De compras por Liverpool / Liverpool Shopping Guide (I).

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,

In this post we'll be showing you what we bought in Liverpool, both makeup-related and unrelated.

Our first purchase was a Pay As You Go SIM card, so we could keep in touch with our family without worrying about exorbitant roaming rates. Before travelling, marox surfed the net cramming the different providers, until deciding Three UK was the most convenient one for us. They had a store in the Liverpool One shopping area that was a reasonable distance from our hotel, which was perfect.

The minimum top-up for SIM cards is £10 and the price plan it came with, called '321' (easy to remember, isn't it? included UK calls for 3p, texts for 2p and 1p per MB, with no connection charge for phonecalls.
However, ThreeUK gives customers 150 MB with each top-up, which were more than enough for us to use throughout our stay. The calls to Spain cost 3p -landlines- and 10p to mobiles, though these prices *see price plans* were only applicable when dialling the short codes provided by Three to that effect. 467 and 468 were the codes to use for mobile and landline numbers respectively. We used the remaining credit back in Spain.

Well, let's move on to the haul itself. The truth is we didn't really have much time to go shopping, though we managed to get some stuff to add to our luggage anyway.
When we travel, we usually save the last day to go shopping, but this time we could only manage a couple of hours before the shops closed the last day, so we had to prioritize and have a sure aim.
Needless to say, we made the most of those two hours. So much, that we'll be splitting our haul into two different posts rather than have an overlong one.

OK, time to see our clothes & accessories haul from Primark.

1- Necklace by OPIA, in silver and pastel shades. A nice gift for our mum, especially since she's bought a few clothes recently in these tones. Price: £5.

2 - Pyjama bottoms, in a cute lips pattern (marox). A great replacement for another pair that was way too worn out to use. Price: £5.

3 - Cosmetics bag (Marian): In red and with the traditional phone booth motif embossed. The zipper itself is in the shape of a phone box. It was cute beyond words and Marian simply couldn't leave it there and snatched it up. Price: £3.

4 - Peach-coloured blouse (marox): This shade seems to be all the rage now and is everywhere in stores, so it was hard to resist. Price: £10.

This is all for our first post on our purchases in Liverpool, dedicated mainly to clothes and accesories.
Stay tuned for the next installment to check out the skincare stuff and make-up that we got.
See you!

Guía de viaje de Liverpool / Liverpool Travel Guide (II)

¡Hola chicas!

Hi, ladies!
Ready to join us in our virtual tour of Liverpool? In the first part of our tour guide, see *here* we told you about the flight and our first hours in the city.

Day 2
For our first full day in the country, our group had planned an outing to the north of Wales.
Our trip began around 9.30am. The first stop was Port Sunlight, a village in the Wirral metropolitan borough, where William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme founded what would later become one of most important soap and cleaning product firms, Unilever.
The viscount, along with his brother, built a model village that would house his employees, complete with a pub that served no alcohol. Anything to ensure his workers were productive and keep their wives happy, as our guide explained.
The village is home to the Port Sunlight Museum and gift shop, as well as the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The gallery is famous for its paintings from the 18th and 19th century, as well as a collection of Wedgwood pottery.
We merely walked around the place for a few minutes.

We got into the bus again until we reached... Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllanty-siliogogogoch, or 'St. Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near the Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the Red Cave'. Yep, this little village located in the island of Anglesey has the longest place name in the United Kingdom - the world's third longest-. The name was apparently voted by neighbours back in the 18th century, as they wanted their village to have the honour of bearing the longest name of any railway station in the UK. One of the earliest examples of publicity stunts, I may add. The place name is commonly shortened to Llanfair PG. No wonder.

There's a small shopping gallery with a nice café, where you can take your picture with the place name so you can tell your friends you were there.

The next stop along the way was Conwy, located on the north coast of Wales. This picturesque market town is famous for its town walls, its castle - built on the instruction of Edward I of England - and its suspension bridge. The bridge, completed in 1826 is one of the first of its kind being built in the world. Today, it is only passable on foot.
A little bit of trivia for the reality show addicts out there: Drew Pritchard, the antiques dealer featured in the show 'Salvage Hunters' has his antiques emporium based in Conwy.

