De compras por Tallin (Parte 1) / Tallinn Shopping Guide (Part 1)

En la capital de Estonia, podemos encontrar muchas de las tiendas que tenemos habitualmente en la mayoría de ciudades españolas (del grupo Inditex, Mango, H&M) y también otras exclusivas de Escandinavia, como por ejemplo Stockmann o Seppälä.
Lo cierto es que Estonia no me ha parecido un país caro, aunque evidentemente tampoco me suelo fijar en las tiendas caras de diseñador ni comer en restaurantes de tres estrellas Michelin.

Estonia's capital has many of the stores we're used to having in Spain (those from the Inditex group, Mango, H&M) as well as others exclusive to Scandinavia, as is the case of Stockmann or Seppälä for instance.
The truth is I didn't find Estonia a particularly expensive place to shop, though obviously I'm not one heading for upmarket, designer stores nor 3-Michelin-star restaurants.

Como os comentaba en las entradas de la guía de viaje, visité tres centros comerciales en Tallinn, de los que os voy a hablar a continuación.
Curiosamente, no he visto casi ninguna tienda fuera de los centros comerciales, salvo alguna pequeña tienda de ropa en la Ciudad Vieja, pero poca cosa, por lo que si estáis pensando en ir de compras allí, yo me iría directamente a algún centro comercial.

As I mentioned in my Tallinn Travel Guide posts, I visited three shopping centres in Tallinn which I'll review now. Strangely enough, I have seen almost no stores outside these shopping centres, except for a couple of small clothing shops in the Old Town, but not many really, so if you'd like to do some shopping there, I'd head straight away for some shopping centre or other.

Justo pegando al Old Town y por lo tanto, muy céntrico, tenemos el Viru Keskus, un gran centro comercial. Allí podemos encontrar un montón de tiendas de todo tipo, así como restaurantes y algunos puestecillos.
Como viajaba yo sola, no me atreví a hacer fotos así "de estrangis", mis famosas spy-cams, pero sí que he hecho de algunos escaparates. También tomé nota de las distintas marcas que podemos encontrar allí, especialmente en las perfumerías, ;) En Kaubamaja pedí permiso para hacer fotos de algún mueble y me dijeron que no.





Right outside the Old Town and therefore quite centrally located, we have Viru Keskus, a big shopping centre. There are lots of different stores inside, as well as restaurants and some stalls. Since I was travelling by myself, I didn't dare to take any undercover or 'spy-cam' pictures, but I did take photos of the outside of some of the stores. I also wrote down the different brands available there, especially as far as drugstores/perfumeries are concerned. I did ask permission to take some pics of the counters at Kaubamaja when I was at the checkout but they said no.

En el Viru tenemos tiendas como Accesorize, Zara, Guess, Mango, Vero Moda y conocí una nueva cadena de bisutería y complementos: Expressions, que tenía cosas muy monas. Creo que es de Estonia porque todas las tiendas que aparecen en el buscador de la página están en Estonia, aunque no estoy segura.
Su página no tiene gran cosa, pero compré una revista en la que vienen varias páginas con productos de esta tienda, así que las he escaneado para ilustrar más el post (como si no subiera siempre un montón de fotos, jeje).
Tenía entendido que las tiendas de Accesorize de Estonia vendían la gama de cosméticos, pero no fue el caso de las dos tiendas de esta cadena que visité en Tallin.




At Viru we can find international stores like Accesorize, Zara, Guess, Mango and Vero Moda and I was also introduced to a new jewelry/accesories store, Expressions, which had some really cute stuff. I think it's a local Estonian chainstore as the store locator only lists stores in Estonia, but I'm not sure. Their corporate website is no big deal, so I've scanned the pages from a magazine I bought at the airport, for illustration purposes (as if I didn't do enough picture spam already, lol). I understood the Accesorize stores in Estonia sold cosmetics but it was not the case of the two stores I went to in Tallinn.




En cuanto a cosméticos y belleza, podemos encontrar varias tiendas desconocidas por estos lares, como Stenders de jabones naturales y la perfumería Kaubamaja (la sección de perfumería de El Corte Inglés me pareció una birria al lado de esta tienda, especialmente porque no sólo tiene una amplia oferta de marcas de alta cosmética, sino también de otras más accesibles).
En el Virus Keskus también encontramos otras más conocidas como The Body Shop o L'Occitane.
Kaubamaja tiene unos grandes almacenes justo al otro lado del Viru Keskus, que no visité. Del Kaubamaja que hablo es únicamente la perfumería Kaubamaja Ilumaailm.
En esta perfumería hice la mayoría de las compras. Encontramos stands de marcas muy extendidas por todo el mundo como L'Oreal, Maybelline o Bourjois y otras no tanto, como las alemanas Manhattan o ArtDeco, Gosh, Make up Factory además de otras marcas nórdicas como Lumene o las suecas Isadora y Depend (sólo los cracklings) y dentro de la cosmética más exclusiva, aparte de las habituales, tenían incluso Armani.

As for beauty stores, we can find several stores unknown to many of us such as Stenders -natural products, mainly soaps- and the perfumery Kaubamaja (the cosmetics section at ECI seemed ridiculously tiny and boring in comparison, as it does not only offer a huge range of high-end brands but also some lower-priced options). There are other popular beauty stores at Viru Keskus like The Body Shop or L'Occitane. There's another Kaubamaja on the other side of the street, outside Viru Keskus, a department store which I didn't visit and therefore the Kaubamaja I'll be mentioning in this post is the Kaubamaja Ilumaailm perfumery inside VK. This is the place I bought most of the stuff. You'll find displays from some widespread brands like L'Oreal, Maybelline or Bourjois and from others not so widespread as the German Manhattan and ArtDeco, Gosh or Make up Factory, as well as some popular nordic brands like Lumene and the Swedish Isadora and Depend (just the crackle polishes, though).


