UDLS/NOTW: Kiko #318

Hola de nuevo:

Hoy os enseño mis uñas de esta semana, con este esmalte de KIKO, el 318, que compré en Salamanca y que os enseñé aquí. Es un color que KIKO describe como malva claro, pero la verdad es que me resulta bastante difícil de describir.
Así que lo mejor es que lo veáis por vosotras mismas.

Today I'm showing you my nails for this week wearing this polish from KIKO, the shade #318, which I bought in Salamanca and showed you here. KIKO describes it as light mauve, but I really find this shade quite hard to describe. So, the best thing is to see it for yourselves.




Ya ni me acordaba de que no era la primera vez que uso este esmalte. Rebuscando entre mis fotos de archivo, encontré unas con este mismo esmalte que me hice en julio. Supongo que en su día pensé hacer una entrada y al final no la hice.

I almost forget that this is not the first time I've used this polish. I found in my hard drive some pics of this polish I took in July. I guess I thought of posting about it and I finally forgot to.

Para esta manicura me apliqué el gel de calcio de Basic, y tras dejarlo secar unos minutos, me dí dos capas finas de este esmalte. Encima, mi adorado Seche Vite.
La duración ha sido excelente. Si no recuerdo mal, creo que han sido 5 días, y ayer resistió una sesión de natación de 30 minutos, y la posterior ducha con lavado de pelo incluído.
Eso sí, después de eso, los pequeñísimos desconchones de los dedos índice y medio de la mano derecha se fueron haciendo cada vez más grandes.
¿Y la mano izquierda? Pues prácticamente intacta (como casi siempre), salvo algún pequeño desconchón.



For this mani I applied the calcium gel from Basic, and after letting it dry for a few minutes, I applied two thin coats of this polish. And my beloved Seche Vite on top. Its lasting time has been excellent. If I'm not wrong, I think I've been wearing this for 5 days, and yesterday it survived a 30-minute swimming session, and the subsequent shower and hair wash. But after that, the tiny chippings of my right hand index and middle finger became bigger and bigger. And what about my left hand? Well, almost intact (as usual), except for some tiny chipping.

Creo que 5 días son suficientes, así que ha llegado el momento de quitármelo y pensar en cuál va a ser el siguiente.

I think that 5 days are enough, so it's time to remove it and start thinking of the following one.

Libros / Books: The Help - Kathryn Stockett

Hoy vengo con algo diferente. En esta ocasión, me gustaría hablaros del último libro que he leído y que compré en una de las tiendas del aeropuerto de Schiphol, Amsterdam. Como en Tallin arrasé y me llevé tres, sólo me llevé éste de recuerdo de nuestro viaje a Holanda.
Lo cierto es que me estoy empezando a fijar en los e-books cuando veo los folletos de las tiendas de electrónica. ¿Alguien tiene alguno? ¿Cuál? ¿Qué tal van?




Today I'm back with something different. This time, I'd like to tell you about my latest read that I purchased at one of the stores within Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. As I really went overboard in Tallinn where I got three books, I only bought this one as a token of our trip to The Netherlands. The truth is I find myself taking a look at the e-book devices whenever I get my hands on a leaflet from stores selling electronics. Does anyone own one of those? Which one? Are they any good?

El libro se encontraba en una sección destacada, dentro de la lista de los diez más vendidos y tras echar un vistazo a otros de los títulos, me decidí por él. En parte, porque se sale un poco de los que suelo comprar cuando viajo, novelas divertidas y con un trasfondo romántico como la que os enseñé *aquí* en mi primera entrada sobre libros.
Curiosamente, el libro fue rechazado en su día por más de 50 editoriales, aunque tan sólo dos semanas después de su publicación ya estaba en las listas de títulos más vendidos.
Al llegar a caja, la dependienta que me atendió me dijo que lo había leído y le había gustado mucho, así que como supondréis tenía ganas de comprobarlo por mí misma.

The book was included in a list of 10 best-selling books and after searching through the other titles I made up my mind about this and got it. In part, I did so because it's not one my 'safe', comfort-zone choices in airport book hauls, my usual chick-lits with some romance that make a fun read, as was the case of the first book I reviewed *here*.
Strangely enough, the book was rejected by more than 50 publishing houses, though it went straight to the bestsellers list two weeks after publishing. When I got to the checkout, the shop assistant mentioned she'd read it and enjoyed it very much, so as you can imagine I was very eager to check it out for myself.

