Thon Hotel Europa (Oslo)

Hola guapas:

Hi gorgeous,

As you may have guessed from the title, today's entry will be about the hotel we stayed at during our short stay in Oslo.
You can read the first part of our Oslo Travel Guide *here*, and part *two* and *three* as well.

Our chosen accommodation was the Thon Hotel Europa, just across the street from a larger, taller Radisson one. It's a five-minute walk from the main pedestrian street, Karl Johans Gate and from the Royal Palace. Oslo's Central Station is further, a 20-minute walk from there. The closest underground stop is National Theater.

Thon Hotels have many locations in town -we stumbled upon several during our sightseeing walks- and apparently some more in Brussels.

We made our reservation through Booking. If you create an account, it will give you access to exclusive deals. This hotel was one of their 'bargains of the day'. Our booking was for 4 night with breakfast included.
Don't forget to access the website through a cashback site such as *Beruby*, *Shoppiday*, *Topcashback* or Ebates (now *Rakuten*). Do compare the different sites available in your country to find the best cashback deal.
By the way, we've recently discovered *letyshops*, with lots of international online stores.

As you may have noticed from the pictures, rooms have maximalist décor. They all have a minifridge -great if you grab some food or drinks for dinner- that actually kept stuff cold, unlike others we've encountered. In addition, a kettle is also provided (tea and coffee-making facilities, as British travellers would call them), iron and ironing board, a safe, a colourful armchair and in the bathroom, a hair dryer.

Another plus, at least for us, was the fact that the room had wooden (or laminate, you get the point) floors, instead of the ever-present fitted carpet that as comfortable as may be is not the most hygienic thing to have in a busy environment like a hotel.
A nice touch was the umbrella provided, as that's something one seldom has room in their suitcase for.

On the subject of the bathroom, it was the only but major con about the room. That thing was teeny-tiny. I mentioned it at the front desk when we checked out and apparently they are all about the same size. It's square, slightly over 2 sq. metres and the toilet seat is so close to the washbasin that I challenge you not to hit yourself with any of them when inside.

On the other hand the beds were extremely comfortable and two different pillows are provided per guest: a feather one as well as another with a hollow silicone fibre filling. A nice touch that I appreciate but Marian doesn't care about much since she always brings her own.

When doing the check-in, we were asked if we had any preferences. Our only request was a quiet room and so we were given one on the top floor, room 902.

Speaking of reception, there's a nook on the ground floor that has a tap with both still and sparkling water, as well as a complimentary Nespresso machine, kettle and instant coffee and assorted tea bags for guests. A really nice touch that we used.

Another important feature that I almost forgot to mention was the huge TV (we eyeballed it at 42 inches and quite likely 4K), as well as a Bose Bluetooth speaker, in case you feel like listening to your own music. It wasn't just for show, it was legit and working, although it took me some time to figure out how to make it work.

One more thing that is worth mentioning is the excellent breakfast buffet at Thon hotels. I think it is one of the best ones we've tried: savoury stuff like scrambled and fried eggs, grilled veggies and so on; fresh fruit as well as chopped fruit such as pineapple and watermelon chunks, seedless grapes. A nice selection of breads that you had to slice yourself was also available. Food allergies were taken care of with gluten-free options. Needless to say, there was smoked salmon as well, which was very nicely arranged into small rolls.

Breakfast was the chance for us to try a typical Norwegian product, *Brunost* or 'brown cheese' made with milk, whey and/or cream. It had a delicious caramel-y taste and we liked it enough to grab a block at a local supermarket (Coop).

In sum, it was a great hotel to stay in Oslo, with all the comforts one may need and in a central location.

Apart from the last installment in this travel series, the only thing for us left to share with you would be what we bought during our stay.

Hotel Hampton by Hilton Warsaw / Varsovia

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

Today is time for another travel-related post, namely, to tell you about our accommodation in Warsaw.
We were unable to publish anything earlier due to unforeseen circumstances in the family. Thankfully this bad scare had a happy ending.

The Hampton by Hilton is very centrally located, a short distance from both Warsaw Central station and the Palace of Culture and Science.

