Aquí os traigo una nueva reseña literaria. Que yo sepa, el libro aún no ha sido publicado en castellano (el título sería un juego de palabras entre 'el padrino de boda' y 'el mejor hombre'). Se trata de una novela romántica de una autora en auge, la norteamericana Kristan Higgins, dos veces ganadora del premio RITA de novela romántica.
Últimamente tengo el Ebook un poco abandonado y he descargado unos cuantos libros en el ordenador y en el iPad, como éste del que quiero hablaros hoy.
Por lo visto, es el primero de una serie dedicada a los ficticios viñedos familiares, Blue Heron, situados en la localidad inventada de Manningsport.

Resumen

A veces el hombre ideal para tí es quien menos te esperas...
Faith Holland dejó su ciudad natal después de que la plantaran en el altar. Ahora que es un poco más mayor y más sabia, está preparada para regresar a los viñedos de Blue Heron, propiedad de su familia, para hacerle frente a los fantasmas de su pasado y disfrutar de un buen tinto. Además, hay unas vistas fantásticas por allí... como Levi Cooper, el jefe de la policía local - y mejor amigo del que fuera su prometido. Hay muchas cosas de Levi en las que nunca reparó, no sólo en sus profundos ojos verdes. La única pega es que le cuesta olvidar que fue él quien ayudó a arruinar su boda hace años.
Si logra dejar a un lado a su alocada familia y ver el lado positivo de las cosas, es posible que encuentre una razón para quedarse en Blue Heron y acabar ese paseo hacia el altar.

Es la primera novela de esta autora que leo y la verdad es que me ha parecido fantástica -si bien las reseñas de otras no me han atraído tanto. La protagonista, Faith, es una especie de Bridget Jones a la americana, la clase de persona de buen corazón a la que todo le sale al revés. El protagonista, Levi, es uno de esos tipos callados y secos que parecen no ser nada especial -pero que alegran la vista del personal, que le tira los tejos descaradamente sin importar su edad-, pero que descubres que tienen un corazón que no le cabe en el pecho y sí, un poco de mala leche también.

Los intercambios de puyas entre Faith y él son hilarantes. Se refieren el uno al otro como "Princesita Súperguay" y "el del palo por el culo", para que os hagáis una idea. Ambos protagonizan momentos desternillantes: Faith, la escena conocida como el "problema de vestuario" al comienzo del libro y Levi el momento "rescate de la gallina", con el perro de Faith de testigo, como parte de una de sus tareas cotidianas como jefe de policía del pintoresco Manningsport.
En un segundo plano tenemos a Jeremy, ex-prometido de Faith y el yerno perfecto de no ser por un pequeño pero importante detalle y a Colleen, la mejor amiga de Faith que no puede evitar ser un poco picaflor, y por último a la familia de Faith - a cada cual más loco-.
En modo de narrador omnisciente, la autora nos va presentando el lado oculto de los personajes principales, ya que hay un porqué en el comportamiento de "niña perfecta" de Faith y en la dedicación de Levi a su familia y al pueblo.

Os recomiendo este libro sin dudarlo, seguro que os hará reír de lo lindo y disfrutar de un buen rato.
De las demás novelas de esta autora, me llama la atención la de "Tirando del anzuelo", publicado en España por HQN, con otra protagonista de las que parece que si monta un circo le crecen los enanos.

Here I am with a new book review, this time around with a book that to my knowledge has not been translated into Spanish yet. This chick-lit romantic comedy is written by a rising author, Kristan Higgins, two-time winner of the Romance Writers of America RITA award.
I haven't used my Ebook in a while and have taken to downloading books onto my laptop or IPad, as was the case with this read.
This book is the first in the Blue Heron Winery series, set in the fictional town of Manningsport.

Faith Holland left her hometown after being jilted at the altar. Now a little older and wiser, she's ready to return to the Blue Heron Winery, her family's vineyard, to confront the ghosts of her past, and maybe enjoy a glass of red. After all, there's some great scenery there….
Like Levi Cooper, the local police chief—and best friend of her former fiancé. There's a lot about Levi that Faith never noticed, and it's not just those deep green eyes. The only catch is she's having a hard time forgetting that he helped ruin her wedding all those years ago.
If she can find a minute amidst all her family drama to stop and smell the rosé, she just might find a reason to stay at Blue Heron, and finish that walk down the aisle.