Como podéis ver en la foto, he leído el libro en su edición original, pero no tendréis problema para encontrarlo en las tiendas, ya que se ha llevado a la gran pantalla *aquí*. El título en español es "Criadas y señoras", publicado por la editorial Maeva, de la que os dejo una foto tomada del foro abretelibro. Podéis leer el primer capítulo en su página promocional, *aquí*.



Esta novela supone el debut literario de la norteamericana Kathryn Stockett y en él nos habla de un tiempo no tan lejano en el que blancos y negros no podían utilizar las mismas bibliotecas, tiendas ni tampoco baños. Cuesta pensar que todo eso sucediera a principios de los años 60, especialmente ahora que EEUU está gobernado por el primer presidente negro de su historia.

This novel is the literary debut of US author Kathryn Stockett where she writes about a not-so-distant time when black and white people could not use the same libraries, go to the same grocery stores, talk about using the same bathroom. It is hard to imagine that all that happened in the 60s, especially now that the US has for the first time an African-American president.

La historia está contada en primera persona por tres personas: Skeeter, una joven blanca de buena familia recién licenciada y ansiosa por ejercer de periodista, aunque con más ganas aún de averiguar por qué la sirvienta de su familia, Constantine- a la que adoraba y que prácticamente la crió- desapareció de la noche a la mañana en su ausencia. La principal preocupación de su madre y sus amigas es verla casada. Las otras dos narradoras son Aibileen, una criada de color que está cuidando a su decimoséptimo niño blanco, un año después de haber perdido a su único hijo. Aibileen ayuda a su amiga Minny a conseguir un nuevo trabajo. Minny es una persona que dice lo que piensa, lo que le ha llevado a ser despedida de más de una docena de trabajos.

The story is told from the perspective of three women. Skeeter is a white, newly-graduated socialite, very eager to start working as a journalist but even more eager to find out why her beloved family maid Constantine -who practically raised her- disappeared almost overnight in her absence. Her mother and friends are more worried about seeing her married. The other two voices telling the story are Aibileen and Minny. Aibileen is a 'coloured' maid raising her seventeenth white child, a year after losing her only son. Aibileen is helping her friend Minny to get a new position. Minny likes to call a spade a spade no matter what, but speaking her mind has made her lose more than ten positions.

El libro se lee bien, en inglés llama la atención que la autora adopta la forma de hablar de la población sureña y de color. Una historia sobre la amistad, la segregación racial y una pizca de amor que en algunos momentos ofrece un vistazo a la realidad más violenta de la época, con agresiones brutales a aquellos que de forma voluntaria o no desafiaban las "normas" establecidas. Y es algo que estas mujeres tan distintas tienen muy presente cuando se plantean relatar desde dentro lo que supone ser una sirvienta de color en una familia blanca en Mississippi, contando lo bueno Y lo malo.

The book is easy to read, even though it adopts the speech variety used by southern and black people. It's a story about friendship, racial segregation and a pinch of romance. It also offers a brief glimpse into the violent reality of the time, with brutal beatings to those who consciously or unconciously defied the established 'rules'. And it's something these three women keep in mind when they decide to tell and write from the inside what it is like to be a black maid working for a white family in Mississippi, telling both the good AND the bad.

Este libro puede ser una idea a tener en cuenta la próxima vez que compréis un libro, bien para vosotras o para regalar.
This book is worth keeping in mind the next time you go into a bookstore, either looking for a nice read for yourself or for a present.

Parecidos razonables/Reasonable lookalikes: Models Own 'Mystic Mauve' vs. Essence 'Purple Diamond'.

This time, you can see the likeliness between the polishes 'Mystic Mauve' from Models Own, and 'Purple Diamond', from Essence, which I already showed you here.

No son clones exactos, pues el de Essence es más morado que el de Models Own, pero la verdad es que, si los viera por separado, no sabría distinguir uno de otro.

Ambos tienen acabado “foil”.

They're not exact dupes, as the Essence shade is 'more purple' than the one from Models Own, but the truth is that if I saw them separately, I couldn't tell one from the other.

Both of them have foil finish.

Me sorprende la cantidad de tipos de acabados de esmaltes que estoy probando últimamente. Antes, sólo tenía los típicos de brillito metalizado o de esos en acabado nacarado.