The hotel is in a high-rise building and our room was almost at the top, on the 13th?? floor. Reception is located on the first floor and not on the ground level.
The breakfast room and bar area are located on the second floor.
On the subject of breakfast, the buffet was fairly well-stocked, with some fresh fruit (watermelon, apples and tangerines), cakes and pastry, as well as some savoury stuff. But the highlight of the breakfast hall was... a waffle maker.
Marian and I tried to behave and shared the waffles we made ourselves during our stay.

Talking about the room again, rooms are very spacious. Ours was the size of a Double Deluxe, with city views. They don't have a minibar, but the hotel kindly provided a couple of water bottles every day. Besides, there was complimentary tea and coffee with the customary kettle.

The bathroom had a spacious ensuite, storage space and a hairdryer that could be used in the sleeping area as well, since it was not fixed to the wall. A pleasant surprise was finding dispensers with hair conditioner and body milk. Most hotels have a 2-in-1 shampoo and gel and that's it.
It has a sliding door that when open, keeps the wardrobe closed.

Beds were really comfy -very tall, mind you, we almost needed to jump into bed- and room temperature was fine. It had a flat-screen TV, about 32 inches big, with channels from different countries. Incidentally, the brochure on the hotel amenities included a list of the different TV stations and the channel where you could find them. We have a similar thing at home and it is very convenient.

Have you ever stayed at a Hilton hotel? Or would you rather stay somewhere privately owned?

Leave us your thoughts on the comments section below.

Hoteles / Hotels: Expo Hotel Barcelona

Hola, chicas:

Hi ladies,

As usual after one of our travels, now is the time to tell you about our accommodation away in Barcelona.

Just like last year, we made the reservation through Booking but instead of using Beruby, we got there through Topcashback, as it had a much better cashback deal.

The Expo Hotel is located outside Sants station, which was great considering it was the station we arrived at after our 6-hour train ride. There's another hotel right in front of it, a taller building that is hard to miss. The Expo hotel is right behind it.

At reception we handed in our reservation, gave our details and presented the credit card the booking was pre-paid with. No problems whatsoever. The receptionist gave us the choice of having a room in the upper or lower floors and we decided in favour of an upper-level room, in case there was noise from the traffic below. No worries there, as we couldn't hear anything. The upside of a room in the upper floors was we got better views. See the sights in the pictures? We could see part of the old bullfighting ring now turned Shopping Mall - Arenas and Montjuic in the distance.

As you can see in the pics, our room, 815 was really spacious, with nice modern décor.
Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that the maids were really quiet, unlike in other hotels where you're woken up by slamming doors and vaccuums on full blast.
It had a decent closet with an in-built safe, a desk, tea-making facilities and a minibar we were unable to open as it had a key.

Anyway, we couldn't really find any supermarkets in Barcelona. They were all small, independent corner shops, mostly run by Chinese families. Don't get me wrong, but I don't really trust those places to respect such things as cold chain and best by dates are respected in such places.

Our booking included breakfast, served on the 3rd floor, which was also the hotel's restaurant.
The hotel also boasts a rooftop pool and solarium we could enjoy during our stay, as we mentioned in part One of this travel guide series.

Well, this was our own review about the Expo Hotel Barcelona, where we stayed during our trip to Barcelona.
We hope you find it useful.
See you around.

Hoteles / Hotels: Holiday Inn Express Earls Court - Londres / London

Hola, chicas:

Hi ladies,

You have no idea how much I'd been meaning to write this post, but procrastinating is never a blogger's friend. And at this rate, you'll continue reading about our summer holidays well into Christmas.

Unlike what we usually do, this time we took the plunge and booked online. We spent a long while compiling a list with our favourite hotels, a list that we then lost, so we had to start from scratch.

Searching for accommodation in London is no easy feat. You always hesitate between finding a really small room but centrally located or looking for something away from the hustle in the city that is roomier. Reading hotel reviews from guests has its risks, as the same hotel can get excellent reviews from some people, while horrible ones from others and you're left at a loss.

In the end, we chickened out -or played it safe- and booked somewhere backed by a hotel chain. Our chosen accommodation was the Holiday Inn Express Earls Court. Don't be misleaded by its name, as the closest underground station is NOT Earls Court.

Our reservation through Booking for 2 people in a double room for 7 nights cost 997 pounds. This time, we did benefit from the plunge in the sterling pound value after the Brexit.

