero sí que hice del resultado final, que ahora vais a ver.

I can't show you the step-by-step, because unfortunately I didn't take photos of the process, but I did take some of the final result, which you can see below.

Os presento ... mi nueva manta de brochas - Meet ... my new brushroll.

Hace no muchas entradas que os enseñé mi máquina overlock, y en esa entrada os comenté de pasada que había hecho una nueva manta de brochas (aunque para hacerla, no he utilizado la overlock). Bueno, en realidad he hecho 2: una para mí y otra para mi hermana.

La antigua que hice, y que os enseñé *aquí*, está ya un poco deteriorada por el uso. Se había empezado a deshilachar, supongo que por el roce con las fundas para las brochas (que os enseñamos en *esta otra entrada*).

When I showed you my overlock machine, just a few posts ago, I told you that I had made a new brushroll (although I didn't use the overlock to make it). Well, I actually made 2: one for me and the other one for my sister.
The old one I made, which I showed you *here*, is a bit damaged and worn from use. It had started to fray because the brush guards (which we showed you on *this post*) touched the fabric all the time.

Desde que pensé en hacer una manta nueva, he visto muchos tutoriales, en busca de otras formas de hacerla. El que más me ha inspirado ha sido *este video* de nairamkitty.

Así que más o menos he seguido sus pasos.

Ever since I thought of making a new one, I've seen many tutorials looking for other ways to make it. The one that inspired me the most was *this video* from nairamkitty.
So I've followed her steps.

Para hacerla necesitaréis:

*Tela (para el exterior y para el forro).

*Guata (para el acolchado).

*Cinta de raso para el lazo.

Y obviamente, aguja, hilo, máquina de coser, tijeras... esas cosas.

To make this brushroll you'll need:

*Fabric (for the outer part and also lining fabric).
*Wadding (for the cushioning).
*Satin tape for the ribbon.
And obviously, needle, thread, sewing machine, scissors... those kind of things.

Corta un rectángulo grande de tela, otro de forro y otro de guata. Ahora, corta un rectángulo de la misma anchura, pero más corto que el anterior, de tela (que será para guardar las brochas).

Por último, corta otro rectángulo (de tela, forro y guata) de la misma anchura que los otros, y de la altura que quieras para hacer la solapa que tapará las brochas.

Después de esta parrafada, os enseño una foto, que es como mejor se entiende todo.

Esta es la idea.

Cut a big rectangle of fabric, lining fabric and wadding. Now cut a rectangle of fabric of the same width, but shorter than the other one (in which we're going to store the brushes). And finally, cut another rectangle (of fabric, lining and wadding) the same width as the others, and the height you want to make the flap that will cover the brushes.
After this whole 'brick' text, I show you a pic, so you can understand everything.
This is the idea.

Ahora cogemos el trozo de tela donde irán guardadas las brochas. Cosemos el dobladillo para que no se deshilache. A continuación, marcamos con alfileres los huecos para las brochas.

Pick the piece of fabric for storing the brushes. Sew the hem to prevent it from fraying. Afterwards, mark the spaces for the brushes with pins.

De los rectángulos pequeños de telas que forman la solapa, vamos a colocarlas en el siguiente orden: primero, la guata; encima, la tela exterior con el derecho hacia arriba, y arriba del todo, el forro.

Ahora hacemos la costura por todos los lados menos por el de arriba, para poder darle la vuelta.

Now take all the smallest rectangles and put them in this order: first of all, the wadding; then, the outer fabric right side up, and the lining fabric on top.
Now sew the seam all the way around except the upper part, to turn it upside down.

Ahora colocamos, en este orden, el rectángulo grande de guata, el rectángulo grande de forro y el rectángulo pequeño de tela donde van guardadas las brochas (en el que ya hemos marcado los huecos con alfileres).

Pues bien, lo alineamos todo y sujetamos con alfileres para que no se nos mueva.

Now we put, in this order, the bigger rectangle of wadding, the bigger rectangle of lining and the smallest rectangle of fabric where the brushes will be stored (and that we marked with pins).
Well, now align everything and fix with pins to prevent it from moving.