After visiting Conwy, our coach took us to the last stop in our trip, the town of Chester. This beautiful English bordertown is famous for its picturesque architecture, such as the black-and-white buildings in the city centre of medieval and Victorian origin. The city is home to footballer Michael Owen, actor Daniel Craig, as well as the legendary Lady Godiva, countess of Chester.

According to legend, the noblewoman took pity on the locals, who were suffering under her husband's oppressive taxation and appealed again and again to him, in the hope that he would remit the taxes imposed on his tenants. At last, weary of her entreaties, he said he would grant her request if she would strip naked and ride through the streets of the town. Lady Godiva took him at his word and, after issuing a proclamation that all persons should stay indoors and shut their windows, she rode through the town, clothed only in her long hair. Her request for privacy during her ride was disobeyed by one person, Tom the Tailor, forever known as 'Peeping Tom' or voyeur.

Our visit to Chester was at breakneck speed, as we had roughly two hours to have lunch and take a quick tour of the city centre. If you have longer than that, make the most of your time in this lovely city.

Back in Liverpool, we freshened up and went for a short walk around the Albert Dock at dawn, trying to kill time until the last activity we'd planned for the day, a visit to the famous 'The Cavern' club, which had the honour of being the venue were The Beatles played the most.

The original club was rebuilt across the street using most of the original bricks and arches and had first opened in 1957. The new 'The Cavern Club' is half the size of the original and the floor plan is different too.
Admission is 4 pounds, which is understandable considering it is one of the most popular tourist spots in the city. Locals and others claim that there are much better pubs in town, though.
Admittance on Saturdays is an outrageous 18 pounds, so try to avoid visiting then.
Besides The Fab 4, the venue has been
graced on stage by other music legends such as The Rolling Stones, Queen, Oasis, Elton John or Adele.
We enjoyed the music from The Beatles for about 3 hours. Then we went back to the hotel, because we were very tired after such a busy day. The day to come was going to be a busy one too.

Libros / Books: "Yo fui a EGB", de Jorge Díaz y Javier Ikaz.

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,
Here I am with a new review of the latest book I've read.

The story of 'Yo fui a EGB' ('I was a General Basic Education student') began with a facebook page, in which experiences and customs of those who studied under the former Spanish study plan could be shared.
This page had so much success that it reached 500,000 followers. After that, a blog came up, which has received several prizes.

The book consists of 10 chapters. Each one of them makes a review of customs of that time, the toys we played with, the snacks and sweets we ate, the TV shows we watched...

It has brought to me many good memories from my childhood. It has been such an adictive read that I've ended reading the book in just 2 days (literally).
Without a doubt, it's a very recommended read for those of us who are now in our thirties, for those of us who studied under the former Spanish General Basic Education study plan.

Compras varias acumuladas / Sundry Haul

Hola, chicas:

Hi girls,
Here we are again, to show you the stuff we've bought recently.

1- Waterproof cream eyeshadow from Deliplus, shade #02: (marox) - In a recent visit to my nearest Mercadona supermarket, I saw these see-through containers with clearance items from their recent limited editions. I paid €2, less than what Marian paid for hers this summer. She recently tried this and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent wear it had, which made me buy it straight away too. At the time, they had three different shades, but this was the only one available in the clearance basket. Not that I minded, since this was the one I was interested in after all.

Precio: 3€ y trae 200ml.

2 - 'Volume Definer' mascara in #840 Brown from Astor: (marox) - I recently ticked my Essence brown mascara as empty, so I tried to find a somewhat cheap substitute. It took me a while to find an affordable brown mascara. I was lucky to find this 40% off at Marionnaud perfumeries. The original RRP for this was €13, but I only paid 7.80EUR with the discount.
I haven't tried it yet, so I cannot say much besides the fact that the brush looks good, at least from what I can tell by the drawing in the tube. By the way, I think it's a brilliant idea to include a picture of the wand, since there's always inconsiderate people out there who have not the slightest qualm about opening a brand new product that comes unsealed just to check out the wand.
Other brands have replicas of the mascara wands as part of the counter, but I think this is very witty as well.
It contains 7ml of product and is made in the UK.

