Aquí estoy de nuevo repasando lo que ha dado de sí la actualidad tanto nacional como internacional.
No sé si os resulten interesantes estos post, pero como ya he comentado en otras ocasiones, me lo paso bomba sacándole punta a la actualidad de vez en cuando y ya adelanto que con la noticia nacional que he seleccionado, voy a regodearme a base de bien.
Hi, I'm back again with my views on the latest national and international news. I don't know if you find these interesting, but like I've said already I have a hell of a good time writing these 'current affairs' posts and this week in particular, I'm warning you I'll be doing a lot of gloating with the national news bit and will be really putting my finger on the sore spot, were it really hurts.

SGAE ha sido intervenida como resultado de una larga investigación policial y judicial a cargo del juez de la
Audiencia Nacional de Madrid, Pablo Ruz. Ocho de sus miembros, entre ellos su presidente, han sido detenidos y posteriormente puestos en libertad con cargos, acusados de apropiación indebida, falsificación de documentos y desvío de fondos. Se da la casualidad de que éste magistrado es el mismo que lleva la instrucción del
caso Faisán por el "presunto" chivatazo de altos cargos policiales y gubernamentales a la banda terrorista ETA.
If you follow us from Spain you probably know what I'll be writing about: eight members of the Society of Authors and Publishers or SGAE,
the Spanish equivalent to ASCAP - including its president- were arrested and sent to jail, and later released on bail but charged with criminal conversion, embezzlement and forgery after an extensive investigation carried out by both the police and the Audiencia Nacional -which has its seat in Madrid- in a case headed by Pablo Ruz, Examining Magistrate. This jurist is also in charge of the investigation of the 'alledged' tip-off by both high-ranking police and government members to the Spanish terrorist group ETA.
Aunque incluyo un enlace a la Wikipedia sobre la SGAE, añadiré que en los últimos años se ha convertido en una institución tremendamente impopular en España, tras la imposición por imperativo legal del canon digital, apoyado en la Ley Sinde (¿o era "Sinve", de "sin vergüenza"?), más preocupada por extorsionar a particulares y pequeños empresarios -es el caso de dueños de bares y peluquerías- exigiendo el pago de dicho canon por el simple hecho de poner música en sus comercios, de comprar un reproductor de música, DVDs, y un largo etcétera.

Though I'm including a link to Wikipedia for more info on the SGAE, let me add that this institution has become one of the most impopular ones in Spain, after the controversial passing of the 'digital canon' Law, or blank media tax, supported by the 'Sinde Act'. Protecting intellectual property is one thing, but when you're more worried about milking individuals and small businesses - such as pubs and hairdressing salons- alike, collecting a fee for the simple act of playing music there or for the purchase of a music CD, DVD player and so on, you're going way too far.

Para explicar lo que ha estado haciendo la SGAE, me váis a permitir que recurra a una metáfora que aparecía en un e-mail que me mandaron hace tiempo: Imaginaros que sois carpinteros y fabricáis una mesa, que vendéis a un señor X. Este señor X la paga religiosamente y decide comer en ella todos los días, invitar a sus amigos, llevarla a su apartamento de vacaciones, etc. Imaginaros ahora que el carpintero se entera y pretende hacerle pagar -otra vez- por usarla todos los días, porque sus amigos coman en ella cuando les invitan, por llevársela de vacaciones. Ridículo, ¿verdad? Y de un morro impresionante. Pues ahora sustituid la palabra 'carpintero' por 'SGAE' y la palabra 'mesa' por 'CD, ordenador...'
In order to better explain what the SGAE has been up to, let me borrow a metaphor from an e-mail I received some time ago: Imagine that you're a carpenter and make a table, which you then sell to a gentleman called X. This gentleman paid it religiously and decides to eat on it every day, invite his friends over, take it to his holiday residence and so on. Let us think now that the carpenter finds out and pretends to make him pay -a second time- for using it every day, because his friends use it when they come over, for taking it with him on holiday. Ridiculous, right? What a nerve, right? Well, now replace the word 'carpenter' with 'SGAE' and the word 'table' for 'CD, computer...'
Para ilustrar lo absurdo y excesivo de esta medida y el afán recaudatorio de la SGAE, permitid que os recuerde que esta "noble institución" ha llegado hasta el punto de colarse en bodas y grabarlas en video (siendo demandados por los novios, que ganaron el juicio), de exigirle el pago -un 10%- de los derechos de autor pertinentes a la madre de un niño enfermo con quién se solidarizó el cantante David Bisbal recaudando fondos para él con un concierto gratuito. Me pregunto si se puede caer más bajo. Con acciones como éstas, se han cubierto de "gloria", perdón, de mierda.
Como véis, la mano de la SGAE es alargada y de caer en sus garras no se ha librado nadie -ni yo, pero de eso os hablo luego.
In order to illustrate how absurd and over the top these actions have been, let me tell you that the collecting spree of this 'noble institution' has reached the point of SGAE members sneaking into weddings and performing illegal video recordings to prove their case in court -and being sued in return by the newlyweds, who eventually won the case. Can you sink any lower than that? The SGAE certainly could: they demanded the payment of a 10% of the proceeds of a charity concert given by David Bisbal to raise funds for a sick kid, requesting the said payment to the kid's mother. Unquestionably, actions like these have certainly made the SGAE cover themselves in '*hit', I meant, glory. As you can see, the SGAE casts a really long shadow, no one can really escape, not even me, but I'll deal with that later.
Pero en muchos casos, ese dinero que con tanto afán se ha empeñado en recaudar la SGAE, no ha llegado a todos los artistas -más bien sólo a sus amiguetes, que son de su misma ideología política-, ya que esta institución también se ha permitido el lujo de cederles locales para celebrar actos de tipo político.
The money the SGAE has taken such pains to collect, in most cases has not even got to the hands of its fair recipients, the artists -or at least, not to all of them, just their buddies who share the same political views-, to the point of allowing them the use of premises of their property for political activities.
Como adelantaba en un párrafo anterior, ni yo me he librado de tropezar con la SGAE. Como sabéis, voy a clases de flamenco y en mi tierra he actuado ya varios años con mis compañeras de clase y mi profesora. Pues os diré que en una de esas actuaciones, normalmente gratuitas, pero en aquella ocasión, a beneficio de la
Asociación Española contra el Cáncer -AECC- se cobró una entrada de tres euros. La gala estuvo a punto de no celebrarse porque la SGAE no atendía a razones: que no somos profesionales, que era una actuación benéfica de cuyo dinero nosotros no veríamos un céntimo. Pues finalmente, la Peña tuvo que hacerse cargo del pago.
Volvieron a tocarnos las narices meses más tarde, con la actuación de fin de curso -gratuita- y una vez más la Peña tuvo que hacerse cargo. A punto estuvimos de cancelarla, porque encima ni nos decían cuánto había que pagar: a ver, por 10 euros no nos íbamos a poner a discutir, se pagan a escote y punto, pero si por ejemplo nos piden 600, pues les hubiéramos dicho que se fueran a robar a un camino.