I'm surprised about all the different kinds of polishes (I'm talking about the finish) I'm trying lately. Before now, I only had those typical ones with either a metallic or a pearl finish.

De compras por Ámsterdam - Amsterdam Shopping Guide: Douglas

Hoy vengo con la ¿última? entrega dedicada a las poticompras de Ámsterdam y en esta ocasión me gustaría hablaros de Douglas. Puesto que en España tenemos perfumerías Douglas y también os hablé de ellas en las entradas de compras de Berlín, ahora simplemente mencionaré aquellas marcas que podemos encontrar en las droguerías Douglas de Holanda.
Nosotras visitamos la tienda de Kalverstraat 71, una de las principales calles comerciales de la ciudad y la perfumería Douglas está al lado de una tienda Rituals, así que no tiene pérdida.
Es una tienda muy amplia, de dos pisos.

I'm back with the last? post in the Amsterdam make-up shopping guide series and today I'll be talking about Douglas perfumeries. As we have Douglas here in Spain and I already talked about them at length as part of the Berlin shopping guide, today I'll only mention those brands specifically found in The Netherlands. We visited the store located in Kalverstraat 71, one of the city's main shopping streets and the Douglas perfumery is next to a Rituals store, so it's hard to miss. It's a big, two-storey store.

Aparte de las marcas que podemos encontrar en Douglas (ArtDeco, Isadora, BeYu), en Amsterdam también tenían la marca Black Opal, de la que ya os hablé y stands de otras que no vimos en ningún otro sitio, como Herôme o Koh, especializadas en productos para la manicura, principalmente esmaltes. El precio de los esmaltes de Herôme rondaba los 7€ y Koh algo más.
En algunos Kruidvats vimos alguna cosa suelta de Herôme, principalmente en las cestas de liquidación, pero no un mueble propiamente dicho.
En Douglas tenían únicamente -aunque era bastante grande- la colección World Inspired Colours o WIC, que podéis ver en la foto.




Apart from the Douglas exclusive brands (such as ArtDeco, Isadora and BeYu), in Amsterdam you will also find the brand Black Opal I mentioned in an earlier post and displays from others we didn't see anywhere else like Herôme or Koh, both specializing in manicure-related products, namely nail polishes. The prize for Herôme polishes was around 7 EUR and Koh were pricier. We did see a couple of Herôme polishes in other stores like Kruidvat, at reduced prices in the discontinued products baskets/fishbowls, not as part of a proper display.
Douglas merely -large as it is- had the World Inspired Colours collection or WIC, pictured here in this post.




A diferencia de Berlin, en Amsterdam no vimos stands de OPI, que sí encontramos por ejemplo en las tiendas del aeropuerto de Schiphol. De precio, creo recordar que unos 14 €.
Unlike in Berlin, this Amsterdam Douglas store does not have an OPI display. The only place we found that was at the stores in Schiphol airport. If I remember right, they were about 14EUR each.

De compras por Ámsterdam - Amsterdam Shopping Guide: Dirx Drogist

Hoy vengo con otro post, probablemente el último, dedicado a las tiendas de visita obligada en Amsterdam para potingueras. En esta ocasión, os voy a hablar de una cadena de droguerías de lo que no había oído hablar ni leído en blogs: Dirx Drogist.




I'm back with another post, probably the last one, about the must-see places of interest for makeupholics on a budget in Amsterdam. This time, I'd like to write about a drugstore chain I'd never heard or read of on the blogs: Dirx Drogist.

Lo cierto es que dimos con una de las tiendas que esta cadena posee en Ámsterdam *ver aquí* por casualidad, ya que se encuentra enfrente de uno de los Kruidvats que visitamos en nuestra última mañana en esta ciudad. En concreto, estuvimos en la tienda de Rijnstraat 50-52.
Es como una especie de supermercado dividido en secciones: droguería, alimentación... que curiosamente son independientes unas de otras, aunque estén dentro del mismo recinto.
Me hubiera gustado hacer fotos, pero la climatología aquel día no acompañaba y no me molesté en sacar mi pequeña cámara y por desgracia la de mi hermana, cual ley de Murphy, estuvo varios días atrapada dentro de la mochila -se le desprogramó el candado-.