A continuación, cosemos los huecos por las marcas que hemos hecho. Nos quedaría así.

Next, we sew the spaces following the marks we've done. It looks like this.

Ahora cogemos la solapa y la presentamos. Fijamos con alfileres.

Now we take the flap and put in the right position, and fix with pins.

Medimos la mitad de la longitud de la cinta de raso, marcamos la medida. Cosemos la cinta al rectángulo grande de tela. Enrollamos con cuidado y lo sujetamos con un imperdible para que no nos moleste al coser. Ahora cogemos la tela y la presentamos con el derecho hacia abajo encima del resto de la manta. Fijamos con alfileres. Cosemos todo alrededor salvo un espacio de unos 10 ó 15 cm en la parte de abajo, que es por donde le daremos la vuelta. Cortamos las esquinas para que sea más fácil.

Take the satin tape and fold it in half, and mark this point. Sew the tape on the biggest rectangle of fabric. Roll it carefully and fix with a safety pin, so it doesn't get in the wayfor when we sew. Now take that piece of fabric, right side down, on top on the rest of the brushroll. Fix with pins. Sew all the way around, except 10 or 15 cm on the middle of the lower part, to be able to turn it upside down. Cut the corners to make this step easier.

Una vez le hayamos dado la vuelta, ya sólo nos queda coser a mano con puntada invisible.

Y ya tenemos lista nuestra manta. ¿Os ha gustado?




Once it's turned upside down, we just have to sew by hand, with a blind stitch so the brushroll is ready to use. Do you like it?

Como ya sabéis, hace poco le regalé a Marox un lector de libros electrónicos, en concreto el Sony PRS-T1. Mes y medio después, la tienda donde lo compré sigue sin haber recibido las fundas oficiales con luz (que por cierto, la tengo pagada), y claro, algo teníamos que hacer con estas manitas para solucionarlo.

As you already know, I gave Marox an E-book reader for Christmas, in particular, the new Sony PRS-T1. A month and a half later, the store where I got it from has still not received the official lit case that I ordered (and had to pay in advance). Obviously, we had to do something about it.

Tras ver varios tutoriales en Internet con ideas diversas, desde vaciar un libro a la típica funda calcetín, pasando por estuches de lapiceros, nos pusimos manos a la obra y éste es el resultado.




After watching several tutorials on the Internet with different ideas, ranging from emptying a book to the typical stocking-case, going through pencil cases, we decided to put shoulders to the wheel and this is the final result.

Coste del proyecto: 3 € (tuvimos que comprar pegamento).
El resto de materiales, los teníamos en casa o bien no nos costaron nada.

Costs of the project: €3 (we had to buy some glue).
The rest of the materials, either we already had them at home or we got them for free.

Comenzamos sacando el cartón a un archivador que en mi trabajo iban a tirar. Después, hicimos una plantilla con el lector, añadiendo un centímetro aproximadamente por cada lado. Hicimos un lomo del mismo cartón, que fijamos con esparadrapo flexible por los dos lados (y es que en casa de una enfermera siempre hay esparadrapo).




We started by taking the cardboard out of a folder at my work place that was going to the rubbish. After that, we made a template with the e-book reader, adding 1cm approximately on each side. We made a spine from the same cardboard, and fixed it with flexible surgical tape on both sides (there's always surgical tape at a nurse's).

Después, y para que la tapa no resultara tan dura, la forramos con un trozo de foamy (también llamada goma eva) del mismo tamaño. Forramos tanto la tapa delantera como la trasera.




After that, in order to get a softer lid, we covered it with a piece of foamy the same size. We covered both the front and the back lids.

A continuación, cortamos dos trozos de tela (en nuestro caso, elegí la de un pijama viejo, que estaba ya desgastado) de una medida un poquito mayor que las tapas (para tener espacio para hacer las costuras). Haremos como una especie de bolsita en cuyo interior meteremos la cubierta de lo que será la funda del e-book; por lo tanto, dejaremos un lado sin coser, para poder meterla.