Our arrival was somewhat complicated. Our map did not cover that area, we were not given good directions which combined lead to our late arrival at the hotel. Strangely enough, Marox's first instinct was to turn left when leaving the West Brompton station. She spotted another hotel building and even if it wasn't the Holiday Inn Express one we were looking for, it was located in the same direction.

Upon arriving, Gennaro and Tina helped us checking in at reception. Gennaro was kind enough to talk to our parents, worried about their unanswered whatsapp messages. Hey, we were too busy locating the hotel and dragging our suitcases!!
Our parents don't speak English, so imagine their relief when Tina put them through to Gennaro, who did speak some Spanish.

Our room, 419 was very nice. It was quiet, clean and big enough to move around even with our suitcases on the floor. We were surprised to see the hairdryer was indeed powerful: it looked like your regular hairdryer attached to the wall. It even had a diffuser, unheard of in the hotels we've stayed in so far. Curly haired girls do exist, thank you very much.

The cleanliness did not end in the room itself, the kettle was spotless enough for us to use several times. The one provided in most hotels is just filthy.
Sadly, rooms do not have a minibar, so we tried to buy our dinners every day or non-perishable items. A shame their rooms don't have a mini fridge.

Our second bit of criticism was regarding the matresses. They were rock hard, so hard that Marian couldn't sleep a wink the first night. The following morning we asked Tina whether all rooms had the same matresses and unfortunately they all did, so she suggested telling the maids to give us an extra duvet to put on top of the matress to make it a little bit more comfortable.
We appreciated her trying to find a solution and her following up on the matter to make sure we were given that extra duvet for that purpose.

As for the bathroom, the layout of the door was simply genius. You see, they had a doorframe at the bathroom entrance and another one where the toilet seat was located to give more privacy to the person using it or if those sharing a room are not that... close.

I know this may sound silly but I thought they're having given the room layout some thought when planning the space was worthy of praise.

Our reservation came with breakfast included. The hotel does not have a restaurant, so you'll have to eat out in the area or grab something on the way to the hotel, which is what we did every day except for the first.

We got a couple of takeaway crêpes from the crêperie opposite the hotel.

The breakfast room was equipped with juice-dispensing machines, toasters and hot milk. Fresh fruit, and assortment of teas and bread were also available. I was pleasantly surprised to see vegan options like veggie sausages, which were delicious, btw.
I missed having cold meat or cheese, though.
See the pics for an idea of what our breakfasts were like.

Well, that was all regarding our accommodation. If you've been to London, let us know where you stayed in the comments below. Do you book flights and hotels online?

Hoteles / Hotels: Elite Palace Stockholm (II)

¡Hola a todas!

Hi everyone!

The truth is I've been meaning to write this post for ages, well, since the summer but out of boredom, lack of time, etc, it's remained in my 'to write'- list.

As you probably remember, we chose the same travel destination for our holidays, Stockholm, as well as the same hotel for our stay, the Elite Palace hotel located in the residential Vasastan area.

We stayed in two different rooms this time. Our reservation was for a Double Deluxe room again (we can't remember the room number) and the room we were given was considerably smaller than last year's. We suspected that we'd been given a standard one by mistake, due to the fact that both towelling robes and safe were missing for some reason.

The thing is that all rooms in the hotel claim to have a safe, but upon asking at reception we were told that there were a few older rooms that did not have one. Since there were no available rooms with a deposit box that night, we decided to try again in the morning, as the receptionist suggested. In the mean time, we could use the reception safe if we wanted to.

The following morning after breakfast we asked again and were told there was one indeed and that we could take a look at the room beforehand. We took it without even looking and were gladly rewarded with a room, 930, that was considerably roomier and had both bath robes and deposit box.

One more detail we'd like to add is that when we went back to the hotel after the concert *here*, we asked the receptionist how we could turn on the heating in the room and they offered to bring us a portable oil radiator so we could get warm as soon as possible. It was very thoughtful of them, don't you think?

We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel, as long as you find a good deal. Another alternative would be the Nordic C Hotel by TCentralen, in a much more central location. If you're lucky enough to find a good deal, a night there can be €50, as was the case for the fans from Barcelona we met at the concert *here*. It's fairly new and although the rooms are not as spacious as the Deluxe ones you have at the Elite Palace, it's a great choice too.

