Guía de Viaje Berlín (Parte 1) - Berlin Travel Guide (Part 1)

Berlín es la capital de Alemania y también es la ciudad más poblada de este país, con aproximadamente 4,5 millones de habitantes. Si pensamos en Berlín es inevitable pensar también en el Muro, que dividió a la ciudad y al país durante décadas.

Berlin is Germany's capital city and the most populated one in the country, with about 4.5 million people. When one thinks of Berlin, the Berlin Wall dividing both city and country for decades is brought to mind.

Cómo llegar (avión) / How to get in (by plane):
Berlín dispone de dos pequeños aeropuertos, Tegel (TXL) y Schönefeld (SXF). Hasta hace un par de años existía un tercer aeropuerto, Tempelhof. Sin embargo, se está construyendo un nuevo y gran aeropuerto, el Aeropuerto Internacional de Berlín??, que se preveé comience a operar en el 2012.

The city of Berlin has two small airports, Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF). There used to be a third one, Tempelhof, until a few years ago. However, a new and bigger airport is being built, Berlin International Airport ?? that is expected to start operating sometime in 2012.

Cómo moverse por Berlín / How to get around in Berlin
Si váis a pasar varios días en Berlín como fue nuestro caso, os recomiendo encarecidamente haceros con la Berlín Welcome Card. Podéis adquirirla en algunos hoteles, aunque sólo algunas modalidades de todas las disponibles. y en cualquier estación de la red de metro (U-Bahn) y cercanías (S-Bahn). Una vez adquirida, tenéis que validarla en las máquinas dispuestas a tal efecto en cualquier estación y a partir de ese momento, se empieza a 'descontar' su tiempo de validez.

If you are going to spend a few days in Berlin as was our case, then I strongly suggest you get the Berlin Welcome Card. You can get it in some hotels, though they may not have all the different types of cards available, and on any station from both the underground (U-Bahn) and the suburban train (S-Bahn). Once you get it, you must validate it on any of the machines used for this purpose and from that moment your card will begin to expire.

Nosotras adquirimos la Welcome Card Berlín para 72 horas para las zonas AB+ MuseumInsel en la estación más cercana a nuestro hotel, Turmstrasse, ya que nuestro hotel no ofrecía el paquete Museo, sólo la parte de transporte. El precio: 34 €/cada una.
Al comprarla, nos evitamos pagar nada en dos de los museos que visitamos, el museo de Pérgamo y el Neues Museum (la entrada del Neues costaba 5 €, del Pérgamon no me fijé).

We got our Welcome Card Berlin for 72 hours and the areas AB + MuseumInsel at the tube station closest to our hotel, Turmstrasse, as our hotel did not offer the Museum variety of the card, just the transport. Price: € 34/each. By doing so, we didn't have to pay anything on two of the museums we visited, The Pergamon and the Neues Museum (price for the Neues was €5; I don't know how much the Pergamon was).

Berlín dispone de una excelente red de transporte metropolitano y de cercanías, como cualquier otra gran ciudad del país. Todas las estaciones cuentan con un panel electrónico que indica el tiempo que falta hasta el siguiente tren/metro. En nuestro hotel nos dieron un plano de la ciudad muy manejable, el complemento perfecto para moveros por Berlín sin ningún problema, salvo que tengáis un sentido de la orientación inexistente como es mi caso -¡qué sería de mí sin mi hermana! Un detalle útil son las numerosas señales en toda la ciudad, de color azul, que indican la situación de los monumentos y lugares destacados más cercanos y la distancia a la que se encuentran.

Berlin has an excellent underground and suburban train service, as any other big city in the country. All the stations have electronic signs telling the time until the next train. We got a nice map at the hotel, an excellent tool to help you move around Berlin with no problem unless your sense of direction is nonexistent as happens to be my case -what would become of me were it not for my sister, I wonder!. A helpful detail were the many street signs in blue indicating the closest sights and the distance to get there.

De los muchos museos de Berlín, estos fueron los que visitamos:

* Museo de Pérgamo: Se encuentra dentro de la llamada 'Isla de los Museos'. La parada de metro más próxima es Friedrichstrasse, aunque hay que andar un poquito hasta llegar allí. La recomendación general para Berlín suele ser: "Si sólo tienes tiempo para ver un museo en Berlín, que sea éste". Se podría decir que son, al menos, tres museos en uno: la colección de antigüedades, el museo del Próximo Oriente y el Museo de Arte Islámico. La entrada, gratis con la BWC, incluye audioguía. Se puede visitar de 10 a 18h de viernes a miércoles y hasta las 22h los jueves.
Nada más entrar, nos recibe una impresionante reconstrucción del altar de Pérgamo y en el Museo del Próximo Oriente nos abre las puertas la reconstrucción de la Puerta de Ishtar de Babilonia. Preparaos para dejar vuestras cámaras de fotos echando humo, porque en este museo está permitido hacer fotos (eso sí, sin flash).