The truth is we actually stumbled upon one of the stores they have in Amsterdam *see here*, which happened to be right opposite one of the Kruidvats we went to on our last morning there. To be more precise, we went to the store located in Rijnstraat 50-52. It's like some sort of supermarket divided in different sections: drugstore, foodstore... that are independent from one another, though they are within the same facilities. I wish I'd taken some photos, but the weather was just dreadful that day and didn't even take the trouble to take my handy camera and unfortunately my sister's - as if under the influence of one of Murphy's Laws - was trapped inside her camera bag for a few days -her padlock combination changed itself with no input from her-.

En Dirx Drogist encontramos algunas marcas habituales en cualquier droguería tipo L'Oreal y otras que hay habíamos visto en otros sitios, como Miss Sporty -de la que os hablé *aquí*. También en la gama de bajo coste, encontramos la marca Paris Memories, de la que Marian se trajo un esmalte de recuerdo. Apenas he visto información sobre la marca: por lo que he leído creo que se trata de una marca de los países árabes. De precio, todo muy baratito, aunque la presentación de los productos quizá era algo anticuada -no tan alegre y colorida como Essence con sus Cosmas-.

At Dirx Drogist we can find common drugstore brands like L'Oreal as well as others we'd seen there already like Miss Sporty -that I mentioned *here*-. Also in the low-cost range they offer the brand Paris Memories, from which Marian got herself a 'memory' in the shape of a nailpolish. There's almost no information about the brand online: from what I can gather, I think it comes from the Middle East. Pricewise, it was dirt cheap though the packaging of the products feels somewhat dated -and not as lively and colourful as Essence with its Cosma girls.

Pero la marca que nos hizo babear y ejercer algo de autocontrol fue Teeez. Tenían un stand de esos giratorios. Aunque no tiene una variedad apabullante de colorido, lo cierto es que la presentación y la pigmentación de los productos era excelente. Lamentablemente, no conservo el ticket, pero creo recordar que los esmaltes costaban 4.50 € y la mayoría de productos no llegaban a los 7 €. Compramos dos de los esmaltes holográficos -creo que había cuatro holográficos en total- y Marian compró un brillo de labios que aunque aún no ha estrenado, tiene una pigmentación comparable a los Megashine de NYX, o sea, de sobresaliente.

But the brand that really had us on the verge of drooling and forced us to exercise some self-control was Teeez. They had one of those revolving displays and although the colour range is not as impressive and large as others, the packaging and colour payoff was top-of-the-range. Unfortunately I seem to have lost the receipt but seem to recall the polishes were 4.50€ each and the rest of the products did not exceed the 7 € bar. We got two of their holographic polishes (I think there were 4 holos) and Marian also bought a lipgloss she hasn't got round to use yet but the tester's colour payoff was comparable to what you get with NYX Megashine lipglosses, i.e. outstanding.

Hacía mucho, mucho tiempo que no hacía ninguna entrada de esta serie, pero creo que la ocasión lo merece.

No, no es que haya vuelto a comprar un esmalte parecido a otro que ya tuviera. Este que os voy a enseñar es parte del intercambio con Sarahlouise, del que os hablamos aquí.

It has been a long, long time since I wrote my last post of this series, but I think the chance is worth it.

No, I haven't bought another polish similar to some other I already had. This polish I'm showing you now is part of the swap with Sarahlouise, which we told you about here.

Pues bien, el esmalte en cuestión es este de Marks&Spencer, en el tono “Rainbow”, que he “chuacheado” en el número 4 de la rueda. Es un esmalte gris holográfico, que se parece bastante al de Essence, “Can't cheat on me” (también en esta rueda, en el número 1), que os enseñé también no hace mucho. *Link*

OK, the aforementioned polish is this one from Marks&Spencer, in the shade 'Rainbow', which I've swatched on the fourth place of this nailwheel. It's a grey holo polish, quite similar to Essence's 'Can't cheat on me' (also on this nailwheel, on no. 1), which I showed you a few days ago.

Bueno, no son clones exactos, ni mucho menos. Ambos son holográficos, pero el de Essence tiene un efecto mucho más sutil, aunque aplicando dos capas se aprecia sin dificultad este acabado.

Well, they're not exact dupes, needless to say. Both of them are holographic, but the Essence one has a more subtle effect, although this finish can be easily seen by applying two coats.

Y a vosotras, ¿os gustan los esmaltes holográficos?