Then we cut two pieces of fabric (in this case, from an old and worn out pyjamas) a little bit bigger than the lids (to have enough space for the seams). We're making some sort of bag where we'll put the cover of the e-book reader case; that's why, at this point, we're leaving one side unsewed.

Una vez metida la cubierta dentro de la funda de tela, cosemos el lado que dejamos libre. Para hacer esta tarea más fácil, cortaremos un trozo de cinta adhesiva de doble cara y la pegaremos al cartón donde pegaremos la tela (uno de los lados). El otro lado lo doblamos a la misma medida y lo cosemos a mano.



Once this step is done, we have to sew the side we left open before. In order to make this step easier, we're cutting a piece of double-sided tape and we'll stick it to the cardboard where we're sticking the fabric (one of the sides). The other one will be bent the same size and sewed by hand.

Ahora cortamos dos trozos de foamy de la misma medida del e-book. Uno de ellos protegerá la pantalla cuando cerremos la funda, y sobre el otro, se colocará el e-book, sujeto por dos gomas, que coseremos con cuidado directamente al foamy. Antes de coser las gomas, tendremos la precaución de presentar el e-book sobre el foamy, teniendo cuidado de que las gomas no presionen u oculten algún botón importante (o la pantalla).




Now we cut two pieces of foamy the same size as the e-book reader. One of the pieces will protect the screen when we close the case, and the e-book will be placed over the other one, held by two pieces of rubber bands, which will be sewn carefully just over the foamy. Before sewing the rubber bands, we'll place the e-book reader on the piece of foamy, making sure the rubber bands don't press or hide any important button (or the screen).

Una vez hecho esto, ya sólo tenemos que pegar los trozos de foamy a la parte interior de cada una de las tapas, y comprobar que ha quedado bien pegado. Colocamos el e-book en su lugar bien sujeto, y ya podemos pasarnos las horas muertas leyendo, pues ya no tendremos que sacar el lector de su funda ni siquiera para cargarlo.



Once this step is done, we just have to stick the pieces of foamy to the inner part of each lid, and check it's really stuck. We put the e-book reader on its place, well fixed, and now it's time to while away our time reading, as we won't have to take the reader out of its case anymore, even for charging it.

**** Edito (marox): He observado que esta entrada en el blog está teniendo bastante éxito y me parece lógico hacer una actualización. Una vez recibida la funda oficial con luz de SONY, realmente ya no he vuelto a utilizar la que os enseño, que dicho sea de paso, cumplía muy bien su función. La funda de Sony tiene un gran fallo, y es que no se cierra del todo y simplemente proporciona una cubierta o tapas a nuestro libro. Evidentemente, nos pusimos manos a la obra para solucionarlo y esta vez fue mi señora madre la encargada de prepararme una solución. Os dejo unas fotos para que veáis esta segunda funda o 'cubrefunda'.

**** Edit (marox): I've noticed this particular blogpost is getting very popular and I therefore thought it was only fair to update it accordingly. Once I got the official lit case from SONY, I haven't really used the one in the above tutorial any more, though it did the job it was designed to quite well.
The official case has one big drawback and is the lack of a clasp of some sort. It only gives the Reader the appearance of a real book providing covers/flaps to it. We set to work it out and this time my dear mum came to the rescue. Here are a few pics for you to see this new case or case cover.



Me hizo una funda muy ajustadita en la que metemos la solapa izquierda de la funda oficial, la parte trasera quedaría suelta en cierto modo, pero la cerramos con una última solapa más pequeña que lleva un trozo de velcro cosido. No sé si me explico bien. Si tenéis alguna duda, no dudéis en preguntar.

She made me a cover that has a snug fit on the Reader. We slide the left flap of the official case into this, then the back part would be sort of loose but then fastening is provided by means of a smaller and final flap that has a piece of velcro sewed on. Don't know if I'm making myself understood. Feel free to ask anything if I'm not.

No me cobraron nada por la tela (la tienda es de una amiga y necesitaba un trozo pequeño) y el velcro lo tenía mi madre por casa.
I got the fabric for free at the store (the store belongs to a family friend and we only needed a small piece) and my mum had some leftover velcro at home.