This is my first Kristan Higgins novel and the truth is that I can't help but rave about it. I don't find other books in her catalogue as appealing, though. The main character in 'The Best Man' is Faith, whom I would describe as the American Bridget Jones, and is one of those characters with a good heart whose attempts to rebuild her lovelife go belly-up.  The male lead, Levi, is one of those silent types of few words who don't seem to be anything out of the ordinary but who are hot enough to have hordes of women lusting after and making passes at him, regardless of their age. He has a golden heart but has a wicked, dark sense of humor at the same time.

Faith and Levi's exchange of "pleasantries", i.e. barbed comments are hilarious. They refer to each other as 'Princess Supercute" and "the one with the brach up his arse", god bless them. Both will have some hilarious scenes up their sleeve: the 'wardrobe malfunction' episode in Faith's case and for Levi, when he rescues a chicken from Faith's dog TLC as part of his regular missions as Manningsport cop Chief.
In the background we meet Jeremy, Faith's former fiance and perfect son-in-law were it not for a small but important detail and characters like Colleen, Faith's best friend who can't help being a bit slutty and lastly, Faith's family, a crazy but adorable bunch.

Told by an all-knowing narrator, the writer reveals that there's a dark side in the lead characters that explains why Faith started acting as a goody-goody and why Levi is so devoted to his family and his duties as Manningsport (hottest) Chief of Police.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book, as it will no doubt make you laugh out loud and have a good time.
Out of Ms. Higgins' other novels, the one that caught my eye was 'Catch of the Day', featuring another accident-prone heroine you can't help but love.

Aquí vengo a enseñaros mi última manicura hasta ahora, adecuada también para los días festivos que se acercan.

Como siempre hago, os enseño a los tres protagonistas de esta manicura.



En primer lugar, utilicé el gel de calcio de Basic, después dos capas finas de este esmalte (que compré en nuestra segunda visita a Estocolmo, el pasado verano), y por último, el top coat de Poshé.

Este esmalte tiene un efecto duocromo.
Por una parte, el color se ve como sale en las fotos. Pero según cómo le dé la luz, se ve de un color como verdoso.
Además de esto, tiene unas pequeñas partículas multicolores que lo hacen especial.



Me llamó mucho la atención la anchura del pincel en relación al tamaño del bote.
Puedes cubrir toda la uña de una sola pasada.

Esta manicura me ha durado 5 días. La retiré tras desprenderse buena parte del esmalte del dedo índice de la mano derecha.
Hasta entonces, alguna señal de desgaste, pero nada importante.

Ahora tengo que pensar en la próxima manicura. Tengo aún varios esmaltes por estrenar, así que no sé cuál usaré primero.

Here I am again to show you my latest mani so far. It's blingy enough to be suitable for the upcoming festive days.

As I always do, here you can see the three main stars of this nail show, lol.

First of all, I used the calcium gel from Basic, and then, two thin coats of this polish (which I bought in our second visit to Stockholm, last summer), and the Poshé top coat to finish.



This polish has a duochrome effect.
On the one hand, it has the shade you can see in the pics, but then depending on how it catches the light, you can also see a greenish shade.
Besides, it has small multicolor particles that make this polish very special.

The fact that caught my attention the most was the width of the brush considering the bottle size. You can cover the whole nail with just one brushstroke.



This mani lasted a good 5 days on me. I removed it after a large chunk of polish on my right index finger nail came off. Before that, there were some small signs of wear, but nothing important.

Now it's time for me to think of what my next mani will be. I have some polishes on queue, waiting to be used, so I still don't know which one I'll be using first.

Hoteles / Hotels: Elite Palace Stockholm (II)

¡Hola a todas!

Lo cierto es que tenía pendiente de redactar esta entrada desde el verano, pero se ha ido quedando en el tintero, por falta de ganas, de tiempo, etc.

Como recordaréis, este verano repetimos destino turístico, Estocolmo, y repetimos hotel, el Elite Palace, situado en el residencial barrio de Vasastan.

En esta ocasión, nos alojamos en dos habitaciones diferentes. Nuestra reserva era para una habitación doble Deluxe. La habitación que nos asignaron al principio (ya no recordamos el número) era bastante más pequeña que la que nos tocó el año pasado.




Sospechábamos que nos habían dado una habitación estándar, por el hecho de que no teníamos albornoces ni caja fuerte. 

Lo cierto es que se supone que todas las habitaciones del hotel incluyen caja fuerte, pero al preguntar en recepción nos dijeron que hay alguna habitación más antigua que no tiene, y por lo visto ésta era una de ellas. Como no tenían habitaciones libres con caja fuerte ese día, decidimos volver a preguntar al día siguiente, tal y como nos sugirió la recepcionista. Mientras tanto, podíamos usar la caja fuerte de recepción.