Incluso tenían cosas sueltas (en una especie de peceras) de marcas como BYS -barras y brillos de labios-, de Copines (dúos de sombras) o de la línea PURE de Carlo di Roma (perfiladores), que aunque es española yo jamás en la vida la había tenido enfrente.
Para las aficionadas a pintaros las uñas, un gran stand de OPI (10,30€ cada esmalte, creo) y otro de Essie (8€), así como de la marca alemana Alessandro. Tenían varias ediciones limitadas de Alessandro. Estuve a punto de traerme algún kit de esmalte magnético+imán y ahora lamento no haber cogido ninguno.



They had some spare stuff from assorted brands (inside fish-bowls) like some BYS products (lipsticks and lipglosses), Copines (eyeshadow duos) or the higher-end line from the Spanish Carlo di Roma, PURE (it may be Spanish, but I'd never seen that before face to face -they had some eyeliners and eye pencils from Pure).
For nailpolish lovers, there's a big OPI display awaiting you (10.30 EUR a piece, I think) and another one from Essie (8 EUR), as well as a counter from the German brand Alessandro. They also had some Alessandro LEs. I almost got the star magnetic nail polish + magnet kit and now I regret I didn't.

Entre los puestecillos que comentaba de la primera planta, había uno de Konad. Tenían las placas a 5€, aunque no me llamó especialmente la atención ninguna y tras mucho mirar, me vine de vacío.
Un detalle que me ha gustado mucho de las tiendas en Estonia es que las dependientas no están encima de ti ni te preguntan qué quieres, lo que para mí es estupendo porque de lo contrario "me cortan el rollo". Eso sí, no me dieron ninguna muestra con mi compra.




If you remember the stalls on the ground floor I mentioned, there was one from Konad that sold image plates for 5 EUR. After a long time in front of the stall, I came back empty-handed as none of the plates really caught my eye. There was something I really liked about Estonian shops or shop assistants more like. Unlike in Spain, they don't come onto you, asking what you want and let you visit the store. I find nosy shop assistants quite off-putting, really. I didn't get any samples, though.

Y para algunas, imagino que esta tienda será lo más.
And for some, this store must be be like heaven on earth.

Guía de Viaje de Tallin (Part 2) - Tallinn Travel Guide (Part 2)

Día 3:

Como pudisteis comprobar en la entrada anterior, mi segundo día me cundió mucho pero estaba agotada y ese día en especial necesitaba conservar las fuerzas y me lo tomé con más calma.
Había planeado visitar el Museo al Aire Libre de Estonia, pero quedaba lejos y entre que me lié con los buses y que no sabía cuánto iba a tardar en visitarlo, decidí visitar el zoo, que estaba algo más cerca.
Normalmente, no me da por visitar zoos, pero me pareció que podía ser una buena manera de pasar la mañana ya que la tarde, motivo principal de mi viaje, ya la tenía comprometida *mantengo la intriga, jeje*.

Day 3:

As you could tell from the previous entry, I got a lot done on my second day but I was completely knackered and this day in particular, I knew I would need to get all my strength back together, so I decided to take it easier.
I had planned to visit the Estonian Open Air Museum but partly because it was a bit far and also because I messed up with the buses and wasn't sure how long the visit would take, I decided to settle just for the zoo which was a bit closer.
I don't usually visit zoos, but I thought it could be a good way to spend the morning, as the afternoon/evening, the reason behind this trip, was already taken *I'll keep the suspense a bit longer, hehe*.

Zoo de Tallin (Tallinna Loomaaed):

El trolebús nº7 me lleva hasta el Zoo de Tallin en el que podemos ver animales procedentes de muchos rincones del mundo y otras criaturas más cercanas -como podéis comprobar en la curiosa foto que adjunto más abajo, jeje-. Tigres, yaks y hasta un oso polar que era toda una estrella (salía a posar para la gente como cada dos minutos) nos esperan en el parque zoológico de la ciudad de Tallin. Se encuentra bastante apartado (hay que salir a la autovía), por lo que no recomendaría ir hasta allí andando.




Tallinn Zoo (Tallinna Loomaaed):

Trolleybus no. 7 takes me to the Tallinn Zoo where you can see animals from many faraway places and others from not so far away -as you can see in the odd pic I'm uploading, lol-. Tigers, yaks and even a Polar bear which was quite a star and definitely not camera-shy (he would come out to pose before us like every two minutes) await us on Tallinn's city Zoo. It's quite far (you have to get into the highway), so I wouldn't recommend going there on foot.

Muy cerca del zoo encontramos el centro comercial más grande de Estonia, el Rocca al Mare, donde pasé un buen rato disfrutando de las tiendas. Ese día me porté mejor y sólo compré un par de cosillas. También comí en un restaurante italiano -da Vinci pasta & pizza- que había allí.

Very close to the Zoo we have Estonia's biggest shopping centre, the Rocca al Mare, where I spent some time just enjoying the different shops. I behaved better this time and only got a couple of things. I also had lunch at an Italian restaurant -da Vinci pasta & pizza -there.

Día 4:

El día siguiente por desgracia amaneció lluvioso, así que también me lo tomé con calma.
The next day was a bit rainy, so I had no choice but to take it easy too.

Torre Epping (Eppingi torn):

De nuevo en la Ciudad Vieja, tenemos una nueva torre/museo, que nos ofrece información sobre las fortificaciones de Tallin, el armamento y las armaduras medievales. Los objetos expuestos ocupan un total de seis plantas de esta torre del siglo XIV. La visita se hace entretenida, ya que no se trata de una gran colección. Los visitantes pueden incluso probarse una cota de malla y una armadura o probar varias réplicas de armas medievales, aunque yo no me atreví.



