Libros / Books: 'The Flowers of War' by Geling Yan

I'm back after our short holiday break with a new book review, in this case with my latest e-read in English.

This Chinese novel was so popular that a film version was made, starring Christian Bale and was China's entry for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. Haven't seen the film, though I don't rule out watching it some day. Who knows.

The present book can also be found in English under the tittle 'The 13 Flowers of Nanjing'.

Sinopsis:

Excerpt:

1937, Nanjing: The Japanese army has violently made its way into the Chinese capital, sparing neither blood nor fire. The war has trapped Shujuan along with another 12 young female students in the attic of St. Mary Magdalene Church, under the watchful care of Father Engelmann. Though something is about to rock their world, stronger than the sound of gunfire. When the mysterious seductress Zhao Yumo arrives at the church, heading a group of prostitutes seeking refuge, both girls and clergymen have to face their own dilemma: Where is Justice? In what way are they different from these women? Is there any escape from cruelty?
This is a poignant tale of fear and violence, as well as love and indomitable passions, friendship and compassion, turned into the biggest film production in Chinese history by Zhang Yimou.

The book is inspired by historical events I ignored: i.e., the capture of the Chinese capital, during which thousands of mass crimes against humanity both against POWs and civilians, women being the victims of many of those abuses.
Even now, the events are still a source of political disputes between the countries.

Shujuan, one of the young female students at the church is the character chosen by the author to guide us through these abominable events. She's not a girl anymore and we could say she's mad at the world: at herself, because she hates the changes her body is going through; at her parents for being abroad and not being in time to rescue her from the hell the country is living and at some of her mates. The thing she abhors above all is actually having to share her forced captivity with a group of prostitutes from a nearby brothel who've taken refuge at the church compound.

The author indeed offers a good sketch of Shujuan's nature, though unfortunately the same cannot be said about other important characters in the story. You get the impression that she found the task too tiring and simply didn't bother, which is a pity, because she had ample characters to exploit, so to speak, for the sake of the story.

The ending was quite sudden as well, though that is perfectly understandable, given the nature of the fact-paced tragedy she's relating.

In short, this is a good read, telling a very tragic story based on a real event, though I get the feeling the author merely 'did her due' at times when writing it. Or at least, that's the way I felt about it.
Have you read any other novels by this author? Or perhaps from a different Asian novelist? Don't be shy and leave your suggestions in the comments section below.

Today I'm back with a mani where I used for the first time the Nails Inc set that I bought at TK Maxx in Dublin's St. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. It's an Outlet store, that reminded us a lot to the El Corte Inglés Outlet that we have back home, in Zamora.
I don't usually buy posh brands, but doing the math each polish was €5 and all the colours in the set were really pretty, so I thought I could splurge a little for a change.

Day 1: At night, I apply one coat of my Basic from Schlecker basecoat, followed by one of this polish. Application is a dream, the lacquer gives you a great coverage with just one coat and the consistency is neither too liquidy nor too thick. It seemed to apply all by itself. I topped it with a coat of Seche Vite, which is becoming harder to use everytime as there is little left.

Day 3: I've had chips in both sides of several nails in my right hand and there are beginning to appear on my left. Wearwise, I wished this had lasted a little longer. Perhaps with a different basecoat lasting time would be better.

Do you often buy polishes from high-end brands? I'm afraid I kind of suffer from the 'Essence syndrome' cause it pains me to pay more than I should for a certain product.

UDLS/NOTW: "Silvery lilac" (324) - Barry M.

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

I'm back with a new mani. This time, I've borrowed this Barry M polish from Marox that she got in Dublin.
So, if I help her, it will be easier for us to show you all the polishes we bought there, lol.

This is a polish I'd describe as duochrome: lilac and light green, with silver reflections (I don't know whether it is glitter or not). Application is very good. The brush glides on easily, so you won't have a big daub of polish on your whole finger (which happens to me quite often).

For this mani, I applied a coat of Nail Sealer from Essence, and then two thin coats of this polish, for a better coverage.
After that, I applied Seche Vite, which gives nails extra shine.

The pics you're seeing were taken the second day.

On day 3 I washed my hair (which as you know usually ruins all my manis), but this time it held out quite well; just a tiny chipping of my right index.
But on the fourth day the polish began to peel. I almost didn't need nailpolish remover, but I did use it to remove the traces.