3-  Berry and Amaryllis 'Chapter 3' bodybutter, IF Perfumeries: (marox) - On the search for a new brown affordable mascara, one of the sales assistants drew my attention to a counter full of body care products from this brand they were discounting. She suggested this one, as was the one she'd tried. The scent is very pleasant, though the texture is very different from other similar products, it is quite buttery, It fares well enough on the moisturizing front. I tried to take pictures of the ingredients, but the see-through red tub made photographing it impossible.
Price: €3 for this 200ml tub.

4- Lichi+shea butter body cream from Deliplus (Marian).
On the subject of body butters, I'm showing you this one, from the 'Fruit Fusion' range  of Deliplus, sold at the Spanish supermarkets 'Mercadona'.
I love this kind of body butters, they are all very nicely scented.
Price: €2 for this 150ml tub.

5- Clearance stuff from Essence: (marox). I walked into the local Bodybell drugstore and saw they had the season clearance, so I grabbed three items. The polish has a nice duochrome shade -whether it is noticeable enough on the nails is another thing-. The lipgloss is in a very wearable shade and the colour payoff of the automatic eyeliner is fantastic. The fragrance I bought was the one I liked best besides the one I had tried in the past in a full-sized bottle (Like a first day of spring). The tester for another one wouldn't work, so I couldn't try the whole range.

Well, we hope this blogpost was useful. Have you tried any of these products? We'd love to hear your thoughts on them in the comments section below.

Hotel: Jury's Inn Liverpool

¡Hola!

Hi,
As customary for this blog, right after a trip we like to write a few posts about our experience there. This time we'd like to tell you our two cents about our accommodation while in Liverpool.

The Jury's Inn is a modern hotel, located in a very pleasant area, the Albert Dock. Most of the city's tourist spots are a short distance from it, a mere 10-minute walk.
It is easy to find, even at night, as the Ferris wheel and the Echo Arena are located right outside the hotel.

The Jury's Inn Liverpool has 310 rooms. The rooms are very spacious and have a King size bed and a single one. Both the beds and the pillows provided are extremely comfortable (finding good pillows in hotels is rare). You'll appreciate this fact if you've spent the day out doing sightseeing either in Liverpool or visiting the region.
The hotel is favoured by groups of friends celebrating a birthday or a hen/stag party. Don't let that fact put you off choosing this hotel, as it is very quiet.
I have a criticism to make, as the Wifi is not free (well, you can use it for an hour, by requesting a ticket at the reception desk, with coverage only in that floor). I seem to recall they charged 5 pounds per hour, 10 per day. Needless to say, we found another way to have Internet access, which we'll tell you about soon.

We had a group booking, including room and breakfast. The hotel has two entrances, one located in the underground floor -the one you'll use if you get there by car or bus- and another one in the ground floor. The breakfast room is located right next to the reception area, on the ground floor.

The breakfast provided is buffet-style and it was actually one of the most complete we've ever seen, with fresh and prepared fruit, coffee, juices and milk, a wide range of cereals, savoury dishes, scones and croissants, assorted yoghourts and jams, they even had peanut butter. If you were still hungry after breakfast, it won't be due to lack of variety.
The hotel has a cafeteria and a restaurant, though we didn't use any of those.
In addition, there's a pizza place right outside the hotel.
Well, now it's time to tell you a bit more about the room. We were given room 540 for our stay at the Jury's Inn, which offered stunning views to the Ferris wheel, as you can see in the pictures.

The room is furnished with two beds, a large-sized one and a single, supercomfy, as we mentioned earlier in this post. The rooms are equipped with a good-sized flatscreen TV and an electric kettle to prepare a cup of tea or coffee anytime -we're in the UK, after all.
The only cons were the lack of a mini fridge, which should be a must in a good quality hotel such as this. In the bathroom, the water pressure was just average, though it was enough. In addition, the shower is equipped with a British-style showerhead, meaning it isn't handheld, which is my preferred kind.
The bathroom had several soap dispensers and the soap provided was very pleasant to use -it smelled great and looked high-end.

The room cleaning was adequate, getting our towels changed when necessary and restocking other items as needed too. Both the bathroom and room looked clean enough.