Epping Tower (Eppingi torn):

Back in the Old Town, we have another tower/museum, providing some insight into the development of Tallinn's fortifications, medieval arms and armour. The objects are displayed on a total of six floors in this 14th-century tower. The visit is quite entertaining, as it's not a big collection.
Visitors can even try on a selection of chainmail and armour, as well as handling medieval replica weapons, though I did not dare to.




Palacio de Kadriorg (Kadrioru kunstimuuseum):

Este hermoso palacio era la residencia de verano del Zar Pedro el Grande, construido para su esposa Catalina y cuya construcción se encargó al arquitecto italiano Niccolo Michetti a principios del siglo XVIII. No os perdáis la hermosa biblioteca situada en el piso superior y decorada con los edificios más destacados de Tallin en marquetería.
Yo sólo visité el palacio en sí, no los edificios colindantes.




Kadriorg Palace and Museum (Kadrioru kunstimuuseum):

This beautiful palace was Peter the Great's summer residence, commissioned for the Tsar's wife, Catherine I and erected by Italian architect Niccolo Michetti in the early 18th century. Don't miss the magnificient library on the top floor, decorated in woodwork with Tallinn's landmark constructions.
I only visited the palace itself, not the surrounding buildings.




Al regreso, eché un vistazo al centro comercial Foorum, más pequeño que los anteriores (yo más bien diría que son unas galerías comerciales), donde no compré nada. Os debo post de las compras en Tallinn y hablaré de las distintas marcas que podemos encontrar allí, que ya os adelanto que son bastantes. Marian aún no ha visto lo que compré, así que supongo que estará deseando que lo haga.

On the way back, I had a look at the Foorum Shopping Centre, smaller than the previous two (I'd say it's just a shopping arcade, not a proper Mall), where I didn't buy anything. I owe you a post about my Tallinn haul and will talk about the different brands available there and let me just tell you they're quite a few. Marian has not seen what I got yet, so I guess she'll be eagerly waiting for that.

La tarde la dediqué a pasear un poco por la ciudad vieja. Quizá habría podido visitar algún museo más en este último día, pero considero que aún así mi visita a la capital de Estonia fue bastante fructífera.

I spent the evening wandering around the Old Town. I could have visited some more museums during my last day, but anyway I think my visit to Estonia's capital was quite fruitful all the same.

Me habría gustado visitar las ruinas del convento de Santa Brígida (Pirita kloostri varemed), algo alejadas del centro -y fijo que me pierdo, jeje- o aprovechar que únicamente durante dos de los días que pasé allí se podían visitar varios buques de guerra en el puerto de Tallin, cosa que sí hicieron algunos de los españoles con los que coincidí.

I would have liked to pay a visit to the ruins of St. Bridget's Convent (Pirita kloostri varemed), a bit far from the centre -I probably would have lost my bearings- or profit from the fact that only during two days of my stay one could visit some warships docked in Tallinn's harbour, which was a nice experience according to some of the Spaniards I met there.

Guía de Viaje de Tallin (Parte 1) - Tallinn Travel Guide (Part 1)

La semana pasada hice una escapadita de cinco días a la capital de Estonia. De esos cinco días, cuatro los he dedicado a hacer turismo y algunas compritas. En qué ocupé el quinto día (bueno, en realidad fue el tercero), me lo reservo para una entrada aparte *¡qué intriga!*. Regresé antesdeayer, agotada pero encantada.
Se da la circunstancia de que este 2011 Tallin disfruta del honor de ser Capital Europea de la Cultura.
Como ya hiciera con Berlín, me propongo dedicar una serie de entradas a hablar de este destino.
En primer lugar, deciros que me ha sorprendido la cantidad de españoles (turistas y expatriados) que me he encontrado. Me gusta que la gente se anime cada vez más a conocer otros países.





Last week I did a short trip -five days- to the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. I devoted four of them to doing some sightseeing and shopping too. I'll write a specific entry for Day 5 -or Day 3, actually- *sneaky, lol*. I came back the day before yesterday, completely exhausted but definitely delighted with it. This year will be like no other for Tallinn, as it takes on its role as European Capital of Culture.
As I did with Berlin, I intend to write a series of posts about the place. First of all, let me tell you I was surprised by the number of Spaniards (both tourists and expats) that I've met there. I like the fact that people are starting to get out of their comfort zone and visit other countries.

Aunque viajaba sola, he tenido la suerte de coincidir con gente muy agradable con la que he disfrutado de lo lindo: Bea y Juan de Tarragona, Carolina de Canarias y su novio estonio, Eva y su marido alemán, etc.
A ratos, me daba la sensación de estar en España: lo largos que son los días animaban a quedarse en la calle e incluso salir de tapas.

Although I was travelling solo, I've had the good fortune of meeting some very nice people I've had a great time with: Bea and Juan from Tarragona, Carolina from the Canary Islands and her Estonian boyfriend, Eva and her German husband, etc.
At times, I had the feeling of being in Spain: the length of the days is conducive to staying out late and even have some tapas.

Aunque Tallin se está poniendo muy de moda como destino turístico para los españoles, tal y como pude comprobar, no encontré ninguna guía de viaje, así que tuve que recurrir a San Google para conseguir información sobre museos, plano y demás.