There are only a few 'Irish' polishes left to show you.

Libros / Books: 'Water for Elephants' by Sara Gruen

Today's post is a book review to introduce my latest read in English. I actually bought the printed version in Tallinn though I misplaced it and ended up reading it in my E-Reader. And as if by magic (or one of Murphy's Laws), that is when the book turned up again.

I gather most of you know this book thanks to the *movie* of the same title starring the vampirical Robert Pattinson. I did know about the film, but haven't seen it as yet, though I might watch it someday.

Excerpt:

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate travelling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

The book is easy enough to read -though some footnotes providing translation for the Polish phrases interspersed throughout the novel wouldn't have hurt either. A nice read to dig into and escape the dreary weather outside. The author carried out a thorough research of circus life during the 1930's, so she did her homework in that respect, apparently. However, she did not provide enough psychological depth to some key characters in the story like Marlena. The young Jacob appears to be quite naïve and a bit 'green' in life, so to speak. The same applies to his professional fortitude, as he seemed to ignore what his job could sometimes entail. Just like a doctor, he has to realize he may not be able to save all his patients.

The fate of both Young Jacob and Old Jacob was quite surprising, though I found the latter's to be quite far-fetched, to put it midly. It did provide the round, happy ending the author seemed to have in mind for her novel.

I confess I am intrigued to see for myself how well the story translated into the big screen, namely to see whether it succeeds or fails to overcome some of the flaws in the novel.
I remember my utter disappointment when I read 'The English Patient' by Michael Oondatje many years ago. I felt the film was quite superior to the original novel, an oddity. It could be a case of "too high expectations", I guess.

Hazlo tú / DIY: Butaca de sosa a fabulosa - From drab to fab armchair.

Hi again,

When we uploaded *this* post, we told you that we were working on a decor/DIY project, a more complex one that would require some professional input.
Well, we've recently finished that project and are now ready to proudly share it with you.

When we went to Portugal in the summer to order the new furniture for my living-room, I was drooling over a gorgeous piece I saw through a shop window The reason? They had a gorgeous armchair on display, very similar to *this one*. They asked me €550 for it, but considering it was upholstered with fabric imitating patchwork, I thought it was too pricey for me.
At this store you can find them upholstered in real patchwork, but they're much more expensive, as you will see if you click on the link.

But it was too late. I was already head over heels in love with that armchair, so I had to own a more affordable alternative.
As my mother and Marox are really good at finding bargains, they went to a second-hand furniture store (the same place where they found the headboards we already showed you), and came back with this armchair they got for €110 after some bargaining.

I know you're very eager to see the end result, so let's move on to the step-by-step.

First of all, remove the old fabric from the armchair.
After that, sand the entire surface with an electric sander, except for the arms and curved areas, where we'll use a sanding sponge for a neater job.
Then we need to repair all damaged areas with some woodfiller, and let it dry for 24 hours. Next we have to sand those parts again to remove any excess filler.

We continue by applying one coat of worm-fighting primer to protect the wood, and let it dry for 24 or 48 hours.
Now take a paintbrush for wood, and apply one coat of satin plastic paint (it'll be beautiful). Let it dry for one or two days.
If you want the grain to be seen, you can sand wherever you want with a sanding sponge. If not, then apply the second coat of paint and let dry for one or two days.
Now apply a coat of satin varnish, to protect the paint.

Tip: Whenever possible, try to use water-based products, this way the smell will be softer and your brushes will be easier to clean too.

This part of the project was done by both my parents and sister. I was going to be in charge of the next stage myself: sewing.

I had never done patchwork in my entire life, but I consider myself self-taught at this sort of thing. The Internet is an excellent tool for this, so I watched many videos on YT and read some blogs about it to get the basics right. As ready as I could ever be, I got on with it.
My mother and I went to some stores and street markets to 'hunt down' some fabric for the upholstery.

Instead of making a gigantic fabric made of cloth pieces sewn together, I thought it would be wiser to make smaller pieces, using the different pieces we took out before as a pattern. Having more manageable pieces sounded easier.
I made them a bit larger than needed, so as not to make the upholsterer's job any more difficult.
I cut my pieces of fabric in different sizes (big, small, wide, narrow) and shapes: rectangular, square (or almost).
To prevent them from fraying, I serged them with my beloved overlock machine from Lidl. Marox also helped me with this step, finishing the loop-stitches by hand.
I then arranged the pieces to my liking, and I sewed them together with my sewing machine.