Al día siguiente, después de desayunar, nos dijeron que sí que había una disponible y que podíamos verla si queríamos. La cogimos sin verla y salimos ganando con el cambio, puesto que nuestra nueva habitación, la 930 era mucho más espaciosa, similar a la del año pasado, con sus albornoces y cómo no, con su caja fuerte.

Como curiosidad, comentaros que el día del concierto *aquí* llegamos tan empapadas al hotel, que preguntamos cómo podíamos poner la calefacción, y automáticamente nos subieron un radiador portátil de aceite, para entrar en calor lo antes posible. Nos pareció todo un detalle.

Recomendamos este hotel sin dudarlo, si lo encontráis a buen precio. Otra alternativa es el hotel Nordic C junto a TCentralen, situado aún más céntrico y en el que si pilláis una buena oferta, os puede salir la estancia a 50€ la noche, como fue el caso de los amigos de Barcelona que conocimos en el concierto.
Es muy nuevo y aunque las habitaciones no son tan espaciosas como las Deluxe de este hotel, está francamente bien también.

The truth is I've been meaning to write this post for ages, well, since the summer but out of boredom, lack of time, etc, it's remained in my 'to write'- list.

As you probably remember, we chose the same travel destination for our holidays, Stockholm, as well as the same hotel for our stay, the Elite Palace hotel located in the residential Vasastan area.

We stayed in two different rooms this time. Our reservation was for a Double Deluxe room again (we can't remember the room number) and the room we were given was considerably smaller than last year's. We suspected that we'd been given a standard one by mistake, due to the fact that both towelling robes and safe were missing for some reason.



The thing is that all rooms in the hotel claim to have a safe, but upon asking at reception we were told that there were a few older rooms that did not have one. Since there were no available rooms with a deposit box that night, we decided to try again in the morning, as the receptionist suggested. In the mean time, we could use the reception safe if we wanted to.



The following morning after breakfast we asked again and were told there was one indeed and that we could take a look at the room beforehand. We took it without even looking and were gladly rewarded with a room, 930, that was considerably roomier and had both bath robes and deposit box.

One more detail we'd like to add is that when we went back to the hotel after the concert *here*, we asked the receptionist how we could turn on the heating in the room and they offered to bring us a portable oil radiator so we could get warm as soon as possible. It was very thoughtful of them, don't you think?

We wholeheartedly recommend this hotel, as long as you find a good deal. Another alternative would be the Nordic C Hotel by TCentralen, in a much more central location. If you're lucky enough to find a good deal, a night there can be €50, as was the case for the fans from Barcelona we met at the concert *here*. It's fairly new and although the rooms are not as spacious as the Deluxe ones you have at the Elite Palace, it's a great choice too.

¿Qué tal habéis pasado el puente?
Esperamos que bien.
En cuanto a nosotras, Marian hacía mucho que no sabía lo que era librar un puente entero, y a Marox le parece mentira llevar tantos días seguidos sin ir a trabajar.

Aquí venimos con una nueva reseña de los productos que hemos terminado últimamente.

1 - Desodorante piedra de alumbre de Ebay: (marox).  Hemos comprado estos desodorantes varias veces, a vendedores de Tailandia. Nos gustan más que los que se venden en España (como el de Mercadona, por ejemplo), aunque de momento no repetiremos. Como véis, todavía quedaba un trozo, pero se desprendió de la base y lo restante presentaba una superficie irregular que puede cortar.
Veo que ahora mismo ronda los 4.99 dólares.
Ahora mismo estamos usando desodorantes naturales de iHerb y Vitacost. Ésta última además suele tener precios más baratos y da reembolso con Ebates y Topcashback.
Si pedís con cierta frecuencia a webs americanas, echadles un vistazo a estas páginas.



2 - Espuma para pelo rizado de L'Oreal: (marox) Ni sé si se sigue vendiendo. La tenía muerta de risa en el armarito del baño, pero llevo una temporada en la que me he propuesto acabar productos que tengo a medias.
Cuando inicialmente la compré, recuerdo que me gustaba porque no apelmazaba el pelo.
Ahora mismo, me gustan más productos como la mousse de Deliplus, que además tiene una composición bastante aceptable, así como inventos como el gel de linaza (que por falta de tiempo no he vuelto a hacer).