No me enrollo más y paso a hablaros de Tallin. Tallin es la capital de Estonia y del condado de Harju. Tiene 400.000 habitantes aproximadamente, sin dar la sensación de ser una gran ciudad. Se encuentra en la costa norte de Estonia y quizá es la gran desconocida de los países escandinavos. Está a 80 kms al sur de Helsinki, lo que hace que mucha gente se anime a hacer una pequeña escapada al otro lado del Golfo de Finlandia, gracias a las múltiples conexiones diarias que posee con Helsinki principalmente, aunque también con Estocolmo.
Su centro histórico u 'Old Town' fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Desde enero de 2011 utiliza el euro, así que si tenéis pensado escogerlo como destino de vacaciones, puede ser una ventaja a tener en cuenta respecto a otros países europeos.
Pero Tallinn no es una ciudad que vive del pasado, ya que de Estonia han salido avances tecnológicos como Hotmail o Skype. En Tallin es posible acceder a Internet de forma gratuita en muchos lugares mediante la red Wi-Fi. Yo misma, lo he usado todos los días desde mi hotel para mantenerme en contacto por correo electrónico y con el Blogger.
Como curiosidad os diré que no he visto una sola cabina de teléfonos en toda la ciudad. El uso de los teléfonos móviles está tan extendido que se pueden incluso adquirir tarjetas de prepago a recargar con el importe deseado para llamar a casa a precios más competitivos -eso sí, aseguraos de que vuestro terminal está liberado-.

Although Tallinn is becoming an increasingly popular place to visit for Spaniards as I could tell for myself, I did not find any travel guides for sale and had to engage the services of St. Google to find info about the city, its museums or a city map.

I'll stop jabbering on and tell you about Tallinn. Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia and also of Harju County. It has about 400,000 inhabitants, without giving the impression of being a big, imposing city. It is located on the north coast of Estonia and is probably the lesser known of Scandinavian countries. It lies 80 kms south of Helsinki, which is an excellent reason for making a short trip to the other side of the Gulf of Finland, thanks to the many ferry services available daily, linking Tallinn mainly to Helsinki but also Stockholm.
Tallinn's Old Town is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As from January 2011, it has adopted the Euro as its currency, an advantage to be considered when compared to other European countries.
But Tallinn does not live on the past. Estonia has given the world many technological advances such as Hotmail or Skype. Wi-Fi is widely spread as I could witness myself: I could keep in touch via e-mail and check my Blogger updates everyday thanks to the hotel's free Wi-Fi system.
Trivia: I did not see a single phone booth while in Tallinn. Mobile phone use is so widespread that you can even purchase a pre-paid SIM card to call home at more competitive prices, as long as your terminal enables you to use cards from other providers.

Cómo llegar (avión):

No existen vuelos directos a la capital de Estonia. Yo viajé -por segunda vez y probablemente no la última- con la aerolinea checa CSA, que a diferencia de Iberia, ofrece servicio de catering (gratuito, se entiende) en todos sus vuelos. Tuve que hacer escala en Praga y el viaje exigió un madrugón de campeonato, ya que el vuelo de Madrid a Praga sale diariamente a las 7.10 de la mañana (y como no soy de Madrid, en mi caso supuso levantarme a la 1.30 de la mañana -vamos, que no dormí, me eché una cabezada después de cenar). Llegué a Tallinn a las 14.25 (hora local, en Tallin es una hora más que en España).
El aeropuerto de la ciudad, el Ülemiste / Lennart Meri se encuentra a 4 km de la ciudad y se puede ir andando incluso, ya que incluso el carril bici llega hasta allí. Yo utilicé un servicio especial de autobuses (Bus 90K) Aeropuerto/Centro/Aeropuerto, que sale a las horas en punto y media y que cuesta unos dos euros. Hace paradas en diversos puntos de la ciudad, cerca de los principales hoteles y estaciones de transporte. *El folleto no está actualizado, así que he escaneado el mío en dos archivos: 1/2 y 2/2*




How to get in (by plane):

There are no direct flights between Spain and Estonia, so for the second time (and probably not the last) I used the services of Czech Airlines aka CSA, which unlike the Spanish Iberia still offers free catering service on all their flights. The flight required a change of planes in Prage as well as an early start at quite an ungodly hour. Departure time was 7.10, but as I don't live in Madrid I was forced to get up at 1.30 am (didn't really go to bed, just took a nap after dinner). I arrived in Tallinn at 14.25 local time (1 hr + than in Spain).
The city's airport, Ülemiste / Lennart Meri is located 4 kms from the centre and you can even walk to it, as the road to it is pedestrian and biker-friendly. I used the shuttle service Airport/City Centre/Airport (Bus no. 90K) which leaves from the airport every full and half hour for about 2 EUR. It stops at several spots in the city centre, such as the main hotels or stations. *The shuttle brochure file is not up-to-date, so I've uploaded mine in two files, 1/2 and 2/2*.

Cómo moverse por Tallin:

La ciudad de Tallin carece de red de metro, aunque la red de autobuses, tranvías y trolebuses os llevará de una punta a otra de la ciudad si es necesario. Como ya os he comentado, mi sentido de la orientación es del todo inexistente y me costó pillarles el punto, aunque a poco mejor que a mí que se os dé, no tendréis ningún problema. Al igual que en Berlín, compré la tarjeta turística Tallinn Card de 72 horas en el hotel. Me costó 40€. Quizá no la amorticé tanto como en Berlín, ya que al ser una ciudad más pequeña, el transporte público no lo usé tanto.
La Tallinn Card lleva una banda magnética, por lo que en algunos sitios (museos) tendréis que introducirla en un lector especial, o bien lo harán en la taquilla por vosotros.




How to get around in Tallinn:

The city of Tallinn does not have an underground network, though the bus, tramway and trolleybus system will take from one side to the other if necessary. As I've mentioned before, my sense of direction is utterly and completely nonexistent and took me a while to get the hang of it, so if you do only a little better than me in that department, you'll have no problem at all.
Just like in Berlin, I bought the card developed by the Tourist Board. I got the 72 hour-Tallinn card for €40 from the hotel. I may not have milked this one as much as we did in Berlin, since the city's smaller size implied using public transport less often.
The Tallinn Card has a magnetic band on the back, so in some places (museums) you will have to insert it on a teller or the person at the ticket office will do it for you.