Once all the pieces are finished, it's time for part three of this project, carried out by the upholsterer.
He told me that he had never upholstered anything with patchworked fabric, so he was curious to try. He said it very interesting for him, but also very laborious. Fortunately he didn't charge us more and kept the price he'd originally given us in his estimate, €100.

We paid about €30 for the paint. Considering the estimated total price of the fabric was about €50, the average price of the whole project has been about €290. A few of the scraps were quite big, so we'll see if I can do something else with them too.

After such a hard work, here is the finished product. What do you think? Do you like it?

Did you miss us? Here we are again.

Today I want to show you a polish from one of the many brands that are not available here in Spain (or in Europe, for that matter), Hard Candy. In our last *swap* with the lovely Iris she sent us two minis from said brand which were sitting in our untrieds.

Day 1: At night, I apply a coat of Nail Envy and when dry, two of this. Though coverage is good, when I try to get an even layer, I inevitably drag part of the polish, so two coats would be best. I topped it all with one coat of Essence's topcoat from their BTGN line.
This polish from Hard Candy reminds me a lot of *Halley's Comet* from the Cosmic FX collection by Orly ('Space Cadet' came out in the very same collection and I seem to recall Hard Candy had a dupe for it called 'Beetle').

Day 2: In the morning, I try for the first time the plates in the *BIC kit* with not very satisfying results. I tried different images, but they just don't transfer crisply enough onto the stamper. I used Essence special silver polish and even tried Catrice's Goldfinger for this purpose but it didn't give me a neat image either. The designs seem to be etched properly in the BIC plates, but I don't know if it's the rounded brim of the plate or what, but we had a hard time stamping with these plates and the designs are not as crisp as when using Essence plates. I apply one coat of the BTGN in some of the nails I stamped over. At night, the polish in my right thumb begins to chip, so I'm not all quite sure if I can really vouch for this in terms of wear.

Day 3: There are major chips by lunchtime, both in my right thumb and middle finger as well as some smaller ones in other nails, so I had to take this off on Day 3.

Ever had problems like this when stamping? Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments below.

Compras varias acumuladas / Sundry Haul

¡Hola, chicas!

Hi girls,

Here we are again, this time with a new post to share with you our latest make-up haul. I don't know why we always say that we're not going to anything ever again. A lesson to learn, never say never.

Seizing a special offer at Sephora, applicable to everything you could put in a small paper bag they gave you, we bought these reusable wipes for removing makeup (one for each), and a nail polish they had on offer at €1 for Marian. The shade is called 'Dinner for 2' and it swatched great, needing only one coat to be fully opaque.
I think the wipes were €6 each (before the discount).

We took the wipes to Dublin with us (tourism and makeup can really get on well), and we had a pleasant surprise with them.
To the extent that we're seriously considering not buying disposable makeup remover wipes again. We seem to recall Kanebo used to have a similar product, though it was a lot more expensive. You can read more about the Kanebo Sponge Chief *here* and *here*.

All the stuff you're about to see now are from Essence, but bought in different days.

A few days ago, Marox went to our local Essence supplier, and came back home with these polishes from the new Colour&Go range. As you already know, she only bought one in Dublin, but kept an eye on some more, so here they are.

She bought for her the 'Walk on the wild side' one, in a dark green shade with light green reflections.

And then, she bought the 'Oh my glitter' one for me (How cute is she!). It's a polish in a vibrant purple shade with blue and pink reflections.

And a few days later, we both went back to the store, and I couldn't resist bringing home with me a few things from the current LE 'Wild Craft', now on sale.

I bought the polish called 'Mystic lilac', although I wouldn't describe the colour as lilac, but a mix between a light burgundy and a taupe shade.
But if you have a better description for it, please feel free to tell us.

I also bought two of the three eyeshadows from this LE:  'Mystic lilac', in a metallic shimmery burgundy shade, and 'Out of the forest', in an old gold/bronze shade with multicolour reflections.

Besides its shade, I loved the texture of these eyeshadows: very silky and not crumbly or chalky  at all.

This has been all for now. As we've decided not to make promises that we cannot keep, you'll see another post of our latest purchases very soon.
See you!