Guía de viajes de Liverpool / Liverpool Travel Guide (I)

¡Hola!

Hi there!
Early in March we had the opportunity to travel to Liverpool, home to the Fab 4, The Beatles.
We flew as part of a group onboard an EasyJet flight. It was our first time flying with this budget airline. We had no big issues, though you need to pay attention to a couple of details. We'd have no trouble flying with them again. Unlike Ryanair, the staff is both polite and professional, as well as devoid of the 'profit motive' the Irish budget airline is so famous for.

Day 1. The flight departed on time and there were no more issues than having to wait a few minutes for two people in our group to board. The plane wasn't full and some people changed seats and there were no restrictions regarding carry-on bags.

We landed on schedule at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport, where our bus was waiting to take the group to our hotel, the Jury's Inn. As usual, a separate blogpost on that will follow.

After freshening up at the hotel and having lunch, we hurried to get to the Pier Head, where the last ferry of the day departed from. The journey lasts almost an hour and offers both indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for the changing weather of the country. The adult ticket was 8 pounds.

As all the tourist attractions were already closed for the day, we decided to walk along the area near the hotel, where by the way, there are some sights  to visit. This way we could plan what we'd be doing on the third day of our stay.
We also went to Liverpool One, the biggest shopping area in the UK. There are more and more streets full of stores, built on several levels. It's some kind of an open air shopping mall. To be honest, we had never seen anything like that.
Before closing time, we took the opportunity to go into a supermarket to buy some things for dinner.

At this point and tired because of the early start at 3.45am, the bustle of travelling (first by bus  and then by plane) and all that stuff, we came back to the hotel for the night, as the day ahead would be quite packed with sights.

Compras varias acumuladas / Sundry Haul

Hola, chicas:

Como todavía no me he cansado de ella, he decidido reponerla.

Hi girls,
Here we are again to show you the items we've bought recently.

1 - Shampoo bar for dry hair from Herbal: Purchased at a Carrefour hypermart for €3.99. The bar contains 100 gr, so it's fairly cheap. Marian bought this one to use herself. We haven't tried it yet, so we cannot tell you yet whether it's worth it or not.

2 - Fortifying shampoo bar from Herbal: Just like the previous one, purchased at Carrefour for €3.99 per 100gr of product. We bought it for our mum, but we'll definitely try this ourselves to give you our honest opinion.
Haven't tried it yet.

3 - Mizon's 'King's Berry Aqua No.1' face and body moisturizer (marox): Since I had to order some of my presents off Ebay, I decided to get this jumbo-sized jar for myself. It's nice, but I wouldn't recommend this for people with dry skin. I was dissappointed to discover my cream's INCI was different from the ingredient list in the picture provided by the seller and was thus surprised to see 'alcohol' as the second ingredient in my cream. The jar contains a whooping 300ml, which will last me a lifetime. I usually scoop some of this and then mix it with other creams I have, so I guess it will last me even longer.
I wouldn't recommend this cream for those with dry skin.
Seller's name is f2plus1 and sent the items bubblewrapped and included 2 samples per item.

4- Parfum no.15 from 'La Botica de los Perfumes' (Marian).
As I haven't got bored about it yet, I've decided to replace it. I love its scent (like J'Adore, from Dior).
I use it everyday, and I spray quite a big amount each time, so I guess I'll be ending it up soon.
When it's used up, maybe I'll be repeating with another one I used in the past, which I also like very much.
I actually like to change, from time to time.

5- Parfum no.23 from 'La Botica de los Perfumes' (Marox). Actually it was Marian who bought this from their store in Burgos, as she had their club card.
I've repurchased this same fragrance -equivalent to Lolita Lempicka- several times, though I don't rule out trying others.

6- Aloe Vera Hair mask from 'Naturaleza y Vida' (Marian).
It was Marox who discovered this hair mask to me, and the truth is that it's wonderful.
It leaves your hair soft and shiny, without a greasy feeling.
I've waited until I used up my banana hair mask from Bubbly/Bodyline, before I started using this one, and I think I'll buy it again once it's used up.

Well, this is all for now.
As you can see, we always fall into temptation.
We hope you found this post useful, or at least, that you find it entertaining.