Me suele gustar planificar un poco mi estancia, así que esto fue lo que hice en esos cinco días.
I usually like to plan my stay, so this is what I did on those five days.

Día 1 (llegada):

Tras refrescarme un poco, salí a dar una vuelta por el centro histórico.
La plaza Mayor o del Ayuntamiento, Raekoja Plats es parada obligada. Allí veréis el ayuntamiento gótico mejor conservado del norte de Europa o la farmacia más antigua de Europa, que data de 1422 y que todavía hoy, sigue en funcionamiento. Es un lugar con mucha vida, lleno de restaurantes típicos -con precios acorde a su situación- y un punto de encuentro para los lugareños.
Me fui familiarizando con los distintos monumentos, cuya visita dejé para los siguientes días, ya que aún no había comprado la TC.

Day 1 (arrival):

After freshening up a bit at the hotel, I went for a walk into the Old Town.
The Main Square or Town Hall square, Raekoja Plats is a must-see. You'll find the best preserved town hall in the gothic style in Northern Europe or the oldest pharmacy in Europe, dating as far back as 1422 and still open today. It's a place full of life, with lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity -with prices usually befitting their priviledged situation- and a meeting point for locals.
I got familiar with the different sights but did not visit them, as I had not purchased my TC yet.

Día 2:
De vuelta a la Plaza del Ayuntamiento, visité la torre del Ayuntamiento o Raekoja torn. Es uno de los símbolos de la ciudad, con su torre octogonal de estilo gótico y 64 metros de altura. Está coronada por una veleta con la figura de Old Thomas.
Desde allí, y tras una subida por una estrechísima escalera de enormes escalones (no os sorprendáis si al día siguiente tenéis unas agujetas de campeonato, como fue mi caso) podréis disfrutar de una hermosa vista de la ciudad vieja. El observatorio es muy pequeñito, recuerdo que sólo estábamos yo y una madre e hija rusas y sinceramente, no creo que hubiera cabido nadie más.

Back to the Town Hall square, I went up the Town Hall Tower or Raekoja torn. It is one of the city's symbols, with its 64-metre, octagonal, Gothic tower. It is topped by another important symbol of the town, the Old Thomas weather vane.
From there, and after climbing a long, narrow and steep staircase you can have some truly amazing views of the Old Town. Don't be surprised if you have sore muscles from the climb over the next days, as was my case. The observation deck is really tiny, I remember it was just me and a Russian couple, mother and daughter and honestly, I doubt it could have accomodated a fourth visitor.

La iglesia de San Nicolás, del siglo XIII alberga un museo dedicado al arte religioso, con altares, lápidas y piezas ceremoniales de los distintos gremios, así como la obra pictórica más famosa de Tallin, la escena de la Danza Macabra o Danse Macabre ("Surmatantsu" en estonio), obra del artista del siglo XV Bernt Notke. No está permitido hacer fotos en su interior.

Niguliste Museum
St. Nicholas Church, dating from the 13th century, houses a museum dedicated to church art, displaying medieval burial stones, altarpieces and Tallinn's most famous painting, 15th-century artist Bernt Notke's Danse Macabre (Dance with Death), as well as ceremonial items from Tallinn's medieval craft and merchant guilds. Photos are not allowed inside.

Majestuosa catedral ortodoxa de Tallin, construida en 1900 cuando el país formaba parte del imperio ruso. Corona la colina de Toompea.
Los estonios la consideraban un símbolo de la opresión rusa e incluso estaba prevista su demolición, que finalmente no se llevó a cabo por falta de fondos. Como la URSS era oficialmente un estado laíco, este y otros muchos templos estaban muy abandonados. Esta Catedral ha sido meticulosamente restaurada desde que Estonia se independizara de la Unión Soviética en 1991.
No está permitido hacer fotos en su interior. Yo la visité en domingo y había culto, pero si sois respetuosos y discretos, nadie os dirá nada. Cuando la visitó esta pareja de Tarragona, me contaron que cierto turista se puso a sacar fotos a pesar de que hay varias señales que indican su prohibición y tuvo que llamarle la atención una anciana que estaba siguiendo el culto.




Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
This magnificient orthodox temple, was erected in Tallinn in 1900 when the country was still under the Rusian Empire ruling. It crowns the hill of Toompea.
Estonians regarded this as a symbol of the Russian oppression and was scheduled for demolition, but they never did due to lack of funding. As the USSR was officially non-religious, many temples including this cathedral were left to decline. The church has been meticulously restored since Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
Pictures are not allowed inside. I visited it on a Sunday and a service was being held, but if you're respectful and discreet, no one will say anything. This couple from Tarragona told me that when they did, some tourist started snapping pictures despite the many signs forbidding it and this old lady following the Mass had to tell him off.

Esta gran torre situada en la ladera de la colina de Toompea antaño fue de gran importancia estratégica, manteniendo a salvo a Tallin de sus enemigos. Ahora alberga un museo dedicado a la defensa de la ciudad, en el que se exponen desde cañones a armamento y una amplia colección de fotografías. Hay un café en la última planta y muy buenas vistas desde la mayoría de las ventanas.
En su interior suelen celebrarse pequeños recitales. Se permiten fotos previo pago de una licencia (no llegó a 1€).