Of the many museums on offer in Berlin, these were the ones we visited:
*Pergamon Museum: Situated on the so-called Museum Island. The closest tube station is Friedrichstrasse, though you have to walk a bit to reach it. The general recommendation for Berlin goes something like this - 'If you only have time to visit one museum in Berlin, make it this one'. You could say it's three museums in one: the Antiquity Collection, the Middle East Museum and the Museum of Islamic Art. The entrance ticket, free with your BWC includes an audioguide. Visiting times: 10-18 Fr-We and until 22 on Thursdays.
Right after the entrance, we are greeted by a breathtaking reconstruction of the Pergamon Altar, while the Middle East Museum opens the doors of its reconstruction of the Babylonian Ishtar Gate. Beware: Your cameras will be smoking hot, because you're allowed to take photos inside (no flash, though).


*Neues Museum: Este museo quedó prácticamente destruido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su reconstrucción finalizó en el año 2009. Entre otras muchas cosas, alberga el famoso busto de la reina egipcia Nefertiti. Está permitido hacer fotos sin flash -salvo en la sala que alberga dicha pieza-. La audioguía está también incluída en el precio (gratis con la BWC). Al igual que el Pérgamo, se puede visitar de 10 a 18h de viernes a miércoles y hasta las 22h los jueves.

*Neues Museum (New Museum): It was almost completely destroyed during WWII. Its reconstruction ended in 2009. Among others, it houses the worldwide famous bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Photos are allowed without a flashlight -except in the room where the said piece is kept- The audioguide is also included on the price (free for BWC holders). Like the Pergamon, visiting times are from 10 to 18 Fr-We and until 22 on Thursdays.

*Museo Judío: El último museo que visitamos, ya fuera de la 'Isla de los Museos'. La estación de metro más cercana es Hallesches Tor. Se encuentra en un edificio de diseño moderno en el que resulta un poco lioso moverse. Me gustó y decepcionó un poco a la vez. Se puede visitar de 10 a 20h de martes a domingos y hasta las 22 los lunes.

*Jewish Museum. It was the last one we visited, and is located out of the Museum Island. The closest underground station is Hallesches Tor. The building is one of those modern ones where finding your way can be a little bit of a nightmare. I have mixed feelings towards this one: liked it but felt disappointed at the same time. Visiting times are from 10 to 20 Tuesday to Sunday and until 22 on Mondays.

También visitamos el Palacio de Charlottenburg (Schloss Charlottenburg), eso sí, sólo el edificio principal o Altes Schloss. También está permitido sacar fotografías, previo pago de un permiso de 3€. La parada de metro que está más cerca es la de Richard-Wagner Platz. La entrada cuesta 12€ y también incluye audioguía. El horario de visita es de 10 a 17 h de martes a domingo.



We also visited the Charlottenburg Palace (Schloss Charlottenburg), though only the main building or Altes Schloss. Photos are allowed inside, but only if you buy a permit for €3. The closest underground station is Richard-Wagner Platz. The ticket price was €12 and again includes an audioguide. Visiting times: 10-17, Tuesday to Sunday.

Otros/Others

*Fernsehturm/Torre de Televisión: Puesto que la cúpula del Reichstag se encuentra cerrada por motivos de seguridad, este es el lugar al que todo el mundo acude para divisar Berlín desde las alturas. La parada de metro más próxima es AlexanderPlatz. Una enorme cola para sacar la entrada, otra para subir a la torre, un pequeño pasillo redondo para contemplar Berlín a tu derecha entre cristales y el bar a tu izquierda, al 'módico' precio de 8,20 € (precio reducido con la BWC). ¿Repetiría? Si no lo supiera, supongo que pagaría la novatada. Se puede visitar de 9 a 24 desde marzo hasta octubre y desde las 10 entre los meses de noviembre a febrero.



*Fernsehturm/Television Tower: As the Reichstag's Dome happens to be closed on security grounds, this is the place where everybody heads to when they want to see Berlin from above the ground. Nearest tube station is AlexanderPlatz. A nice long queue awaits you to get your ticket, another one to go up and then you step on a narrow round corridor to see Berlin through the windows on your right and a glimpse of the bar on your left, all for the 'reasonable' price of € 8.20 € (reduced price for BWC holders). Would I repeat the experience? Not knowing about it, I guess I would be taken for a ride. It can be visited from 9 to 24 between March and October and from 10 am between November and February.