Hotel Elite Palace - Estocolmo / Stockholm

¡Hola chicas!

Hi ladies!

As customary in this blog after one of our trips, it's time for some travel-related posts. Today's post will be about our chosen accommodation in Stockholm, one of the Elite hotels in town.

The Elite Palace hotel is a cosmopolitan, modern establishment, within easy access to public transport that will take you to the city centre in no time. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood, Vasastad.
Initially our local travel agency had given us a quote for a Twin Superior room at this hotel -which can have windows or no windows at all- but by the time we made the booking formal the price of the room had significantly gone down, to the point that we were able to upgrade to a Deluxe and still save some euros. That way we made sure our room would definitely have a window, even if those overlooked an inner courtyard as was the case here.

The nearest underground (Tunnelbana in Swedish) is Sankt Eriksplan. From the station, the hotel is about 5 minutes up S:t Eriksgatan.

Right next to the hotel there's a gastropub, The Bishops Arms that delivers your order to your room if you wish. It seemed pleasant enough, though we never tried it in the end.
A couple of meters further up the street you have a Lidl supermarket that I believe is open until 9pm.

Upon arrival, we checked in fairly quick. We were asked for our credit card - I suppose in order to cover any minibar charges-. I wasn't too happy about that, though I understand it's probably hotel regulations and there's nothing you can do about it. The staff is very attentive, though and will be ready to help you with directions and so on.

Our only criticism refers to the fact that during our stay several elevators/ lifts were out of service. As a few of them were not in use, the demand to use the remaining ones was hard to meet at certain times, so we got tired of waiting and used the stairs instead. While the lifts were being serviced, the staff noticed more and more guests were using the stairs and hung some indications to find them.

How do you like our gigantic room?

Needless to say it was roomy and well equipped. The room was 827, one of their Double Deluxe ones.
Beds were bigger than expected and quite comfortable. They consisted on what appeared to be a spring mattress with a mat on top. The pillows seemed like feather ones to us. Marox found the mattress a bit too soft for her liking, but slept more than fine every night all the same.

The hotel has complimentary Wifi for guests that has good reception all over the building. In order to use it, you have to select 'EliteWifi' on your device and then open your browser. By default, it will have the hotel's website, where you will log in with your e-mail address. A few seconds later, you'll have Internet access on your device.

Back to the subject of the hotel room, we were a bit surprised to find fitted carpets, since the promotional pictures all featured rooms with laminate flooring.
Fitted carpets are what you generally can expect from international hotels, but you see, here in Spain we're not too keen on those -i.e. gross, cough-, so we had been looking forward to having something different for a change.
Although the rooms do not have an airconditioning unit in itself, there seemed to be some kind of ventilation with outlets located... behind the headboards, or so it seemed.

The minibar -stocked with some drinks and snacks- was inside the closet, under the safe. We used both to keep some of our stuff and had no issues whatsoever.

Our booking included breakfast, so since you've seen our room why not mention breakfast?

The buffet-style breakfast had plenty of stuff to choose from: all sorts of bread, cereals, homemade pastries and assorted fruit salads, as you can see in the picture.
Since we were in Scandinavia, we did as the locals do and had some smoked salmon for breakfast. It was delicious.
The pic shows what our breakfasts at the Elite Palace hotel were like. You can safely say we were ready to face the day ahead after this!

Hotel: Jury's Inn Liverpool

¡Hola!

Hi,
As customary for this blog, right after a trip we like to write a few posts about our experience there. This time we'd like to tell you our two cents about our accommodation while in Liverpool.

The Jury's Inn is a modern hotel, located in a very pleasant area, the Albert Dock. Most of the city's tourist spots are a short distance from it, a mere 10-minute walk.
It is easy to find, even at night, as the Ferris wheel and the Echo Arena are located right outside the hotel.

The Jury's Inn Liverpool has 310 rooms. The rooms are very spacious and have a King size bed and a single one. Both the beds and the pillows provided are extremely comfortable (finding good pillows in hotels is rare). You'll appreciate this fact if you've spent the day out doing sightseeing either in Liverpool or visiting the region.
The hotel is favoured by groups of friends celebrating a birthday or a hen/stag party. Don't let that fact put you off choosing this hotel, as it is very quiet.
I have a criticism to make, as the Wifi is not free (well, you can use it for an hour, by requesting a ticket at the reception desk, with coverage only in that floor). I seem to recall they charged 5 pounds per hour, 10 per day. Needless to say, we found another way to have Internet access, which we'll tell you about soon.