Kiek in de Kök (low German for 'Peep into the kitchen', a nickname for towers at the time)

This massive tower situated on the slopes of Toompea hill once played a vital role in keeping Tallinn safe from its enemies. It now houses a museum depicting anything from canons and military equipment to a large collection of photographs. There's a cafe on the upper floor and great views from most windows.
It sometimes holds small recitals. Photos are allowed inside, as long as you get a license (less than €1).

Museo Marítimo de Estonia (Eesti Meremuuseum)

La torre de Margarita la Gorda (Pax Margareta) acoge un museo de cuatro plantas sobre la historia naval de Estonia con piezas muy interesantes como útiles de pesca del Neolítico o primitivos equipos de buceo. Subid al tejado y disfrutaréis de una estupenda panorámica del puerto y de la Ciudad Vieja.




Estonian Maritime Museum (Eesti Meremuuseum)
The historic Fat Margaret cannon tower houses a four-storey museum covering the sea-faring aspect of Estonian history, with some interesting items such as Neolithic fishing gear or primitive diving equipment. Take the stairs to the roof for a picture-postcard view of Tallinn's harbour and the Old Town.

Iglesia de San Olaf (Oleviste kiriku torn):

Esta imponente iglesia del siglo XIII llegó a ser el edificio más alto del mundo. Si aún os quedan fuerzas después de la subida a la torre del ayuntamiento, podéis subir a su torre para disfrutar de unas vistas a toda la Ciudad Vieja, la colina de Toompea y el puerto que os dejarán sin aliento, no aptas para personas con vértigo. El mirador es más grande pero estrechísimo, tanto que hay que caminar en fila india y apoyándose en las planchas metálicas de la propia torre. La subidita es aún peor que la de Raekoja torn.
Por desgracia, las pilas de mi cámara dijeron basta justo cuando llegué arriba, deseando capturar el momento. ¡¡No veáis qué rabia me dio, después de la subidita!!

St. Olaf's Church Tower (Oleviste kiriku torn):

This impressive 13th-century church was once the tallest building in the world. If you still have some energy left after the climb to the Town Hall tower, you can climb to the top and be rewarded with a magnificient and dizzying view of all of Old Town, Toompea hill and the harbour.
The observation deck is bigger than that of the Town Hall tower but really narrow, having to walk in single line and using the tower's metal structure as hand-support. The climb is even more vigorous and a lot more hard than that of Raekoja torn.
Unfortunately, my camera batteries said enough just as I reached the top, ready to capture the moment. I felt so pissed off, after such a hard climb!!


Y como no sólo de museos vive Marox, pues dediqué el resto de la tarde a visitar el Viru Keskus, un enorme centro comercial justo al lado de la Ciudad Vieja. Y sí, me dejé un dinerillo allí. De las compras de Tallin pensaba hablar en un post específico.

And as Marox cannot live by museums alone, I devoted the rest of the afternoon/evening to a visit to Viru Keskus, a huge shopping centre right next to the Old Town. And yes, I did spend some money there. I'll write a specific post about my Tallinn haul.

Champús sólidos de Bubbly (reseña) – Bubbly's shampoo bars (review).

Hace algún tiempo (cuando hicimos el sorteo para celebrar nuestros 50 seguidores), mencionábamos el champú sólido “Gran Suave” de Bubbly, y os dijimos que haríamos una reseña sobre él en condiciones. Pues bien, ya ha llegado el momento.

Some time ago (when we hosted the giveaway to celebrate our first 50 followers), we mentioned the 'Big Softy' shampoo bar, from Bubbly, and we told you that we were going to make a review about it properly. OK, it's time to do it.

En esta entrada os voy a hablar de los champús que hemos probado de la marca hasta el momento.

In this post I'm telling you about the shampoo bars we have tried so far.

Como veis en la foto, son los champús anticaída, calmante y el “Gran Suave”, que fue el que sorteamos.

You can see the following: the anti hair-loss, soothing and 'Big Softy' shampoo bars. This one ('Big Softy') was part of the giveaway we hosted.

El champú anticaída lleva entre sus ingredientes ortiga, enebro, aceite de Ylang Ylang y flor de lima (o lo que sea “limeflower”, porque en el diccionario online en el que he buscado esta palabra, no aparece). Bueno, este champú lo usa mi madre (yo sólo alguna vez), y dice que le deja el pelo suave y no se le cae tanto como antes. Lo suele alternar con el “Gran Suave”.

The anti hair-loss shampoo bar contains nettle, juniper, Ylang Ylang oil and limeflower. My mother uses it very often (I just do it sometimes), and says it leaves her hair soft and now she doesn't lose so much hair as before. She alternates this one with 'Big Softy'.

El siguiente que aparece en la foto es el calmante, lleva aceite de árbol de té, conocido por sus propiedades calmantes y antisépticas. Lo utiliza marox, sobre todo cuando tiene los brotes de dermatitis y psoriasis en el cuero cabelludo, y la mejoría es instantánea. Casi no se lo creía cuando lo probó.

The following is the soothing one, it contains tea tree oil, known by its antiseptic and calming properties. Marox uses this one, mainly when she begins with a rash, caused by dermatitis or psoriasis on her scalp, and after using it, she feels better at once. She couldn't believe it when she tried it.

El último que veis es el “Gran Suave”. Lleva aceite de enebro, aceite de almendras, aceite de romero y manteca de cacao. Desde luego, hace honor al nombre. Desde que lo probé, no he vuelto a usar otro. Me deja el pelo muy, muy suave y brillante.

The last one you see is 'Big Softy'. It contains juniper oil, almond oil, rosemary oil and cocoa butter. It has a very appropriate name. I haven't used another one since I tried it. It leaves my hair very, very soft and shiny.

Todos estos champús hacen muchísima espuma. Generalmente una sola aplicación es suficiente para dejar el pelo limpio.

All these shampoo bars make a lot of foam. One application is usually enough to leave your hair clean.