3 - Champú Bubbly "Gran Suave" (Marian).
Este producto ya lo habéis visto más veces en esta sección, pero es que no me canso de él.
Me encanta. Sólo espero que no cierre la tienda, y poder seguir comprándolo.



4 - Espuma de Baño 'Zensation' de Rituals (marox): Creo que fue el primer obsequio de Rituals que vino con la Glamour. Contiene leche de arroz y flor de cerezo. Es agradable de usar, aunque al principio sale disparada sin control. Es una buena incorporación a las potiduchas, sobre todo cuando nos apetece mimarnos un pelín. No siento que el olor perdure en el cuerpo, como sí pasa con muchos productos de TBS.
Aprovecho las promociones de Glamour para probar la marca, aunque no creo que la comprara de no ser así.
En tienda tiene un precio de 8€, según tengo entendido.

5 - Aceite desmaquillante Belle, de Eroski (Marian).
Me encanta cómo retira el maquillaje, y aunque tiene una leve y agradable fragancia, no resulta molesta en absoluto (al menos a mí).

Bueno, pues esto ha sido todo por ahora.

As for ourselves, it had been a while since Marian had a whole bank holiday weekend off, and Marox still can't believe not having to go to work for so many days in a row.

Here we are with a new Empties post, ready to share with you what we've used up recently.

1 - Crystal deodorant from Ebay: (marox) We've purchased several of these throughout the years, from Thai sellers. We like them better than the ones sold locally (i.e. the one from Mercadona supermarkets), although we won't repurchase for now. As you see, there's still some left, but the remaining fragment came apart from the the base and has an uneven surface that can be sharp enough to cut.

I can see that similar ones are now selling for $4.99. We're currently using other natural deodorants purchased at iHerb or Vitacost. The latter has better deals and offers cashback through Ebates and Topcashback. If you place orders on a regular basis to American sites, check out those two links.

2 - Wet curls mousse for curly hair, L'Oreal: (marox) I don't even know if you can still find this. It was gathering dust in my bathroom cabinet and I'm currently on a 'use-up' policy, trying to dispose of products that are halfway used.
When I first bought it I liked it because my hair didn't feel stiff to the touch. I have now turned to different styling products such as the Deliplus mousse from a Spanish supermarket and flaxseed gel -that I haven't done in a while due to lack of time).



3 - 'Big Softie' Shampoo Bar, Bubbly Bodyline (Marian).
You've seen this product before on previous 'Empties' posts, but the thing is that I never get tired of it. I just hope the store doesn't close down, so I can repurchase it again and again.

4 - Rituals 'Zensation' Shower Foam, marox: This was the first Rituals freebie that Glamour magazine Spain included. This one contains Rice Milk and Cherry Blossom. The dispenser is like out of control at first, though it's a good addition to showers, esp. when we feel the need of pampering a bit.
I don't feel the scent lasts on my skin, as it happens with most products from TBS.
I'll jump at magazine freebies to try the brand, though I don't think I would buy them otherwise. At the store this is priced at €8, I believe.



5 - Belle by Eroski supermarkets Makeup Remover Oil (Marian).
I love the way it removes make-up, and even though it has a subtle scent, it's nice and not unpleasant in any way (at least for me).

UDLS / NOTW: L'Oreal #854 ' Golden Coquillage'

Hola a todas:

¡Cuánto tiempo sin traeros una manicura!, ¿verdad? Lo cierto es que este curso estoy trabajando por primera vez a jornada completa, así que si de normal ya me costaba sentarme a escribir un rato, pues ahora lo llevo peor.

En fin, que me gustaría enseñaros uno de los esmaltes que me traje de nuestra segunda visita a Estocolmo. Lo compramos rebajado en Åhlens, uno de los más importantes grandes almacenes de la ciudad.

Día 1: Tras aplicar una capa de mi base de confianza, apliqué dos capas finitas de este esmalte. El pincel es anchito, como los de Catrice y reparte el color muy bien. Dejé que secara un par de minutos antes de dar el topcoat, el de la gama BTGN -igual que la base-.

Día 5: Me lo quitaré mañana, porque las uñas de la mano derecha están ya bastante perjudicadas. Eso sí, lo bueno de un tono como éste es que pasan desapercibidas. Creo que a nadie le gusta esa sensación de esmalte descuidado y que encima sea evidente.

Encantada con la duración del esmalte, que aguantó como un campeón que me lavara el pelo, cosa que normalmente suele causar estragos en mis manicuras.

¿Habéis probado alguno de estos nuevos esmaltes de L'Oreal? Si los pilláis a buen precio, no lo dudéis.