We had a group booking, including room and breakfast. The hotel has two entrances, one located in the underground floor -the one you'll use if you get there by car or bus- and another one in the ground floor. The breakfast room is located right next to the reception area, on the ground floor.

The breakfast provided is buffet-style and it was actually one of the most complete we've ever seen, with fresh and prepared fruit, coffee, juices and milk, a wide range of cereals, savoury dishes, scones and croissants, assorted yoghourts and jams, they even had peanut butter. If you were still hungry after breakfast, it won't be due to lack of variety.
The hotel has a cafeteria and a restaurant, though we didn't use any of those.
In addition, there's a pizza place right outside the hotel.
Well, now it's time to tell you a bit more about the room. We were given room 540 for our stay at the Jury's Inn, which offered stunning views to the Ferris wheel, as you can see in the pictures.

The room is furnished with two beds, a large-sized one and a single, supercomfy, as we mentioned earlier in this post. The rooms are equipped with a good-sized flatscreen TV and an electric kettle to prepare a cup of tea or coffee anytime -we're in the UK, after all.
The only cons were the lack of a mini fridge, which should be a must in a good quality hotel such as this. In the bathroom, the water pressure was just average, though it was enough. In addition, the shower is equipped with a British-style showerhead, meaning it isn't handheld, which is my preferred kind.
The bathroom had several soap dispensers and the soap provided was very pleasant to use -it smelled great and looked high-end.

The room cleaning was adequate, getting our towels changed when necessary and restocking other items as needed too. Both the bathroom and room looked clean enough.

Hotel Cervantes Paris

¡Hola!

Hi!

In this post, we'd like to talk about the hotel we chose to stay in Paris, the *Cervantes Hotel*, located in the 8th district of the French capital, more precisely at number 19 of Rue de Berne.

The Cervantes Hotel is a 3-star hotel that has been completely renovated. Our room was a Standard Double, with a large bed. The hotel offers another type of double rooms, the Premium ones which are recommended for people staying longer or guests coming from the other side of the Atlantic.

The room strongly reminded us of one of those Ikea 'inspiration spaces' that are close to the sort of housing most people can afford.
We were given Room 54. Going round the footboard was tricky as the passageway was quite narrow, but all the furniture has been chosen to serve a dual purpose: the headboard incorporates two nooks that work as nightstands, while the top part provides a makeshift shelving space.

The room has a 3-piece ensuite, where more storage space was most certainly wanted. The lack of shelves had us racking our brains to organize our toiletries.

As far as the reception staff is concerned, they were all very kind and helpful. When checking in, we discovered the male receptionist who took care of our booking was from Spain. He kindly gave us a very helpful tip: in order to have power supply in the room when leaving it, he suggested that we used a club card or something similar, which we did.

Back on the topic of the room, the bed was extremely comfortable. I cannot say the same about the pillows, on the average side, but I managed with them all the same. Since Marian always brings her own (a very lightweight one from LIDL that she can roll and carry in her suitcase), marox can use as many as she likes.
The room is equipped with a small flat-screen TV with a DVD player, with international channels (British, American and the Spanish TVE).

When doing our booking, we noted the fact that the room had a minibar with enough room to keep some food in it. It was a welcome addition, since our booking was for just the room. The 'room and breakfast' option provided by our travel agent's implied an extra cost of €30 per person and day, amounting to a total of €300 in our booking. That seemed a total rip-off. Strangely enough, upon checking in at the hotel, we were told we could have breakfast there everyday for €12 each.
In the end, we chose an even cheaper option: buying some breakfast and dinner at the DIA supermarket at the end of the street.

But the most convenient hotel feature was its free WIFI Internet access. The hotel has several Wifi signal repeaters throughout the building to make sure all rooms have readily access to the Internet. All you have to do is choose on your device the network providing the best signal and log into it.
Thanks to their free Wifi access we could stay in touch and this time we did not get to buy a prepaid SIM card like we did in Dublin.
Having a smartphone does have its perks, I can see that now.