Y todos estos beneficios para el pelo al módico precio de 4,80€/unidad (que pesa 90 g.). Creo que ha subido el precio, pero seguiré comprándolos, porque para mí son los mejores.

You can get all these benefits for your hair at the reasonable price of €4.80/each (90 g. weight). I think the price has increased, but I'll keep buying them, because they're the best for me.

UDLS / NOTW: P2 - '700 Rich & Royal'

P2 – 700 Rich & Royal

Dejo este post programado, con la manicura que llevaba antes del viaje.

I have scheduled this post featuring the mani I was sporting before my trip.

Día 1: Por la noche, aplico una capa de base de Basic de venta en las droguerías Schlecker, y dos de este esmalte, ya que con una no consigo cubrir por completo toda la uña. Aplico SV. La fórmula de este esmalte de P2 se trabaja mejor que la del otro, pero el pincel se las trae, pues tiene un pelo medio suelto que dificulta bastante la aplicación, tal y como podéis ver en una de las fotos. Pero bueno, al final he logrado un resultado bastante aceptable. No sé si pasará en más esmaltes de esta marca o a mí me tocó el defectuoso. Aunque apliqué SV, el otro P2 que tengo tenía mucho brillo de por sí. El tono es bastante parecido, pero es que en nuestra primera visita al DM, el stand de P2 estaba bastante arrasado y no había gran cosa donde elegir.

Day 1: At night, I put on a coat of base from Basic, available from Schlecker drugstores and another two of this polish as one is not enough for an even application. I topped it all with some SV. The formula on this P2 is a lot better than on my other one, though in this case it's the brush that gets me annoyed. There's a stray bristle that makes application trickier than it should -see one of the pics to know what I'm talking about- though I managed to get a pretty decent result in the end. Although I put on some Seche over this, my other P2 was quite glossy on its own. The colour is very similar too, but unfortunately the P2 display we found on our first visit to a DM drugstore was pretty much raided and there wasn't much to choose from.

Día 3: Sesión de fotos por la mañana y por la noche, me hago una estampación en una uña para estrenar la placa M-64 de Konad que compré en Beautik. He usado el stampy en plata también del Beautik de Salamanca (nos llevamos los dos últimos que quedaban, jeje). He conseguido transferir casi por completo los diseños en las dos uñas, no está mal teniendo en cuenta que soy aún una novata en esto de la estampación. Quizá me ha resultado un poco más fácil que con las placas de uña completa de Essence, pero supongo que con la práctica, acabaré pillándoles el punto.

Para proteger el diseño, he matificado esas dos uñas con el topcoat de Fairwind que compré hace tiempo en Schlecker. Para el precio que tiene está genial: 0,99€ por 7ml. Lo que no sé es si lo sigan vendiendo. El esmalte de P2 sigue bien, aunque el desgaste de las puntas en el dedo índice derecho que ya noté antes de la estampación, amenaza con convertirse pronto en un desconchón. Por suerte, sigue igual.

Day 3: In the morning, it's time for this baby to pose in front of the camera and at night, I got my stamping kit out and did one accent nail for the première of the M64 Konad plate that I got at Beautik in Salamanca. For stamping I used my new stampy in silver -btw, we got the last two left in the store, hehe. I managed to transfer the design almost entirely, not bad considering I'm still pretty new at stamping and am not very handy in general, lol. Maybe I did find it slightly easier with this plate than with the full-nail Essence plates but I guess I just need more practice until I get the hang of it.

In order to protect the design, I mattified them with the Fairwind topcoat that I got a while back from Schlecker. It's very good value for money, you get 7ml for 0.99 EUR. What I don't know is if it's still available or was a LE item. The P2 polish is still looking good though the tipwear in my right index especially is threatening to get chipped soon. I noticed that before I did the stamping and thankfully has not got worse.

Día 4: Sesión de fotos tras la estampación. De momento la manicura sigue perfecta, salvo por lo que comenté del dedo índice derecho. Debo destacar que mis padres no me dejan fregar platos -para que mis manitas no sufran por la dermatitis atópica que tengo desde hace años. Me lavo el pelo a la tarde y no aguantan en condiciones para el viaje, por lo que en lugar de retocar tres uñas, me las despinto y doy forma.

Day 4: Post-stamping photoshoot. I'll wash my hair in the evening and doubt it will hold up fine for the trip. The mani is still holding up just great, except for the minor damage to my right index fingernail. I should mention that here at my parents I don't wash the dishes -so my hands don't get too much beating from my long-time friend, atopic dermatitis). I wash my hair in the evening but they don't make it looking decent for the trip, so instead of touching up three nails I took it off and shape my nails.

De vacaciones - On Holiday

Perfumador viaje Marionnaud / Marionnaud Pocket Spray

Hola de nuevo:

Hace unos días comenté que había hecho unas compritas de cosas para viaje en Marionnaud y tenía pendiente enseñaroslas.
Pues bien, sólo compré dos cositas. La primera, un perfumador de viaje que podemos rellenar directamente desde nuestro vaporizador de perfume de forma limpia y segura. Es similar -vamos, una copia- del famoso Travalo que seguro habéis visto por Internet y que en tienda física, que yo sepa al menos, podemos encontrar en las perfumerías Douglas.
El de Marionnaud está disponible en tres colores. Si mal no recuerdo, aparte del morado que véis, en negro y en plata.

I few days ago I mentioned I'd bought a few travel items from Marionnaud but have not had the time to show them to you yet.
Well, I only bought two things. The first one, a pocket spray you can refill with your favourite fragrance straight from your own bottle spray. It's very convenient and safe. It's similar -well, a copy- of the famous Travalo you've probably seen on beauty blogs and that as far as I'm aware of, here in Spain is available at at least one chain of brick & mortar perfumeries, Douglas.
The Marionnaud version is available in three different colours. If my memory serves me right, apart from this one in purple, you can also get it in black and silver.




