Espero que la vuelta a la rutina no se os esté haciendo muy cuesta arriba. Como véis, hoy os traigo la reseña de un libro que leí recientemente en inglés.
Esta novela, publicada en español como "El canto del cuco" está escrita con el pseudónimo de Robert Galbraith por nada más y nada menos que... J.K. Rowling.
Según la autora, que mantuvo el secreto todo lo que pudo, fue muy liberador poder escribir esta novela bajo otro nombre. De este modo, no tuvo la presión editorial y mediática que habría tenido de hacerlo con su auténtico nombre.

Hope you're doing fine and not having a hard time returning to your usual post-holiday life. as you can see, I'm sharing a book review with you today featuring one of my most recent reads in English.
The novel was published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith by none other than... J.K. Rowling.
According to Rowling, who kept this fact a secret for as long as she could, being able to write this novel under a different name was very liberating. It gave her the freedom and took off the pressure she would no doubt have had if she had chosen to write it with her own name.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.
Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.
I've very much enjoyed reading this book. From the word go the plot is very dynamic and it takes you no time to understand what's going on and figure out who's who. The writer provides a good profile of the characters in a way that we can understand how they act they do, what makes them tick, etc. The main characters, Strike and Robin are a perfect match, despite their rocky start.
All in all, the inquest felt a tad too long though I suppose a real detective's work involves following many leads and not getting much from most of them.
Particularly noteworthy is the ending, with a final twist you don't see coming. I'd forgotten what a great storyteller this author is, providing important plot twists when you least expect it.

Tras perder una pierna por culpa de una mina en Afganistán, Cormoran Strike sobrevive a duras penas con su trabajo como detective privado. Strike tiene un único cliente y tiene que vérselas con sus acreedores. Para colmo, acaba de salir de una larga relación y está viviendo en su oficina.
Hasta que John Bristow irrumpe en su despacho con una historia sorprendente: su hermana, la famosa supermodelo Lula Landry, a quien sus amigos conocían como el Cuco, aparentemente se suicidó meses atrás. La policía calificó el hecho de suicidio, pero John se niega a aceptarlo. El caso arrastra a Strike hasta un mundo habitado por bellezas multimillonarias, novios estrellas del rock y diseñadores desesperados. También le lleva a conocer todo tipo de placeres, tentaciones y engaños.
He disfrutado mucho la lectura de este libro. Desde el primer momento es muy dinámica y no cuesta nada entender la historia y saber quién es quién. La autora perfila psicológicamente a los personajes de manera que podamos entender porqué actúan como lo hacen, lo que les atrae y lo que les produce rechazo. Los personajes principales, Strike y Robin, forman un tándem perfecto, si bien tienen un primer encuentro algo accidentado.
Con todo, la investigación del caso quizá se hace un pelín larga, aunque entiendo que en una investigación auténtica un detective rastreará multitud de pistas y es probable que muchas de ellas no le aporten nada.
Es digno de mención el final, con un giro que no ves venir. Había olvidado lo bien que se le da a esta mujer tener entretenido al lector, que cuando menos se lo espera, se lleva una sorpresa.