It's been a long while since I last shared a mani with you, hasn't it? Here's the thing: this year I'm working full time for the first time and if I struggled before to find the time to write something for the blog, it's even harder now.

Anyway, I'd like to show you one of the polishes I brought home from our second visit to Stockholm. We found it on a clearance plexiglas drawer at Åhlens, one of Stockholm's top department stores.

Day 1: After applying a coat of my trusted basecoat, I did two thin ones of this polish. The brush is wide and reminded me of those from Catrice and does a really good job at evenly spreading the colour. I let the polish dry for a few minutes before adding my topcoat - the Essence BTGN one - from the same line as my base.

Day 5: I'll take it off tomorrow, because the lacquer is quite chipped on my right hand. However, since this is one of those barely-there shades, it's hardly noticeable from a distance. Nobody likes people to notice how badly chipped your nail polish is, right?

I'm overly pleased with this lacquer's staying power, as it came out a winner in my struggle to have manis surviving hairwashes.

Have you tried any of these revamped L'Oreal polishes? If you come across them in a clearance basket like we did, I would certainly get them.

Libros / Books: 'La mirada de los ángeles' de Camilla Lackberg

¿Qué tal os va? Espero que os apetezca distraeros un rato leyendo mis impresiones sobre el último libro que he leído en español.
En nuestro país, está editado por Maeva, que nos permite leer el *primer capítulo* en su web.

Sinopsis:

Tras la muerte accidental de su hijo pequeño, Ebba y Mårten se trasladan a la isla de Valö para rehacer su vida. Ahí, se instalan en una granja en la que vivió la familia de Ebba hace muchos años. Pero la tragedia los sigue acechando, y un incendio, a todas luces provocado, saca a relucir la historia siniestra que pesa sobre la granja. Hace treinta años toda la familia de Ebba desapareció sin dejar rastro. Solo se salvó ella, entonces un bebé de un año, a quien encontraron sola en la casa. Desde ese momento, recibe una misteriosa felicitación el día de su cumpleaños, firmada con una simple G…
Patrik abre una investigación, y Erica, siempre en busca de material narrativo, empieza a tirar del hilo de la historia de la granja por su cuenta. Un acto impulsivo de Anna, la hermana de Erica, aún afectada por la pérdida del bebé que esperaba, revelará la verdad de golpe.

Con otras entregas de esta saga, lo cierto es que cuesta hacerse un poco con los personajes y cómo encajan en la historia. No tuve esa sensación con este libro. La historia de la desaparición de la familia de Ebba engancha desde el principio, así como la investigación que abre Patrik a raíz de las amenazas recibidas por Ebba y su marido, Mårten.

Me ha gustado que la autora haya profundizado en algunos personajes recurrentes de la saga, como Gösta y Martin, como ya hiciera en otras entregas con Mellberg, por ejemplo. Consigue que empaticemos con ellos y disculpemos sus meteduras de pata. 

Sé que hay una nueva entrega de la saga de Fjallbacka, pero tengo otros libros pendientes de leer, así que aún tardaré un tiempo en leerla. 

How is it going? Hope you're not too tired to read my thoughts about my latest read, Camilla Lackberg's 'The Angel Maker's Wife' / 'Buried Angels'.

After the accidental death of her only child, Ebba and Mårten move to the island of Valö to start a new life. They live in a farm where Ebba's family lived long ago. However, tragedy strikes again when an intentional fire brings to the surface the farm's dark history. Thirty years ago, Ebba's entire family went missing. The only person left was Ebba, who was only one year old and was found alone in the house. Ever since, she's been receiving a very mysterious card on her birthday, with only the letter G as a signature...

Patrik conducts a follow-up investigation while Erica, always on the hunt for new ideas for her novels, begins her own research. The truth will be unexpectedly revealed by Anna, Erica's sister, who is still mourning the loss of the baby she was expecting. 

I've had a hard time getting to know the different characters and how they fit into the plot, but it wasn't the case with this one. The disappearance of Ebba's family engages the reader from page one, as well as the events the inquest conducted by Patrik after the threats and attacks on Ebba and Mårten.

One thing I liked about the book was that the writer gave us more insight into some recurrent characters in the story, such as Gösta and Martin. She'd done that earlier in the saga with Mellberg, for instance. Thus, it's easier to sympathize with them and excuse some of their mishaps. 

I know a new book in the series has come out already, but there are other books I want to read as well, so I guess it'll have to wait.