Aún no lo he estrenado, aunque pronto lo haré ya que estaré unos cuantos días fuera. A la vuelta, tendréis algún post viajero, seguro. Voy solita, así que echaré un montón de menos a mi habitual compañera de viaje, mi hermana Marian. Confío en que os mantenga entretenidas con alguna entradita. Aprovechando que donde voy hay buena cobertura wi-fi, mientras descanso intentaré darme un paseo por vuestros blogs.
Tengo la duda de si lo podemos "limpiar" o si tenemos que usar siempre el mismo perfume, por aquello de que no se mezclen los olores. Lo pregunté en la tienda y no lo sabían, puesto que les acababa de llegar pero se ofrecieron a preguntar y darme una respuesta. Ya os diré qué me cuentan.




I haven't used it yet, but I very soon will since I'll be away for a few days. And yes, you can expect some travel-related entries when I get back. I'm travelling solo this time and will definitely miss my usual travel companion, my sister Marian. I expect she'll keep you entertained with some entries of her own. The place I'm going has good Wi-fi coverage, so I'll try to keep track of your blogs when I'm resting.
I wondered if we can 'clean' it or have to always fill it with the same fragrance, to prevent getting a mixture of scents. I asked about this at the store and they had no idea but offered to find out and let me know about it. I'll keep you posted on that.




El precio, creo que es el mismo del Travalo, es decir. 9,90€. Tiene una capacidad de 4ml y nos dará para 50 pulverizaciones. La primera carga es gratuita, así que en el Marionnaud donde suelo comprar pedí que me lo llenaran con 'Flower' de Kenzo -que me encanta- para ir sobre seguro.

It was € 9.90, which I think is the same price we pay for the Travalo here. It holds 4ml and you will get 50 spritzes out of it. The first charge is free, so I asked for it to be filled with 'Flower' by Kenzo, which I love and is a pretty safe bet.

Y esta fue la otra comprita. Un gel de baño en tamaño viaje -50 ml, ¡más mono!- de la marca Isana. Curiosamente, tienen productos (minitalla y normales) de esta marca alemana de las droguerías Rossmann, que son más baratitos que las pocas minitallas que tienen normalmente. Había por ejemplo una de crema de manos con aloe vera de Isana que supongo acabaré comprando cuando gaste -me falta una eternidad para ello- la que compré en Alemania de la marca Florena. Así no me da pereza llevar crema de manos en el bolso, porque si tengo que meter una de tamaño normal, sé que lo voy a hacer dos días, al tercero la saco del bolso/alforja de la burra.



And that's the other thing I purchased, a travel-sized shower gel. It has 50 ml and is soo cute!! from the brand Isana. Strangely enough, Marionnaud carries a small selection of this low-cost German brand, available there at Rossmann drugstores. They're cheaper than the usual items there. They had a travel-sized Aloe Vera hand cream that I'll probably end up buying when I use up the Florena one I got in Berlin, though that will probably take me ages anyway. I do mind the extra weight carrying a full-sized cream would imply and I know I may commit to do so for a couple of days but will give up entirely in no time in order to make my bag/donkey saddlebar, lol- lighter.

Me pregunto porqué es tan difícil encontrar productos de viaje en España -aclaración: sin que nos cobren el oro y el moro por ellos. Mercadona tiene cuatro cosillas que no me acaban de convencer. A raíz de las restricciones de líquidos en el equipaje de mano sí que encontramos algo más que hace años, pero estamos aún a años luz de la oferta que hay por ejemplo en Alemania. Tanto Ihr Platz, como Rossmann, DM, etc tienen una sección genial de minitallas.
*Hoy mismo*, Salander se quejaba de no encontrar un protector solar de tamaño viaje para llevar en el equipaje de mano. Yo también lo he estado buscando y me he rendido: me llevo una protección facial de Avene.

I rather wonder why it's so hard to find travel-sized products here in Spain, I mean reasonably-priced also. Mercadona has a handful of them but I don't like them very much. Right after the ban on liquid products onboard we started getting some more, but we're still miles -or should I say 'light years'- away from what's on offer in Germany. Both Ihr Platz, Rossmann, DM, etc have a huge aisle of travel-friendly products.
Salander was complaining *today* about the impossibility of finding a travel-sized sunscreen to carry in her hand-luggage. I've been looking for one myself and gave up. I'll be taking a face sunscreen with me from Avene that I've borrowed from my sis.

Actualización: La última vez que estuve en Marionnaud, volví a preguntar si era posible limpiar el perfumador de la fragancia anterior y no sabían nada. Me sugirieron que probara con una jeringuilla sin la aguja (??) aunque a mí se me ocurre que se podría cargar una vez de agua termal en spray.

Por otra parte, el perfumador me parece muy seguro. A diferencia de otros que he tenido, no se ha derramado nada. En cuanto a la duración, lo tengo a la mitad (lo usé únicamente durante mi estancia en Tallin). Si sois de echaros una buena cantidad de perfume, es probable que se os acabe pronto.

Update: The last time I went to Marionnaud, I asked again if it was possible to clean the spray from the scent left by the previous fragrance but they still had no idea. They suggested using a syringe without the needle (??) but I'm thinking you could load it once with your thermal water spray.

On the other hand, this pocket spray is very neat and safe to use. Unlike others I've used in the past, this one didn't leak/spill at all. How long does it last? Well, mine is half-full (I only used it during my stay in Tallinn). If you're one to spritz yourself in perfume like all day long, one loading won't get you far and will run out of it in a few days.