As I mentioned in a previous paragraph, I also bumped into them and their mob-style antics. As you probably know, I go to flamenco lessons and in my hometown me and my classmates and instructor have made several amateur performances. With a few exceptions, these were not-profit, i.e. free. On one of those exceptions, we did a charity performance in favour of the most important Cancer awareness organization here in Spain, the AECC. Tickets were sold for three euros and the SGAE came knocking on our door and didn't see reason: we're amateurs, we wouldn't get a single cent from it as we were helping a charity, blah, blah, blah. The SGAE fee had to eventually be met by our folk dance club.
A few months later they poked their nose again, a few weeks before our end-of-course non-profit performance, and again, the club was lighter in the wallet. We almost cancelled because they wouldn't even tell us how much we were actually talking about: for a mere €10 of fee, we'd kept our mouth shut and paid, but if we were talking about, say €600, no way. We're not professionals and are not swimming in bucks precisely.
En cuanto a la actualidad internacional, la situación legal y judicial del ex-presidente del Fondo Monetario Internacional, Dominic Strauss Kahn, ha mejorado notablemente en la última semana. La acusación de violación a la que se enfrentaba, parece ser que se debilita, en parte por los cambios en la declaración de la demandante y por unas declaraciones en las que expresaba su intención de obtener el mayor beneficio económico posible con su acusación.
Aunque todo parece indicar que los problemas de DSK no terminarán por el momento, ya que se enfrenta a otra acusación por otro caso similar en Francia.
As for the international news, the legal situation of the former IMF President, Dominic Strauss Kahn, seems to have improved notably during the previous week. The attempted rape charges he faced are weakening, in part because of the differing statements presented by the plaintiff and her not-so-private comments and intention of making the most, in terms of an economic compensation, of the situation created by her accusation. But the coast is not clear for DSK yet, as he's facing similar accusations in his native France.
En deportes, Rafa Nadal no pudo hacerse con un nuevo título de Wimbledon ante un soberbio Novak Djokovic, que parece que definitivamente le ha cogido la medida.
Anteriormente, en Formula 1, Fernando Alonso pudo por fin sacarse la espinita de subir al cajón en la otra carrera de casa, el GP de Valencia, tras una carrera brillante.
In sports, Rafa Nadal could not bring his third Wimbledon trophy home, after losing against a superb Novak Djokovic who seems to have 'taken Nadal measurements right', so to speak. Earlier, Fernando Alonso finally got of his disappointment and had a podium finish in the second home Grand Prix held at Valencia Street Circuit after a brilliant drive.
En lo que al 'cuore' se refiere, el Príncipe Alberto de Mónaco, ha sido el monarca más mayor en contraer matrimonio, a los 52 años de edad, en una ceremonia no exenta de polémica. Corren numerosos rumores de que la novia intentó huir con rumbo a su Sudáfrica natal, tras enterarse de que, supuestamente, su ya marido es padre de un tercer hijo ilegítimo. Lo poco que he visto de la ceremonia en los informativos, me ha recordado peligrosamente a la difunta Lady Di. Por el bien de Charlene Wittstock, espero equivocarme.

In the 'gossip/social' scene, HRH, Prince Albert of Monaco became the oldest monarch to wed, at 52 in a controversial ceremony. Rumour has it the bride almost became a runaway bride, in an attempt to flee the Principality headed for her native South Africa after finding out her now spouse could be the father of yet another illegitimate child, the third one. From the little I've seen on the news, I was sadly reminded of the late Di, Princess of Wales. For Charlene Wittstock's own good, I sincerely hope to be mistaken.
